- diskette(s) so you can exchange it for future software updates.
-
- o You must use the INSTALL program to de-compress and copy the
- XTreePro Gold program files to a directory on your hard disk.
-
- The "GETTING STARTED" section in the manual discusses these procedures
- in more detail.
-
-
- **** XTreePro Gold DISTRIBUTION DISKS ****
-
-
- In your XTreePro Gold package there are two 5.25" distribution
- diskettes and one 3.5" diskette. Use whichever medium is appropriate
- for your system. The following files are on the diskette(s):
-
- Filename Description
- ------------ -------------------------------------------
-
- README .DOC This file
- INSTALL .COM The XTreePro Gold Install procedure programs
- INSTALL2.EXE
- INSTALL3.EXE
- XTGOLD1.ARC Disk 1 program files (collected into one file)
- XTGOLD2.ARC Disk 2 program files (collected into one file)
-
- The distribution .ARC files contain compressed versions of all the
- program files for XTreePro Gold. The Install procedure de-compresses
- these files and stores them on your hard disk. Following is a list of
- these files:
-

-
- After Installation, if you want to conserve space on your hard disk,
- you can delete files for functions that you do not intend to use. For
- example, if you are an experienced user, you can delete the XTG_HELP.*
- files. This will free up 112K disk space, at the expense of disabling
- Help.
-
- The XTGOLD.COM and XTG.EXE files are required for proper XTreePro Gold
- operation.
-
-
- **** ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE MANUAL ****
-
-
- 1. The Invert command has been modified to allow two variations.
- When the Invert (or CTRL/Invert) command is invoked, a menu is
- displayed. Choose the Tag option to toggle the file tag as described
- in the manual. Choose the Filespec option to reverse the File
- Specification and cause XTree Gold to display the files that do NOT
- match the Filespec. Use the Invert Filespec command again to cancel
- the reversal.
-
- 2. The Wash Disk function is a security feature, and is invoked by
- pressing ALT/W from the Directory Window. This command clears all
- unallocated areas of the current XTree Gold disk. This prevents anyone
- from being able to view or restore your deleted files.
-
- 3. The Relog Directory command only appears on the ALT-DIR Commands
- menu as ALT-F3, but also works from the Small and Expanded File
- Windows. Relog re-reads the information for the current directory
- only, allowing you to instantly refresh the file display after making
- changes to the disk with the eXecute command or by running a program
- from the Application Menu, or by using Open. However, if you made or
- deleted any directories, it's usually better to relog the entire disk.
- (This will keep the tree on the screen accurate.)
-
- 4. Pressing ALT-F9 from the Directory Window toggles the program
- between 25-line and EGA/VGA-43/51 line modes. This option is
- officially available via the config program or the /43 command line
- switch, but you may find it handy from the keyboard.
-
- 5. Instant Logging - Pressing ALT-Z from the tree and file windows
- saves all the current XTree Gold program data Zips you out to DOS. The
- next time you run the program, everything is restored (windows, files,
- tags, etc.), allowing you to continue what you were doing when you
- exited with ALT-Z. Be aware, however, that any changes to the disk
- structure when working in DOS will not be shown on the screen. Using
- the Relog Directory command can help.
-
- 6. When changing XTree Gold colors in the Configuration program,
- pressing one of the number keys "0" through "9" across the top row of
- the keyboard selects one of 10 predefined color sets. On a CGA system,
- you may have to fix up the flashing cursor bars by using a different
- Cursor background color.
-
- 7. At the CTRL/Batch file name prompt, if you place double
- exclamation marks in the batch file name, everything to the right of
- them is used for the line mask. You can then retrieve a file name and
- line mask from the input history with one selection.
-
- For example, entering "C:\FILELIST.TXT !! %1" for the CTRL/Batch file
- name will create a file in the root directory on drive C: named
- FILELIST.TXT. Each line in the file will contain the full
- DRIVE:\PATH\NAME.EXT of one of the tagged files from the file display.
- 8. In the CTRL/Search file command and the View F9 search command you
- can specify a wild card asterisk (*) in the target search string. For
- example, specifying "(*)" will search for any occurrence of left-right
- parentheses pairs. The '*' can be specified more than once, allowing
- you to perform 'fuzzy' searches.
-
- 9. Continuing interrupted mass operations - Pressing ALT-F8 from a
- file display after canceling a mass operation untags the files that
- have already been operated upon. This allows you to continue any
- tagged function when you cancel it by pressing ESC. For example:
-
- Let's say you tagged 500 files on hard drive C: and are ALT-
- Copying them to hard disk D: (duplicating the sub-directories
- on D: as the copy proceeds). About 1/2 way through the mass
- copy, D: fills up and you are sitting at the DESTINATION DISK
- FULL prompt. After scratching your head for a second you
- remember that there is a bunch of stuff on drive D: that can be
- deleted.
-
- 1. Press ESC to cancel the copy
- 2. Log drive D:
- 3. Delete unwanted files on D:
- 4. Press the plus (+) key to switch back to drive C:
- 5. Ctrl-Showall tagged files
- 6. Press ALT-F8 to untag the files that have already been
- copied.
-
- You can now continue the copy by pressing ALT-C, ENTER, ENTER.
-
-
- **** MISCELLANEOUS TIPS AND HINTS ****
-
-
- 1. In the split window display, moving around between the various
- windows can get sluggish when you have thousands of files logged on
- several disks. Setting the sort order to Path(on) will speed things
- up.
-
- 2. During the operation of XTreePro Gold, there may be occasions when
- DOS or TSR programs display unwanted information on your screen.
- Pressing F2 from the Directory or File window re-displays the entire
- XTree Gold screen.
-
- F2 can also be handy from the CTRL/Showall display. If you have
- untagged some of the files in CTRL/Showall, pressing F2 will condense
- the list, and show only the currently tagged files.
-
- 3. You can use an undocumented command line switch (/E) to cause the
- program to bypass the "Missing overlay" error prompt when an overlay is
- not found. This can be handy if you delete some of the XTreePro Gold
- overlay files to conserve disk space. If you use the /E switch, the
- program will beep once to remind you that the requested overlay has not
- been found, but will not display an error message and force you to
- press a key.
-
-
- **** IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS ****
-
-
- If you encounter problems during the operation of XTree Gold, please
- read this file and the XTree Gold manual and try the operation again.
- If the problem can't be resolved, gather up the following
- information...
-
- o your serial number (from the distribution diskette)
- o contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS files
- o the make and model of your computer
- o your disk drive configuration
- o a full description of the difficulty
- ... then either drop us a line or give us a call.
