-
- Q: Which is the best country to play with - I find the game too hard?
- A: It all depends on what type of society you are trying to build.
-
- Aggressive and dominating over the Amerindian population is best
- achieved with the Spanish. Conquer the Indian nations and return the
- gold to Europe as quickly as possible.
-
- Trade with Europe, the Amerindian and the other European powers are
- the forte of the Dutch. Build up the best trading routes and ensure that
- the colonies are productive and self-sufficient.
-
- Immigration to the colonies from Europe is best achieved with the
- English. Keep a close eye on the status of those waiting in Europe for
- transportation.
-
- Friendly contact with the Amerindian is the benefit of the French. Trade
- and exploration is best achieved with the French and make friends with
- all the native peoples.
-
- Q: What do you use Missionaries for?
- A: Establishing Missions! Transport these from Europe and move them
- into the nearest villages. With prolonged friendly contact with the
- Indian nation, 'Converts' will come to live in your colony.
-
- Q:What is the best thing to build first?
- A: A tricky one. Docks are important for allowing the collection of fish
- as a food source. However the building of a stockade around the colony
- will help fight off Indian uprisings against you.
-
- Q: How does one build things?
- A: To build one must have lumber so one colonist must be a lumberjack.
- Once the maximum wood load has been collected (normally 100units)
- then this colonist (or another) must be given the job of a carpenter.
- The bottom left icon of a hammer will take you to a screen giving
- current construction status. Click on change to alter that being built.
-
- Q: To what extent do my actions with a neighbouring Amerindian village
- reflect other native towns of the same ethnic group?
-
- A: Attacking a nearby Amerindian town causes the people of that town
- to grow angry, however other towns with the same ethnic group will
- not be affected.
-
- Q: How do you save a game?
- A: You will be prompted on screen at 1700 that the turn rules will now
- change.
-
- Q: How does one solve the freezing problems?
- A: Use Crucial Help Menu to adjust Memory Settings.
-
- Q: When loading a save game the tax rate applied to the Crown reverts
- back to 0%.
- A: No fix available.
-
- Q: How do I wipe the Hall of Fame?
- A: Either reinstall to get blank slots or carry on playing and they will
- overwrite.
-
- Q: How do I get gold onto the Galleon?
- A: Click on gold, on the bank of the colony the letter 'S' appears, the
- gold is ready to go onto ship. When you sail the Galleon out of the port
- the gold will be onboard. This is the same method as moving colonists
- from Europe.
-
- Q: I have an AWE32 soundcard but when I select SoundBlaster the
- game runs but the sound could be better, so I tried to select General
- MIDI to get better sound quality but the computer either automatically
- reboots or hangs.
- A: Use Crucial Help Menu to adjust Memory Settings.
-
- Q: I need tools but I can't find them?
- A: Tools can be bought in Europe and brought over by ship or by mining
- ore and turning this into tools via the Blacksmith's shop.
-
- Q: I have run out of space in my colony, what now?
- A: One can only use a 3x3 square around the colony as land. To
- effectively use this one must only place specialists and experts in the
- tasks such as farming/fishing/mining to maximise the use of land.
-
- Q: How do I get specialists?
- A: Specialists can be brought over from Europe or by taking ordinary
- colonists into a friendly Amerindian village where he will learn a skill
- from them. Also when you can build an education establishment
- (school, then college, then University). Place an expert in this school to
- teach his profession to another colonist.
-
- Q: I can't move my ship or other units, why?
- A: Use the numeric keypad with the Numlock key turned off.
-
- Q: I read that there was a network option, where?
- A: There is no network option in Colonization.
-
- Q: How does one make money quickly?
- A: There is no quick way to make money you must trade to earn it. By
- producing goods in colonies to sell in Europe or to the native
- populations, or by bringing goods from Europe and selling them to the
- natives.
-
- Q: How does one beat the European armies after declaring
- independence?
- A: Make sure that the colonies are well defended with
- fortresses/forts/stockades and have an ample supply of muskets,
- cannons and troops, who are able to defend these towns.
-
- Q: How do you close down a colony?
- A: You can only do this with a colony that does not have a stockade.
- Need to remove all colonists - assign them tasks i.e. as farmers etc.
- You will eventually get down to one man, then it will as if you want to
- remove colony - answer 'yes'.
-
- Q: I can't install the program to my hard drive. I type INSTALL and
- nothing happens.
- A: Use Crucial Help Menu to adjust Memory Settings.
-
- Q: I am running out of wood.
- A: Turn man into Lumberjack by putting on grass.
-
- Q: What determines how big a town can be? Some of my towns are 14,
- while others won't go higher than 9 without having a production loss?
- A: A town can be as big as you can create it and keep food on the
- table! To be self-sufficient this is limited to the amount of food the
- surrounding terrain can generate and your ability to maximise this. You
- can always ship food into a town to keep the town's people from
- starving and have an elevated population.
-
- Also, depending on difficulty level there is a limit to how many Tory
- citizens you can have in any one town before you suffer the production
- loss. I believe the limit is 8 at medium level, 7 at next level. The town
- can continue to grow but you have to get the revolutionary spirit of
- the
- citizens up by generating Liberty Bells. All of this is traceable in the box
- in lower left corner of the city screen, where it shows # or % or
- revolutionaries or Tories.
-
- Q: I don't know how to tell the computer which of my colonists should
- learn the profession. It just picks one randomly from my colonists. Is
- that intended?
- A: Yes, part of gameplay. If it wasn't the one you wanted just reassign
- the newly skilled person and some other free colonist. The only thing
- needed to be careful of colonists or criminals to servants rather than a
- person with the skill you are trying to spread.
-
- Q: Can you access Custom Houses?
- A: No, once it's built, it automatically runs independently - top menu
- bar changes according to type of goods being shipped through customs
- house back to Europe.
-
- Q: How do I get gold/treasure?
- A: Need to send a scout. Look for a burial ground- find hidden treasure.
-
- Q: Towards the end of the game the message appears: 'NUMBER OF
- UNITS AT MAXIMUM'. What is the maximum?
- A: 200.
-
- Q: The game locks up when using a Sound Blaster AWE32.
- A:Check for Correct File , Make sure you are using AWE UTIL TSR
- v1.11.
-
- Q: I can't construct Cathedral Improvement. The manual says it
- requires 8 people in town. I have 8 people in town, what am I doing
- wrong?
- A: Game Requires 16 People Nothing, the game actually requires 16
- people in town for Cathedral Improvements. If you want, you can EDIT
- GAMES.TXT n the Colonization directory. Change line 205 from 16 to 8.
