- WHEN TO USE THE DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE SUPPLIED WITH THE PPX
- ===============================================================
- Current Xircom Pocket LAN Adapters have PPX support built into
- their DOS drivers, and do not require a separate PPX driver.
- Consult the following chart to determine whether you need to
- load the PPX.COM or PPX.SYS device driver supplied on your PPX
- diskette. Installation instructions for PPX drivers are provided
- in this README file.
-
- Your Pocket LAN Adapter software version is printed on the Pocket
- Adapter software diskette label. Call Xircom Technical Support
- at 1-800-874-4428 if you need to upgrade to a version that has
- built-in PPX support, or download the current driver software
- from Xircom's 24-hour Bulletin Board System (BBS). BBS phone
- numbers are provided at the end of this README file.
-
- NOTE: The PPX is NOT supported in OS/2 environments.

- COMPATIBILITY
- =============
- The PPX is designed to allow the use of a local printer with a
- Xircom Pocket Adapter. It can also be used to access two local
- printers from a single parallel port. Xircom makes no representa-
- tions with respect to other applications that may be able to take
- advantage of PPX technology, and does not support any other uses
- of the PPX. The PPX is supported in DOS environments only.
-
- The PPX requires that the parallel port be addressed through
- the PC's system BIOS. Products that require manual switching or
- reconfiguration of the port, such as some external floppy or hard
- drives, will not work. Products that access the port directly,
- such as print spoolers or file transfer programs, will not
- recognize the presence of the PPX and will not work.
-
-
- INSTALLING THE PPX DEVICE DRIVER
- ================================
- If you are using the PPX with a Pocket Adapter whose software
- does not support the PPX, or with two local printers, you will
- need to load a PPX device driver. You may load the PPX device
- driver each time you turn on your PC by putting the PPX.SYS
- driver in the CONFIG.SYS file. You may also load the driver
- by executing the file PPX.COM at the DOS prompt or in a batch
- (.BAT) file, such as AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- To Load PPX.SYS in CONFIG.SYS
- -----------------------------
- 1. Copy PPX.SYS from this diskette to your hard drive.
- For example:
-
- COPY A:PPX.SYS C:\
-
- If you wish to copy the file to a subdirectory, be
- sure to include the correct pathname.
-
- 2. Using a text editor, add the following line to your
- CONFIG.SYS file before any other device drivers:
-
- DEVICE=[path]PPX.SYS
-
- where [path] is the directory into which you copied
- the PPX.SYS file.
-
-
- To Load PPX.COM in AUTOEXEC.BAT (or other batch file)
- -----------------------------------------------------
- 1. Copy PPX.COM from this diskette to your hard drive.
- For example:
-
- COPY A:PPX.COM C:\
-
- If you wish to copy the file to a subdirectory, be
- sure to include the correct pathname.
-
- 2. Using a text editor, add the following line to your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT (or other batch) file before any other
- drivers:
-
- [path]PPX
-
- where [path] is the directory into which you copied
- the file PPX.COM.
-
-
- ADDITIONAL PARAMETERS
- =====================
- The following parameters are available with the PPX device
- drivers. The default value used when the driver is loaded with
- no switches is shown in brackets. In most cases, the default
- values will not need to be changed.
-
- LPT=[1] The physical parallel port on the PC to which the
- PPX is attached. Options are 1 (default), 2, or 3.
-
- A=[2] LPT value defined for PPX port A. Options are 1,
- 2 (default), or 3, where A=1 means that PPX port
- A is defined as LPT1, A=2 means port A is LPT2, and
- A=3 means port A is LPT3.
-
- B=[1] LPT value defined for PPX port B. Options are 1
- (default), 2, or 3, where B=1 means that PPX port
- B is defined as LPT1, B=2 means port B is LPT2, and
- B=3 means port B is LPT3.
-
- Note that the A= and B= switches MUST have different
- values.
-
- INT=[A] Designates which PPX port (A or B) will have
- interrupt capability. Options are A or B.
-
- For an on-screen summary of these options, type PPX ? at your
- DOS prompt.
-
-
- USING SETPPX
- ============
- The SETPPX.COM utility on the Device Drivers diskette can be used
- to set either port of the PPX as the default pass-through port.
- The intended purpose of this utility is to allow the use of a
- printer without loading either Xircom Pocket LAN Adapter drivers
- or PPX device drivers.
-
- The command line format is as follows:
-
- SETPPX A sets the pass-through to port A
- SETPPX B sets the pass-through to port B
- SETPPX ? displays the command line options
-
-

- TROUBLESHOOTING
- ===============
- If you have followed the installation and configuration
- instructions in the Hardware Installation Guide and this
- README file and are not able to get your printer to work
- with the PPX, try the following test before calling Xircom
- Technical Support:
-
- 1. Check all hardware connections.
-
- 2. If you have configured the PPX utility to load as a device
- driver (PPX.SYS) or as part of a *.BAT file (PPX.COM),
- remove (or "remark out") the PPX reference from the
- appropriate file.
-
- 3. Turn the computer off.
-
- 4. Connect the printer to the "A" port of the PPX.
-
- 5. Turn the computer back on.
-
- 6. From the Device Drivers diskette, run the SETPPX utility
- to set the default pass-through to port A. For example, type
-
- A:SETPPX A
-
- 7. Without loading any PPX device driver, attempt to access the
- printer attached to the PPX. For example, try printing a
- document.
-
- a. If the printer works through port A, verify that you are
- using the correct LPT and A and B values for your
- configuration. Contact Xircom Technical Support for
- assistance.
-
- b. If the device does not work through port A, remove the
- PPX from the computer's parallel port and attach the
- device directly to the computer. If the device works
- without the PPX, contact Xircom Technical Support for
- assistance.
