  33.      Every now-and-then there are enquiries on the net regarding
  34. E-mail to a distant country. The question is often of the type
  35. "has that country got E-mail access ?". The following table is a
  36. guide of country codes, showing the countries which have access to
  37. Internet or general E-mail services. The country codes have been
  38. derived from the International Organization for Standardization 
  39. standard ISO 3166.  A country code is taken as a top level domain
  40. once it is registered at rs.internic.net so *not* all country codes
  41. listed are top level domains. At the bottom of the table, there is
  42. also a section of general top level domains, based on the information
  43. available at rs.internic.net.
  44.  
  45. NOTES:
  46.  
  47. 1. Description of codes:
  48.  
  49. - FI stands for FULL INTERNET access. This includes 'telnet', 'ftp',
  50.   and internet E-mail.
  51. - B stands for BITNET access although the address may be in internet
  52.   DNS (Domain Name System) format. 
  53. - * (Asterisk) means that the country is reachable by E-mail. If this is
  54.   not preceded by FI or B, it means that the connection may be a UUCP
  55.   connection. An asterisk is included after FI or B for consistency.
  56. - PFI stands for a provisional full internet connection.(+) 
  57. - P stands for provisional connection. (+)
  58.    (+) This is used when one or more of the following is true:
  59.        - address not verified or lack of address
  60.        - UUCP dialup not active
  61.        - net connection possible but not officially announced
  62.        - premature official announcement of connection
  63.  
  64. 2. Networks which are not included:
  65.  
  66. Networks such as MILNET (U.S. Army) have computers all around the
  67. world. It is generally possible to assume that wherever there is
  68. a U.S. military base, there will be a node reachable through gateways.
  69.  
  70. Private company networks such as for DEC (Digital Equipment Corp.),
  71. or Sun Microsystems, for example, have nodes in many exotic locations.
  72. However the connection may take place via UUCP and cost a lot of money.
  73. Those networks have therefore not been included. In addition, those
  74. are PRIVATE networks.
  75.  
  76. Many companies ( like U.S. Sprint, for example ) offer commercial 
  77. services to many countries which are not readily available on 
  78. the Internet. The service is VERY COSTLY, usually takes place via
  79. UUCP or X.400 connections. X.400 E-mail is usually charged to
  80. someone and if the telecommunication carrier cannot find someone
  81. to pay for the message transfer, it will reject it. As a result,
  82. those types of network have not been included in the list.
  83. Although a user may RECEIVE E-mail from a user on those networks, one 
  84. may not be able to reply to it.
  85.  
  86. FIDONET nodes are NOT included. While all nodes agree to forward 
  87. E-mail as a condition to be included in the tables, the high
  88. cost of phone calls in more exotic locations prompts some
  89. sysadmins not to want their site publicised. Many FIDO nodes
  90. exist throughout the Middle-East and Africa.
  91.  
  92. 3. Updates
  93.  
  94.     The situation changes from day to day. The growth in international
  95. networking is such that the information contained in this document
  96. may be out of date by the time it reaches you.
  97. If you have any update (i.e. knowledge that a new country is connected),
  98. please send a message to <country-codes@ic.ac.uk>, including an example 
  99. address from the country reached so that it can be verified.

  101. 4. .US sites
  102.  
  103.     While there are several hundreds of BITNET nodes in USA, none have
  104. a name in the format `.US'. That's why the .us domain is only FI and *.
  105.  
  106. 5. .edu, .com, etc.
  107.  
  108.     The domains in this section are special in that some of them are
  109. used in more than one country. The domains which have full internet 
  110. access are marked accordingly. However, this doesn't mean that *all*
  111. of  those  domains  have  full  internet  access.   For   example,
  112. only a small proportion of .mil sites have full internet access. The
  113. same is true for .com sites, for example.  
  114.  
  115. 6. UK and GB domains
  116.  
  117.      There are two codes for United Kingdom, namely UK and GB. While 
  118. UK is used for addressing of most domains in DNS format, the field 
  119. GB is used mainly in the X.400 addressing of United Kingdom sites.
  120. However, there is an increasing trend in some United Kingdom sites
  121. being directly connected to Internet under the GB domain. The GB domain
  122. is hence a perfectly suitable Internet top level domain.
  123.  
  124. 7. Main nameservers
  125.  
  126.      This is the main nameserver as listed in the rs.internic.net database.
  127. Those often change as the network grows, and it is hard to keep track of
  128. all nameservers, but they should usually work. Nameservers can be 
  129. queried by users using nslookup.
  130.  
  131. 8. Archiving
  132.  
  133.     Once released, this document is archived in a number of archive
  134. sites around the world. Amongst them:
