- following characteristics:
-
- -Card and Socket Services set versions 2.0 to 2.1 compatibility.
- Card and Socket Services is a software specification defined by the
- PCMCIA organization. Its purpose is to serve as an intermediary
- between the network device driver and the system resources required by
- the PCMCIA Adapter.
-
- -Intended for use with Intel 82365 PCIC or PCIC Compatible, Sharp PHIC,
- Databook TCIC, Cirrus Logic CL-PD6710 or CL-PD6720, or Toshiba ICCNT
- PCMCIA interface chips.

- 3) MICROSOFT NT NOTES
- ==================
-
- The NDIS 3.0 drivers for Microsoft Windows NT currently support only
- PCMCIA machines using the Intel PCIC PCMCIA controller chip or PCIC
- compatible chips. Some of the vendors that do not use the Intel PCIC
- PCMCIA controller are: CompuAdd, Epson, Sharp, Siemens-Nixdorf, and
- Twinhead. Support for other controller chips will be added in
- the future and the driver will be available on the Xircom BBS when it
- is released.
-
-
- 4) OS/2 NOTES
- ===========
-
- The OS/2 configuration utility, CECFG.OS2, was not available at
- the time of this release. Therefore, there is not an OS/2 resource
- manager available to support OS/2 card and socket services and
- support of advanced features of PCMCIA such as HotSwapping.
- It will be available in a future release and available on the BBS.
-
-
- 5) CECFG.EXE CONFIGURATION UTILITY
- ===============================
-
- Supplied on the Network Drivers disk is a utility called CECFG.EXE.
- The utility can be run from the DOS command line or included in the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file or the CONFIG.SYS file. It is recommended that
- CECFG.EXE be run prior to loading any DOS Xircom network driver.
- This utility is intended for DOS usage only.
-
- The CECFG.EXE utility must be informed about which type of network
- driver your network uses: NDIS, ODI, or Packet driver. The CECFG.EXE
- file must be located in the same directory as the network driver.
-
- The CECFG.EXE allows the Xircom CreditCard to become a client of
- Card Services. This is mandatory to support the functions of Card and
- Socket Services. CECFG.EXE must be loaded prior to loading a network
- driver when using Card and Socket Services.
-
-
- 6) SPECIAL SOFTWARE NOTES
- ======================
-
- MEMORY MANAGERS
-
- When using a memory manager be certain to exclude the memory
- range being used by the CreditCard adapter. An 8k range will
- need to be excluded within C000 to E800.
-
- Example:
- --------
- device=c:\dos\himem.sys
- device=c:\dos\emm386.exe x=D000-D1FF
-
- This example excludes 8k of the D000 segment for use by the
- CreditCard in a default configuration. If the CreditCard is
- configured for a memory address different from the default, be
- certain to exclude that memory address range in use.
-
- -The OS/2 drivers available on the disk are intended to support OS/2
- versions 2.0 and above. These drivers do not support Microsoft OS/2
- version 1.3.
-
- -During installation of NetWare Requester version 2.01 for OS/2, when
- prompted for the source drive, which has default A:, insert the
- Network Drivers disk and press return following prompted instructions.
- The CEODI.OS2 driver is located in the root of this diskette as well
- in the ODI subdirectory for an easier installation
-
- -This release of the Netware Server driver "CE.LAN" does not support
- the higher interrupts: 10 - 15. It supports interrupts: 3,4,5, and 7.
-
-
- 7) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES
- ======================
-
- IBM Thinkpads
- -------------
- The default segment at 'D000' may not be available if using expanded
- memory. See the manual for how to change your default address or disable
- expanded memory with "NOEMS" switch on EMM386.
-
- If you are experiencing a problem with the above machine, try using the
- Xircom CreditCard in IO mode. Add the following to the net.cfg or
- protocol.ini to force the network driver to use IO mode data transfers:
-
- Example for net.cfg file used with ceodi.com:
- ---------------------------------------------
- link driver ceodi
- frame ethernet_802.3
- mode IO
-
- Example for protocol.ini used with cendis.exe:
- ----------------------------------------------
- [xircomnet]
- drivername=xircom$
- ioaddress=0X300
- mode=IO
-
- This will disable the default Memory Mapped data transfer mode and
- enable IO data transfers.
-
- HP OmniBooks: 300, 4XX series and Model 530
- Databook: Laptops using Databook PCMCIA controllers: Twinmax CruiserLL,
- Austin 486/66, Siemens Nixdorf, Compuadd 425 TX, Epson Action Note,
- Ultra, and Sharp 8650
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- A utility CESETB2.EXE has been provided in the root of the Xircom Network
- Drivers Disk. This utility allows the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet
- 10Base2 models to detect the proper media type and allow for complete
- functionality with the HP OmniBooks and laptops using the Databook
- controller, some are listed above.
-
- This utility is only necessary for use with the 10Base2. This model
- of the adapter uses coax cable. It should not be used with 10Base-T
- adapters.
-
- To use a 10Base2 adapter, the SETB2.EXE utility must be run after the
- Xircom network driver has been loaded. For example:
-
- Example for Novell ODI workstation driver loading:
- --------------------------------------------------
- lsl.com
- ceodi.com
- ipxodi.com
- cesetb2.exe
- netx.exe
-
- Example for Microsoft NDIS workstation driver loading:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- Add a line to the beginning of your machine's autoexec.bat file
- to execute the file CESETB2.EXE. Be certain this file is executed
- before loading any of the network startup commands. CESETB2.EXE
- cannot be executed from the config.sys.
-
- To use the CESETB2.EXE utility with an IOADDRESS different than the 300
- address default, load CESETB2.EXE with the -i option. Be certain this
- value matches the value in the net.cfg or protocol.ini.
