  6.     documentation  for  QUATTRO PRO.  Please  read  it in its entirety.  All

  26.     1. Installation
  27.     ---------------
  28.       To install QUATTRO PRO on your hard disk:
  29.  
  30.          o Place Disk 1 in drive A.
  31.          o Type A:INSTALL and press ENTER.
  32.          o Follow the directions displayed on the screen.
  33.          o Type Q to load the program.
  34.  
  35.       If you have difficulty reading the text displayed by the Install  pro-
  36.       gram, use the optional command line parameter, /B to force  install to
  37.       use black and white colors. Type
  38.  
  39.                               A:INSTALL /B<ENTER>
  40.  
  41.       Specifying the /B parameter may be necessary if you are using  an  LCD
  42.       screen or a system that has a color graphics adapter with a monochrome
  43.       or composite monitor.

  46.     2. Network Installation and LASERJET.BGI
  47.     ----------------------------------------
  48.       The LASERJET.BGI file is not ready to be shared in a network
  49.       installation of QUATTRO PRO. Using DOS, the network administrator
  50.       should put a copy of LASERJET.BGI on each network users "private"
  51.       directory.  This is the directory that has the ".MP" files.  The copy
  52.       of LASERJET.BGI that is on the shared QUATTRO PRO directory (the
  53.       directory where Q.EXE and Q.VRM reside) should then be erased.  The
  54.       next Beta release of QUATTRO PRO will allow all network users access
  55.       to LASERJET.BGI on the shared directory.

  59.     3. Updating an Earlier Version of QUATTRO PRO to Version 2.0
  60.     ------------------------------------------------------------
  61.       Before installing the current version of QUATTRO PRO, you will need to
  62.       delete the earlier version. If any spreadsheet data files (*.W??) or
  63.       clip art data files (*.CLP) are in the QPRO\ directory, copy them to a
  64.       different directory. Then delete all files in the QPRO\ and QPRO\FONTS
  65.       directories (DEL *.*). If you attempt to intermix files from both
  66.       versions, you will get unpredictable behavior when you execute QUATTRO
  67.       PRO.

  70.     4. Using Extended Memory for VROOMM Object Caching
  71.     --------------------------------------------------
  72.       QUATTRO PRO can use up to 512Kb of extended memory to store additional
  73.       executable modules in memory. This feature is called the VROOMM Object
  74.       Cache. To use it, include the /X parameter when executing QUATTRO PRO:
  75.

  78.       Generally, when more memory is available,  QUATTRO  PRO  runs  faster.
  79.       This feature in particular is ideal for use with computers that have a
  80.       total of 1Mb memory available with no EMS  (Expanded Memory Specifica-
  81.       tions) driver installed.  When working on large spreadsheets,  QUATTRO
  82.       PRO can use the extended memory to significantly enhance  performance.
  83.       However, when more than 1Mb of total memory is available, an EMS driv-
  84.       er should be used because QUATTRO PRO can use  the  additional  memory
  85.       for storing more spreadsheet data and/or executable modules.

  87.       WARNING: Some disk cache drivers, RAM disk drivers, and TSR (Terminate
  88.       and Stay Resident) programs may also use extended memory in such a way
  89.       that  QUATTRO PRO  cannot  recognize  their  presence.  Therefore , we
  90.       STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you do not use any  disk  cache  drivers,  RAM
  91.       disk drivers, or TSR programs when  using  the  /X  parameter  because
  92.       these  programs  may clash with QUATTRO PRO's use of the extended mem-
  93.       ory.

  96.     5. Bitstream Fonts: New in QUATTRO PRO
  97.     --------------------------------------
  98.       With this version of QUATTRO PRO, type quality has  been  greatly  en-
  99.       hanced  through the use of Bitstream's Fontware Typefaces and enabling
  100.       software, producing high-quality bitmap fonts. However, when you  look
  101.       closely at printed  output  from  QUATTRO PRO,  you  may  occasionally
  102.       notice  extra  white  space between pairs of characters. This is not a
  103.       problem with your fonts. This extra white space  is  commonly  reduced
  104.       using  a  composition  function  called kerning.  At the present time,
  105.       QUATTRO PRO does not implement kerning.

  108.     6. Testing Your Expanded Memory Specification: EMSTEST.COM
  109.     ----------------------------------------------------------
  110.       Included with QUATTRO PRO is a program to test  your  Expanded  Memory
  111.       Specification (EMS)  hardware/software. The test will verify that your
  112.       EMS hardware/software is working correctly. If you have problems using
  113.       QUATTRO PRO with your EMS, run EMSTEST.COM (type EMSTEST  at  the  DOS
  114.       prompt) and follow the instructions.

  117.     7. Notes on Sample Clip Art
  118.     ---------------------------
  119.       Included with QUATTRO PRO is a PicturePak (TM) Clip Art Sampler of  64
  120.       different images, from PicturePak by Marketing Graphics Inc (MGI). The
  121.       installation  program will automatically unzip the clip art images  to
  122.       your QUATTRO PRO directory. To include any of  these  images  in  your
  123.       QUATTRO PRO graphs, choose / Graph|Annotate to go into the QUATTRO PRO
  124.       annotation feature.  Choose / Clipboard|Paste From and  pick  the .CLP
  125.       file  you  wish  to paste into your graph. There are many other images
  126.       available from MGI.

  129.       clip art images for QUATTRO PRO.

  132.     8. Using Mouse Drivers with EGA and VGA Graphics Cards
  133.     ------------------------------------------------------
  134.       Early versions of mouse drivers don't  support  screen  display  modes
  135.       larger  than  80  columns  by 24 lines. As a result, your mouse driver
  136.       might not work correctly when you use QUATTRO PRO's  enhanced  display
  137.       modes  EGA 80x43, VGA 80x50, or EGA/VGA graphics modes.  The following
  138.       chart will assist you in determining if your mouse  driver  will  work
  139.       correctly with the enhanced display modes.

  149.     9. Legal Size Paper and Graphics Printing on HP-LaserJet Printers
  150.     -----------------------------------------------------------------
  151.       If you are using an HP LaserJet IID, IIP, or III  with  a  legal  size
  152.       paper  tray,   you  will  need to manually change some settings on the
  153.       front panel of the printer.  On the IID,  IIP,  and III  you  need  to
  154.       select PAPER=LEGAL. In addition, the IIP needs to have MP=LEGAL.
  155.  
  156.       You should also make sure that the ORIENTATION=P  whenever you are do-
  157.       ing graphics or graph printing on these printers.  
  158.  
  159.       The above statements don't apply to the HP-LaserJet II.  Consult  your
  160.       HP-LaserJet Users' Guide for information on changing the  front  panel
  161.       settings.

  164.     10. Network Printing
  165.     --------------------
  166.       If you encounter extraneous blank pages before and after printing to a
  167.       network printer, use device Parallel 1 or Parallel 2. Do not  use  the
  168.       logical device options LPT1 or LPT2. This device option is set through
  169.       
  170.              /Options|Hardware|Printers|1st (or 2nd)Printer|Device
  171.  
  172.       The Parallel 1 device is equivalent to LPT1 and Parallel 2 is  equiva-
  173.       lent to LPT2. If your network printers are installed using LPT3, LPT4,
  174.       or LPT5, you  must  redefine  these  options  for LPT1 or LPT2 and use
  175.       Parallel 1 or Parallel 2 Device options within QUATTRO PRO.

  178.     11. DIF File Format
  179.     -------------------
  180.       QUATTRO PRO supports the DIF file format for data  interchange  devel-
  181.       oped by Software Arts Products Corporation and used by  VisiCalc.  Al-
  182.       though  other programs may import/export DIF files, they aren't neces-
  183.       sarily the same file format. Consequently, they may not be  compatible
  184.       with QUATTRO PRO. Please refer to the  appropriate  documentation  for
  185.       information regarding compatibility with the original DIF file format.
