  11. WinQVT is a DEC VT220/102/52 terminal emulator and communications program
  12. which has been created to run under Microsoft Windows as a true 'Windows'
  13. application.  WinQVT provides exceptionally complete VT emulation,
  14. including double-wide and double-high characters, the full 'Special Graphics'
  15. character set, smooth scrolling, 132-columns, and user-defined keys.
  16.  
  17. In addition to terminal emulation, WinQVT offers file transfer facilities
  18. using five popular protocols - Kermit, XMODEM, YMODEM, ZMODEM, and CompuServe
  19. B-Plus, as well as auto-dial and auto-login capabilities. Since WinQVT is a
  20. Windows application, these operations, once started, may be sent to the
  21. background, thereby permitting the use of the machine for other tasks.

  23. This document does not constitute full user documentation, but it does tell
  24. you what you need to know to use and register WinQVT.  For a list of recent
  25. changes, see the accompanying RELNOTES file.

  28. Hardware Requirements
  29. ────────────────────-

  31. WinQVT, like most Windows applications, is not practical on anything less than
  32. an 8-mHz AT or compatible. In addition, WinQVT requires a VGA, EGA or Hercules
  33. Graphics Adapter. Even though Windows will run on a CGA-equipped machine, it
  34. is our judgment that the CGA does not provide adequate resolution for this
  35. application.

  37. The font file included in this package is intended for use with EGA-type
  38. displays (resolution 640x350). Fonts which are optimized for Hercules,
  39. VGA, and Super-VGA displays are provided to registered users.
  40.  
  41. The only keyboard supported by WinQVT is the 101-key 'Enhanced' keyboard.
  42. This is the keyboard most frequently found on computers which are powerful
  43. enough to run Windows, and it also the one which is best suited to emulate
  44. the DEC LK201 keyboard.

  46. If you intend to use the modem-control features of WinQVT, you must have a
  47. Hayes or Hayes-compatible modem. The modem must be set up to allow computer
  48. control of the DTR signal; consult the modem user's manual for instructions
  49. on how to do this.

  55. WinQVT version 4.3x requires Windows 3.0 or higher. WinQVT will not
  56. run on older versions of Windows.

  72. Notes on Operation
  73. ─────────────────-

  75. The WinQVT screen contains a standard Windows menu bar across the top of the
  76. screen. There are five pull-down menus which are used to operate the program:
  77.  
  78.         File            Perform file operations, e.g. load and save
  79.         Edit            For moving data to and from the Clipboard
  80.         Setup           Configure WinQVT operating parameters
  81.         Modem           Control a Hayes-compatible modem
  82.         Transfer        Perform protocol file transfers
  83.  
  84. After WinQVT is started, you must perform a config operation in order to begin
  85. communications. This may be done in one of two ways: you may invoke the
  86. 'Port' option from the 'Setup' menu, or you may load a pre-existing config
  87. file (using the 'Open' option from the 'File' menu). A sample config file,
  88. 'DEFAULT.VT', is provided with this package.

  90. WinQVT config files are created by the 'Save As' menu option (File menu). They
  91. must have the extension '.VT' in order to be recognized by the 'Open' menu
  92. option.

  95. The most convenient way to start WinQVT is to combine the program load and
  96. configuration into a single step. To do this, you should include the line
  97.  
  98.         vt=winqvt.exe ^.vt
  99.  
  100. in the '[extensions]' section of your WIN.INI file. Having done this, you
  101. can start and configure WinQVT simply by double-clicking on the name of the
  102. desired config file.

  105. Dialing
  106. ──────-
  107.  
  108. Phone numbers may be associated with specific host configurations by
  109. placing a 'phone=' directive in the .VT file for that host.  This number
  110. will then come up automatically when the 'Dial' menu is invoked.
  111.  
  112. WinQVT also supports the use of a modem initialization string. You should
  113. store your initialization string as an 'init=' directive in the QVT.GLB
  114. file. A reasonable default initialization string - for Hayes 2400 modems -
  115. is included in the supplied copy of QVT.GLB. If you modify the default
  116. initialization string, MAKE SURE that you do NOT edit out the 'q0' and
  117. 'v0' commands. These are CRITICAL to the proper functioning of the WinQVT
  118. dialer!

  120. NOTE: if your modem responds to a carriage return as a command terminator
  121. (as most modems do), you MUST include a carriage return, notated as ^M,
  122. at the end of your initialization string.  For example, 'init=at&c1&d2x1^M'
  123. would be a valid initialization string for a typical Hayes-compatible modem.

  126. File Transfer

  129. When performing Kermit file transfers, make sure that you set the parity of
  130. the remote Kermit so that it matches WinQVT's parity setting. Otherwise, the
  131. transfer will fail.

  133. The version of YMODEM included in WinQVT is a true 'batch' YMODEM imple-
  134. mentation.  The YMODEM offered by some bulletin boards is really XMODEM-1K;
  135. if you have trouble transferring files to or from a BBS using YMODEM, try
  136. using WinQVT's XMODEM protocol instead.
  137.  
  138. In order for the CompuServe B-Plus protocol to work, you must be operating
  139. at 8-bits, no parity. This may require that you modify your CompuServe
  140. user profile (with the 'GO TERMINAL' command).
  141.  
  142. After a file transfer has been started, you can use the mouse to switch to
  143. another Windows application while the transfer is proceeding.  Note that
  144. this must be a true Windows application; switching to a 'standard' applic-
  145. ation will cause the file transfer to time out.
  146.  
  147. NOTE: WinQVT is quite careful to allow messages for other applications to
  148. be processed during file transfers. If there are many such messages, there
  149. may be a noticable impact on the speed of the file transfer. We recommend
  150. that you terminate applications such as 'FISHES', which generate a continuous
  151. stream of messages, before beginning a WinQVT file transfer.

  154. Keyboard Mapping

  157. The version of WinQVT provided here is intended for use on computers with
  158. the 101-key 'Enhanced' keyboard.  As of version 3.82, WinQVT provides the
  159. preferred mapping of the four 'PF' keys, across the top of the numeric
  160. keypad (See the Release Notes for more on key mapping).

  197. The font file included in this package is designed for use with EGA
  198. display adapters. It will work with VGA and Hercules displays, but the
  199. character size will be somewhat smaller than the optimum for those displays.
  200. If you have a VGA, Hercules, or Super-VGA display on your system, you
  201. may request that a font file tailored for your display be shipped to you
  202. when you register your copy of WinQVT.

  205. Known Bugs

  208. WinQVT may hang your system if you use the <Alt-Tab> key combination to
  209. cycle through your Windows applications. The problem will not occur if you
  210. use <Alt-Esc> instead.
