- PrintCache Release 2.3a
- =======================
-
- Readme File
- -----------
-
-
- Thank you for purchasing PrintCache. We hope that PrintCache will
- dramatically augment your productivity, letting you accomplish much
- more during your workday.
-
- If you need to contact us, our address is:
-
- LaserTools Corporation
- 1250 45th Street, Suite 100
- Emeryville, CA 94608
- (415) 420-8777

-
- This README file contains additions and changes to the Owner's Manual.
- We recommend you read this before installing PrintCache.
-
-
- AUTOCAD 386
- -----------
-
- When using a "plotter device" (such as a PostScript printer or
- plotter) with AutoCad 386, you no longer need to print to file,
- exit AutoCad, and then copy it into the PrintCache buffer (as described
- on page 35 of the PrintCache manual). With AutoCad 386 you can plot
- directly to PrintCache in one step. You still use the "output to file"
- option, but enter as the file name your PrintCache buffer port
- name with the extension "PRN". For example, if your buffer port is
- LPT1, output to a file named "LPT1.PRN". The PrintCache Buffer will
- intercept the file output from AutoCad and send it directly to your
- printer or plotter.

- WORD PERFECT USERS WITH EGA OR VGA SCREENS
- ------------------------------------------
-
- Word Perfect configures EGA and VGA screens into 512 character
- mode, rather than the normal 256 characters. When PrintCache pops
- up, the menu is displayed in the wrong character set, and appears
- to be garbage. This is a non-crashing problem. The PrintCache
- pop up menu commands still operate, and the menu will pop down
- using X or Esc, properly restoring the Word Perfect screen.

- VDISK.SYS USERS -- BEWARE OF SMARTDRV.SYS!
- ------------------------------------------
-
- BE VERY CAREFUL, if you use SMARTDRV & VDISK in extended memory.
- Loading SMARTDRV (or any other driver which uses Microsoft's XMS
- specification), after you've loaded VDISK, will prevent other
- utilities from being able to detect VDISK's location. Thus, if you
- load PrintCache with an extended memory buffer, it could
- unwittingly allocate its buffer on top of the VDISK RAM drive.
- There are several solutions to this problem:
-
- 1. Microsoft recommends using the RAMDRIVE.SYS program
- instead of VDISK to create the RAM disk when using
- SMARTDRV. RAMDRIVE is fully compatible with SMARTDRV
- and PrintCache.
-
- 2. Load VDISK after SMARTDRV, in which case PrintCache
- can determine what memory each is using and avoid
- conflicts.
-
- 3. Change your PrintCache buffer type from extended memory to
- hard disk.

- USING PRINTCACHE WITH OTHER PRINTING UTILITY PROGRAMS
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- If you use printer utility programs which need to process printed
- data "on-the-fly," such as printer emulation software or font
- managers, you should do two things:
-
- 1. You should load all such programs after PrintCache;
-
- 2. You should use the /T load option, i.e.
-
- PCACHE /T
-
-
- Using "/T" forces PrintCache to pass each character through your
- other printing utility programs. The "/T" option should be used
- with Glyphix, LaserControl, PSFX, and other utilities that process
- printed data "on-the-fly."
-
- Using "/T" will slow down PrintCache's print buffering speed by
- about 50% (i.e., your keyboard will be freed slower). If this is
- troublesome, only use "/T" when you have to.
-
-
-
-

-
-
- USING PRINTCACHE WITH DESQVIEW
- ------------------------------
-
- Desqview users should be aware of two things:
-
- 1. You must load PrintCache before you load Desqview.
-
- 2. You can not popup while Desqview is loaded. Instead, we
- have included a program called PCMENU.COM which works as a
- replacement for the pop-up menu. You can run PCMENU in a
- Desqview window (using full screen default parameters, 10k
- for program size) just like an application program. PCMENU
- is located in the \GOODIES sub-directory of your master disk.
- PCMENU can be used even when running PrintCache in "Small"
- mode with the Pop-Up Menu disabled. If you are running two
- versions of PrintCache for two different printers, as described
- in Appendix B of the PrintCache manual, PCMENU will default to
- the first PrintCache loaded. You can use PCMENU for the second
- printer (PCACHE2.COM) by entering the command "PCMENU /M2".

-
- Happy Printing, and tell all your friends to stop waiting for their
- printer!
