- We have developed three TNC-boards for different microcomputer
- systems, our software ist totally written in a high level language
- (Turbo PASCAL).
-
- Are there any standards for mail protocols between the communicating
- packet radio stations ? Who can help and send the missing information
- to Germany ? We are ready to write our mail forwarding software
- packages for the IBM-PC and CP/M computers.

- Unfortunately, ham -> ham communication is third party
- traffic if it gets relayed. Such as through your local vhf pbbs.
- I suppose your only legal method right now is to work the station

- Clearly, for the FCC to interpret "third party" to include
- all ham-ham communications that merely happen to pass through
- a relay station would be absurd. Last I heard, the issue was
- "under discussion". Let's hope it goes our way.
-
- I agree, for such a view would seem to make communication between US
- amateurs and european amateurs via amateur satellites transponders
- illegal.
-
- Communication between US amateurs and european amateurs via amateur
- satellites transponders is a common occurance. Why would communication
- via a repeater or a digipeater be considered to be any different?
-
- If communications via repeaters or digipeater between hams in countries
- that do not have third party agreements were considered illegal, then
- wouldn't communication via amateur satellites transponders be considered
- illegal too?

- Greg,
-
- The Amateur Satellite Service has been considered distinct from the Amateur
- Service for some FCC purposes, like frequency coordination for the transponder
- downlinks. At one time it was legal to use ASCII via a transponder, but not
- direct! In such a climate you could hardly expect the rules to be rational
- with respect to Earth and space digipeaters. I find it useful to imagine
- how the world appears to a Commissioner and uphold the Principle of Least
- Astonishment.

-
- This message announces the release to SIMTEL20 of two new versions of
- the W0RLI MailBox/GateWay packet radio software.
-
- The first release is version 11.9 of the Xerox-820 based system which
- has been evolving over the last few years.
-
- The second release is version 1.5 of a re-implementation of that
- system in the C language, for IBM-PC class machines and others.
-
- Hank (W0RLI) has now washed his hands of the Xerox-820 version of the
- system and has given me permission to release my recent version of it
- as Version 11.9. He is now spending his efforts on the C version
- (having acquired an AT-clone). It is not clear whether any more
- releases will be made of the 820 version.
-
- Both versions are available at SIMTEL20, in the following files:
-
- 820 version:
- Filename Type Bytes CRC
-
- Directory PD:<CPM.PACKET>
- RLI119.ARK.1 BINARY 219610 11F3H
-
- C version:
- Directory PD:<MSDOS.PACKET>
- BUG.RPT.1 ASCII 1597 FA00H
- CIO13.ARC.1 BINARY 42752 E552H
- RUN15.ARC.1 BINARY 61824 7DE9H
- SRC15.ARC.1 BINARY 69888 7D19H
-
- Distribution of both versions will also continue to be available from
- Wes, K7PYK, in return for blank formatted disks in reusable self-
- addressed mailers with return postage. I will also make copies (for
- the 820 version ONLY) under the same conditions (K1BC at my callbook
- address).
-
- The 820 version requires one 8" SSSD disk for the regular distribution,
- and another disk for the source files if you want them. I can also
- provide the 820 version on a 5.25" IBM-PC disk, for distribution,
- but of course it doesn't execute from those disks.
-
- The C version is being posted to CompuServe as new releases become
- available. I'm not a CompuServe subscriber. Perhaps someone could
- volunteer to act as gateway from CompuServe to SIMTEL20 for those
- releases?
-
- Following are excerpts from the documentation files for the two
- releases:
-
- From the 820 version CHANGES.TNC file:
-
-
- Changes and additions since version 11.8 are:
-
- Changes from K1BC:
- Add counter of What? and Can't do it errors. If get a lot of them
- in one connect, force a timeout. Recovers from at least some cases of
- missing a *** Disconnected.
- Add NE command. Lets user toggle his own "Expert" bit.
- Add NH command. Lets user tell us his Home BBS. (Sysop still
- has to extract it from USER.DAT and use it in FWD.TNC.)
- Add GZ command. Does GU and at same time clears "last read msg number"
- for each user. Use when you do a GR, so user doesn't miss new msgs the
- first time he logs in after GR.
- Change to login: Used to be when a remote sysop connected, he didn't
- get the "you have new mail" msg. Now he does, but only if he isn't also
- a BBS (don't want it when connect for forwarding).
- Ask user for his home BBS when he connects, if we don't know it. Text
- is configurable, can be null if you don't want this.
- Notice when someone reads somebody else's mail, i.e., mail to a real
- callsign other than his own (except B and T type mail are OK to
- read). Send a msg when he does this. Message can be impolite, polite
- or omitted. If you have a user who you want to prevent from doing this,
- mark him disabled on either port A or port B (whichever he doesn't use)
- and he will be prevented from reading other people's mail.
- Enforce length check on "TO" calls. If it's over 6, it can't be
- right, so do a "What?" error. Catches "S W1BC@K1BC" where he should
- have said "S W1BC @ K1BC".
- If someone does an "S" command while he is connected by a link from
- another BBS, send a message to him after accepting the msg. This
- msg can be omitted, but is intended to be a reminder that he is tying
- up two BBSes by doing that and he should just send it locally and
- let it be forwarded.
- Remove the following glitch: Used to be, if you did KT instead of K,
- a service msg was generated even if the msg being killed was not
- a "T" type message. Led to confusion. Now don't make S msg unless
- killed msg was a T msg.
- If a user is excluded on both A and B ports, don't let him in via
- linking from another BBS, either.
- Add config parameter to restrict "*** LINKED to" connects to BBS only.
- Add time-of-day dependent parameters: BBS only on A,B and L, GateWay on.
- Add "Busy" vs "Quiet" hours definition in config file.
-
- Changes and additions since version 11.7 are:
-
- Fix bug that caused rejection of connects through digis with 2 by 1 calls.
-
-
- From the C version readme file:

