  7. ISTAR
  8.  
  9. Istar is a knowledge based system builder that allows you to construct
  10. inference nets, bayesian nets and semantic nets.  It has a particularly
  11. nice user interface, with a smoothness that only Amiga hardware can give.
  12. So it is useful for decision support, to help you clarify complex ideas.
  13.  
  14. You build your knowledge base by drawing boxes and arrows, and then
  15. can run the KB direct.  See Docs/.Intro to get going.

  27. This is a minor update from Version 1.05 (Jan 97), with better key control
  28. and minimize/maximize boxes.  Version 1.05 added two major improvements -
  29. dynamic documents (albeit a limited facility just now) and the ability to
  30. add attributes to any existing item after it has been created.

  34. Next version I hope to put in a Lists facility that will allow
  35. relational algebra operations like union, intersection, and also
  36. make the goal list more flexible.

  38. ISTAR NEWS

  40. As bugs are discovered, as tips are suggested, and as better 
  41. documentation is written, etc., - things that do not involve 
  42. a new version of Istar - they will be put on Aminet as they arrive,
  43. under the name Istarnews.  So Istarnews should appear in the RECENT
  44. list more frequently than versions of Istar.

  56. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  57.  
  58. Known to work on Amiga 1200, 3000, 4000.  Will just about run in
  59. 2Mb machines, but recommend use the IstarPrefs_LowMem as your
  60. preferences file.

  62. Assigns needed (can work without them):
  63.     IstarSys: (has IstarPrefs and, in future, other things)
  64.     KBTools: where KBs are saved etc.
  65. Fonts used (unless specified in IstarPrefs):
  66.     Courier
  67.     Garnet
  68.     Topaz
  69. Libs used:
  70.     iff.library (but can work without it)

  72. It works best if you assign KBTools: to the directory where you keep
  73. your knowledge bases, and IstarSys: to a directory where various system
  74. files are kept.  At present, the only file sought in IstarSys is IstarPrefs.
  75. Otherwise just starts as Sys: root.

  89. because they are not attached to anything yet.  Some of its more
  90. exotic data transofrmations do not yet work.
