- SAREX Mission STS-58 Launch Update
-
- The Space Shuttle Columbia is scheduled to launch Thursday, October
- 14 at 1453 UTC. This flight carries the Shuttle Amateur Radio
- EXperiment (SAREX) payload, configuration C, which includes FM voice
- and packet.
-
- Three of the seven crewmembers are Amateur Radio licensees. Richard
- Searfoss, Pilot, KC5CKM Bill McArthur, Mission Specialist 2, KC5ACR
- Martin Fettman, Payload Specialist, KC5AXA
-
- All SAREX operation is split frequency. The Shuttle downlink
- frequency for voice and packet is 145.55 MHz. This is a
- receive-only frequency. Voice transmit frequencies for all areas
- except Europe are 144.91, 144.93, 144.95, 144.97 and 144.99 MHz.
- Europeans should transmit voice on 144.70, 144.75 and 144.80 MHz.
- The worldwide packet transmit frequency is 144.49 MHz. The packet
- call sign is W5RRR-1.
-
- News and astronaut retransmissions are carried on the following
- Amateur Radio stations: Goddard Amateur Radio Club (Greenbelt, MD)
- WA3NAN, 3.86, 7.185, 14.295, 21.395, and 28.65 MHz and on VHF at
- 147.45 MHz. Johnson Space Center Amateur Radio Club (Houston, TX)
- W5RRR, 3.850, 7.227, 14.280, 21.350, and 28.400 MHz and VHF at
- 146.64 MHz.
-
- The extremely busy work schedules of the astronauts may sometimes
- reduce your chance for an unscheduled, random contact with the
- Shuttle. The SAREX Working Group will try to schedule as many
- contact opportunities as the astronauts' time will permit. Please
- keep posted to W1AW bulletins throughout the mission.
