  5. We are pleased to deliver to you this copy of the OS/2 Warp Beta II,
  6. Version 2.99.  (2.99 will be used as a version number for all OS/2
  7. betas.)  As a participant of this program, you will have the opportunity
  8. to install, test, and provide feedback on this pre-release code.

  20. This second performance beta contains additional features and functions
  21. since our first performance beta which was released in the spring.
  22. Along with our Fast Load option for Windows programs, new "Play at Will"
  23. PCMCIA services, and Presentation Manager full 32 bit windowing
  24. subsystem, we are today supplying major enhancements to OS/2 including:
  25.  
  26. .A redesigned installation that automatically configures your system
  27.  
  28. .Enhanced print performance and clearly noticeable improvements in both
  29.  monochrome and color bitmap printing compared to earlier OS/2 versions
  30.  as a result of new 32 bit printer drivers and a new 32-bit print
  31.  subsystem

  33. .New tutorial that introduces you to OS/2 at a pace you select and can be
  34.  tailored to the type of user you are
  35.  
  36. .Numerous changes in the Workplace Shell for easier navigation.  The
  37.  Workplace Shell features new graphics, including new icons, bitmaps and
  38.  color schemes.  It also introduces the customizable Launch Pad for very
  39.  quick access to your most frequently used objects and programs, and it
  40.  now enables you to save and restore desktop configurations so you can
  41.  always return to your favorite setup.

  43. .The Shell also features a redesigned Find Objects function that has
  44.  increased usability and performance in the search function.

  46. .Support for Windows 32S applications that are currently available.

  92.        receive faxes of unlimited length and print faxes to any OS/2
  93.        printer.

  95.      --IBM Installation Utility and System Information Tool:  This system
  96.        information tool allows you to quickly and conveniently access
  97.        detailed information on the hardware and software configuration of
  98.        your system.

  101. Expectations
  102.  
  103. While we have been incorporating your feedback from the first beta, our
  104. goal remains to provide a more responsive OS/2 that is simpler to
  105. install and more intuitive to use.  We'd also like to provide you with a
  106. set of applications that function well with OS/2 and that you consider
  107. to be a true "bonus" package.
  108.  
  109. We are interested in all your feedback and particularly in these areas:
  110.  
  111. .We've made changes to our diskette packing technique in order to supply
  112.  OS/2 to you in fewer diskettes than in the past.  We're looking for your
  113.  feedback on this and in how the installation went in general.
  114.  
  115. .We also want to know if this beta satisfies your needs in constrained
  116.  environments--for example, running your favorite Windows or OS/2
  117.  productivity application, personal finance application, personal
  118.  organizer, spread sheet, game and so on in a four megabyte machine.
  119.  
  120. .We are interested in your views on the new Workplace Shell changes.
  121.  
  122. .We are interested in your feedback on the quality and performance of the
  123.  Windows 32S support.
  124.  
  125. .We want you to install and use all of the applications in the BonusPak. Tell us how you like them.

  128. Installation
  129.  
  130. Before installing, please note the following:
  131. .If you have the OS/2 Performance Beta (the previous version), you must
  132.  format the partition before installing this beta.
  133.  
  134. .This beta will only install over OS/2 1.3, OS/2 for Windows 2.1, OS/2
  135.  for Windows 2.1 plus the ServicePak, DOS 3.1 or greater with Windows 3.1
  136.  or 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups 3.10 or 3.11, over itself, or in a
  137.  totally empty partition.  (Windows networking functions are not
  138.  supported under WINOS2.)
  139.  
  140. .In order to run Windows applications within the OS/2 environment,
  141.  Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups 3.10 or 3.11 should
  142.  already be installed on your system.
  143.  
  144. .Please read and agree to the license agreement on the back of the CD-ROM
  145.  or within the diskette package before using this beta.
  146.  
  147. .The packaging for this beta does not represent the final packaging for
  148.  any of the products.
  149.  
  150. .It is always a good idea to run beta code in a non-production or
  151.  non-mission critical environment.

  153. .It is recommended that you backup your OS/2 partition prior to
  154.  installation.

  162. This beta is scheduled to end about 4 to 5 weeks after it was announced
  163. on the major electronic bulletin boards.  The exact end date will be
  164. provided on the electronic bulletin boards described below.  Please
  165. provide us with your feedback as soon as possible.

  168. technical support for this Beta program through the PSPBETA FORUM on
  169. CompuServe**, through the "Beta Feedback" topic of the OS/2 Club
  170. bulletin board on PRODIGY ***, and through the IBM electronic bulletin
  171. board system OS2BBS in a forum called OS2BETA.
