- Notes on HTPM II UPDATE Program - Version 2.01
-
-
- Conversion from HPM
-
- You can't convert Harvard Project Manager (HPM) files
- directly to HTPM II files. You must first convert
- the files to HTPM Version 1.1 by using HTPM 1.1 to
- get and save each file.
-
-
- Conversion of old HTPM 1.1x projects
-
- 1. UPDATE automatically produces one .ARC file that contains
- all related subprojects. When you get the .ARC file in
- HTPM II, all the subproject links are created
- automatically.
-
- 2. If you've used a subproject in more than one superproject,
- UPDATE converts the subproject only once. Check projects to
- be sure all subprojects are linked correctly.
-
- 3. If you set "Show Times" to No, HTPM II assumes (but doesn't
- display) a time of 9:00 am. HTPM 1.1x, on the other hand,
- assumed a time of 12:00 noon. So you may have small amounts
- of positive or negative slack where you didn't expect to
- see it.
-
- If you haven't put any actual dates in your project yet,
- clear and re-enter the project start date in the Project
- form. If the project is already under way, a date you
- entered might look the same as a date already there, but
- HTPM may be storing the dates with a difference of three
- hours (9:00 am to 12:00 noon).
-
- 4. While HTPM 1.1x allowed you to allocate resources to sub-
- project tasks, HTPM II does not. The UPDATE program
- doesn't copy subproject task allocations to the HTPM II
- file.
-
-
-
-
- Conversion of Time Line projects
-
- 1. Time Line allows you to create redundant links between
- tasks. You may see the redundant links on the PERT chart.
- To delete them, select Remove lag/link from the PERT chart
- Edit menu.
-
- 2. UPDATE converts only the most current version of Time Line
- projects (the *.t@0 files).
-
- 3. UPDATE sets the project start date at the earliest task
- start date.
-
- 4. You must manually link Time Line subprojects. (Time Line
- calls the connected superproject and subprojects "summary"
- schedules.)
-
- 5. It's a good idea to link dangling tasks to common start and
- end milestones before converting Time Line files.
-
- 6. UPDATE creates a calendar with the same name as each
- project. We recommend that you use a single calendar for
- all your company's projects.
-
- 7. HTPM doesn't use the Time Line "daily hours schedule."
- Adjust the Hrs/Day field on the Calendar form, and make
- manual corrections for durations of less than a day.
-
- 8. UPDATE truncates Time Line task names to 12 characters, but
- puts the full task name and the Note 1 and Note 2 fields
- in the HTPM Description field.
-
- 9. UPDATE converts a Time Line Span task to an HTPM task that's
- scheduled ASAP. The duration of the HTPM task is equal to
- Time Line's calculated span duration.
-
- 10. UPDATE converts tasks with 0 duration into milestones.
-
- 11. If your Time Line project includes "material" costs:
-
- UPDATE converts unit costs to resources with a quantity
- of *******, and assigns a time unit of one minute.
- When some number of a unit cost item is allocated to a
- task, the Planned work field in the allocations
- list is set to the number of units allocated. Then
- UPDATE computes planned cost as the number of units
- times the unit cost.
-
- UPDATE puts fixed cost materials on the resource list
- with a quantity of ****** and a time unit of one
- minute. But if you've allocated the fixed cost
- materials to a task, UPDATE displays the total of the
- fixed cost items in the Other cost field of the Task
- form.
-
- UPDATE treats variable costs like resources, but
- automatically assigns a quantity of ******.
-
- 12. UPDATE converts only the first 200 schedules.
-
-
-
- Notes common to either conversion
-
- 1. UPDATE creates Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) for the
- projects by grouping tasks by tens. The groups of ten
- appear under a dummy WBS task under the top-most WBS task,
- which is named for the project.
-
- To rearrange the tasks for your project, start a new Work
- Breakdown Structure under the top WBS task. When you've
- broken items down far enough, move tasks out from under the
- groups of ten, to the appropriate work breakdown tasks
- you've added. When you've finished, check the PERT chart.
- You may want to delete milestones that were added while
- you adjusted the Work Breakdown Structure.
-
- In addition, since neither Time Line nor HTPM 1.1 support
- WBS, the WBS code field will not be filled in for any of
- the tasks. To enter codes, use the Task form while in
- the Work Breakdown Structure.
-
- 2. When you get your projects with HTPM II, be sure to check
- the working hours per day field in HTPM II's Resource list.
- UPDATE assumes all resources work 8 hours/day.