-
- example: cesetb2 -i320
-
- Please note that this utility is not a TSR and must be run each time
- the Xircom network driver is loaded.
-
- The network drivers require a special configuration to support the above
- listed HP OmniBook machines. The drivers must be run in "8-bit mode" and
- with a special keyword called "Flags 83". This requires that the
- 'iowordsize' keyword be set to '8' and the 'flags' keyword be set to '83'
- in either the NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI file, or on the command line for
- the Packet driver. There is no reference to the keyword 'flags' in the
- Xircom User's Guide.
-
- Example for net.cfg file used with ceodi.com:
- ---------------------------------------------
- link driver ceodi
- ioaddress 300
- iowordsize 8
- flags 83
- mode IO
-
- Example for protocol.ini used with cendis.exe:
- ----------------------------------------------
- [xircomnet]
- drivername=xircom$
- ioaddress=0X300
- iowordsize=8
- flags=0X83
- mode=IO
-
- NEC Ultralite VERSA
- -------------------
- If you are using Card and Socket Services on this machine we recommend
- setting the Xircom CreditCard memory address to 'DC000'. See the
- Xircom User's Guide Appendix 'C' for configuration of memory keyword.
-
- Sharp 6781 and Dell 320SLi
- --------------------------
- If you are experiencing problems try the following:
-
- The above laptops may have an early version of Socket Services, built
- into the BIOS, that is not compatible with newer PCMCIA software
- specifications. In this case, either the NET.CFG file must be edited to
- include the keyword string 'socketservices NO', or the PROTOCOL.INI
- file must include the keyword string 'socketservices = NO'. To use the
- Packet driver, load the drivers in the following manner:
-
- cecfg driver=packet socketservices=no
- cepd socketservices=no
-
- ** Sharp 6781 only **
- We recommend using memory segment D000 for the PCMCIA Card on the Sharp
- 6781. This is the default memory assignment.
-
- The Sharp BIOS should also be configured. On page 2-of-4 in the setup,
- underneath the section heading "Floppy Drives & IC Card," configure
- the third entry as follows:
-
- Device 3 (Other): IC Card COM Port: COM3 I/O 3E8H, IRQ 5
-
- Also on page 3-of-4 in the setup have the heading EMS Pageframe: DISABLED
-
- Toshiba T3300SL and GRiD Convertible
- ------------------------------------
- The above laptops must be run in 8-bit mode. This requires that the
- 'iowordsize' keyword be set to '8' in either the NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI
- file, or on the command line for Packet driver.
-
- Example for Packet driver:
- --------------------------
- cecfg driver=packet iowordsize=8
- cepd iowordsize=8
-
- ** Toshiba T3300SL only **
- The resource manager "CECFG.EXE" is not compatible with the T3300SL.
- In order for Xircom software to function properly on this machine do not
- load CECFG.EXE. Load the network drivers in their normal manner.
-
- The BIOS also must be set up to accommodate I/O cards. To set up the
- PCMCIA slot, select the SETUP option in the program TEST3.EXE. Change
- the option on the 'Card Modem' entry to 'Not Used'. This prevents
- BIOS from enabling the PCMCIA slot for a proprietary Toshiba modem card.
-
- Toshiba 1950, 4500, and 4600 series
- -----------------------------------
- The Toshiba laptop may have a version of Card and Socket Services that is
- not compatible with the newer specifications. When using Socket Services
- 1.0, and/or Card Services release 2.0 version 1.0 from Toshiba do the
- following: use the Keyword 'SOCKETSERVICES' and 'CARDSERVICES' set to
- 'NO' to allow the Xircom CreditCard to bypass Card and Socket Services.
- See the Xircom User's Guide 'Appendix C' for configurations of these
- keywords for the various drivers. Alternatively, remove Card and Socket
- Services from config.sys.
-
-

- 9) XIRCOM INSTALLATION PROGRAM NOTES
- =================================
- The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter Installation Program is
- provided to automate configuration of your PC and network drivers.
- This program supports Xircom's new Corporate Series CreditCard
- Ethernet Adapter, as well as the first generation CreditCard Ethernet
- Adapter.
-
- The online Help function contained in the program provides information
- about the selections encountered during the installation process. This
- section provides information about specific environments that may not be
- addressed by the installation program, or items that will be included in
- future releases.
-
- DOS 6.x STARTUP MENU NOTES
- --------------------------
- The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter requires an 8k range of your
- PC's memory. If you are using a memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS,
- EMM386.SYS, or QEMM.SYS, the installation program will attempt to
- exclude this 8k memory range.
-
- If you have multiple startup (boot) selections available, the
- installation program will display a message which will ask you whether
- you would like the program to exclude this memory range in each of
- your startup options, or save the recommended changes in a separate
- file so you can make changes only to the startup option or options
- you wish.
-
- PREVIOUS INSTALLATIONS
- ----------------------
- If you have existing network drivers loaded in your CONFIG.SYS or
- AUTOEXEC.BAT, the installation program will not complete its
- installation. You will need to remove or REM out the existing
- driver entries in your system files and rerun the Xircom installation
- program in order for configuration to be completed correctly.
-
- NETWARE 4.01 INSTALLATION NOTES
- -------------------------------
- The Novell NetWare 4.01 Client Install program does not support
- loading of Xircom's CECFG.EXE file, which is a file required for
- configuration of some PCMCIA slots. If you complete the NetWare 4.01
- installation and experience problems attaching to your network,
- follow these instructions:
-
- Using a DOS editor (such as EDIT), edit your STARTNET.BAT file and
- add the line CECFG before the lines LSL and CEODI.