- The answer is YES. I am now the official integrator and central distribution
- point for the package, and have both binary and full source archives available
- online.
-
- By far the easiest way to get it for all involved is to download it from my
- BBS, which is Fidonet node 128/19, running Opus software. The phone number
- is 303/593-0766, 2400 baud max, up almost 24 hrs/day. First time users get
- sufficient resources to download the code with no problems.
-
- The sources are also on my Unix box, but there is no anonymous access there
- right now. Sufficient demand might change that situation.
-
- I have been making small numbers of floppy copies, but Brian WB6RQN is
- definitely the man to see about floppies. I don't have an address for him
- handy though... via uucp he is ...bellcore!wb6rqn!brian. Other secondary
- distribution points include Bob N3CVL in Pittsburgh, Doug KD4NC in Georgia,
- and Wally WA6JPR (I think) in CA. If you know one of these folks, they get
- direct uucp updates as they are released.
-
- The code on louie.udel.edu is rarely up-to-date. Ditto for the code on
- sdcsvax. I am working to create better mechanisms for getting the code out
- to Arpa folk, but for now I wouldn't get it that way.
-
- Note that there is now a real version numbering scheme in use, and the current
- code is v870119.0. If the stuff you have doesn't come up with a banner that
- includes that version number, you're running buggy code. (Sorry :-)
-
- Feel free to holler if this creates more questions than it answers.

- Although the satellites seem to be exempt from this kind of consideration
- what about 2 meter repeaters with links to 10 meter repeaters? I personally
- have used such a link to talk to people in Great Britain and they probably
- didn't even realize that I wasn't on 10. When you consider that other users
- of the repeater were tech's it seems even more like third party but it also
- seems to have been exempted as long as both ends were hams.
-
- Sure be glad when they finally resolve all this.

- You guessed it, we were rooting for Denver...just because if they
- won we could say that the Chargers beat Denver so.... but guess
- the logic gets lost on the Giants noise. I was telling Mary that
- this contest was really the Jews against the Christians...but she
- did't think that was nice.
-
- You should see our weather. Yesterday I worked on the
- car...seems that every pice of rubber has turned to stone in the
- Z car. Now there is blood all over the engine. I did that
- before the game and licked the wounds (both) during the game. It
- was about 80 yesterday, today too. We had the house open until
- about 5PM. IT hasn't been that warm for weeks. And today I hear
- that all DC airports are closed. That is no loss. Everybody go
- home and haver a beer.
-
- Ya, Dan called me and I suggested that he call you directly.
- Seems that there is different ways to do it depending on your
- status....Dan is very compitent CPA and will do a good job for
- you, free too! If this screws anything up..let me know. I mean
- if you don't hear from him when you feel you should...Dan told me
- that this could mean as much as $4000 difference in the tax
- due..if we do it right.

- Enjoy the snow... 73
