- SB SPACE @ ARL $ARLS042 ARLS042 SAREX STS 57 update
- ZCZC AS22 QST de W1AW Space Bulletin 042 ARLS042 From
- ARRL Headquarters Newington, CT June 24, 1993
- To all radio amateurs
-
- ADDITIONAL SAREX PACKET OPERATIONS PLANNED
-
- The astronaut crew of STS-57 passed a mission milestone
- today when they intercepted and retrieved the EURECA
- satellite. The Shuttle's mechanical arm was used to
- capture the satellite and tuck it into the cargo bay for
- the trip home.
-
- The SAREX Working Group has asked the crew to activate the
- packet radio equipment prior to going to sleep on June 24
- at 2107 UTC. The 28.5 degree inclination of the orbit
- will permit 2-way communications between the Shuttle and
- amateur stations below 42 degrees latitude.
-
- The SAREX downlink frequency for packet is 145.55 MHz.
- Please do not transmit on the downlink frequency. The
- packet uplink frequency is 144.49 MHz. As always,
- amateurs should operate considerately. SAREX packet
- operators should not operate their equipment in packet-
- attack mode. Packetcluster users are reminded that
- Shuttle passes are short and occur only a few times each
- day of the mission. All hams are asked to be tolerant,
- keeping in mind the educational aspects that are taking
- place during the flight with schools.
-
- A number of maneuvers and orbital burns made during the
- satellite rendezvous have made earlier Keplerian element
- sets obsolete. Please monitor W1AW, WA3NAN, internet, and
- your local PBBS for the latest element sets and further
- SAREX news updates.
