- technical questions of any type, please call our Technical Service
- Department. They may be reached Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5:30PM
- EST at (603) 644-5555.
-
- Installing and Starting the Magic Mirror Upgrade
- ------------------------------------------------
-
- The first step in using the Magic Mirror upgrade is to INSTALL the
- programs onto your diskette or hard disk. You should install the new
- programs into the directory you were using for your existing Magic
- Mirror programs. For example, if your programs are currently installed
- in the \MM directory on drive C,
-
- 1) Place the upgrade diskette in drive A.
-
- 2) Make drive A the current drive by typing:
-
- A:
-
- and pressing the <Enter> key.
-
- 3) Type:
-
- INSTALL A: C:\MM
-
- and press the <Enter> key.
-
- For further information on installation, please refer to the
- Installation section of the Magic Mirror manual.
-
- Starting Magic Mirror
- ---------------------
- The easiest way to start the Magic Mirror program is to change the
- current directory (CHDIR or CD) to the one in which it is installed.
- For example, if Magic Mirror is installed in the \MM directory on drive
- C, type the following commands:
-
- C: <Enter>
- CD \MM <Enter>
- MM <Enter>
-
- Magic Mirror is now running. For more information, refer to the manual
- and to the upgrade information which follows.
- Memory Use
- ----------
-
- Magic Mirror can be used on any system with at least 128K of RAM. Magic
- Mirror itself consumes from 25K to 65K of lower RAM based on two
- factors:
-
- 1) If Expanded RAM is used
- 2) If context-sensitive help is enabled
-
- In the default configuration, Magic Mirror is set to use Expanded RAM if
- it is available, and On-line Help is enabled. In this configuration,
- Magic Mirror uses 37K. The following chart lists the different
- available configurations for Magic Mirror, and the RAM used for each
- configuration.
-
- Using
- Expanded Help Lower Expanded
- RAM enabled RAM Use RAM Use
-
- Yes Yes 37K 48K
- Yes No 25K 48K
- No Yes 65K zeroK
- No No 53K zeroK
-
- Magic Mirror can use Expanded RAM which conforms to the
- Lotus/Intel/Microsoft Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) version 3.2 or
- greater. This type of RAM can be assigned for use by Magic Mirror to
- minimize the amount of lower RAM (640K) used.
-
- Magic Mirror can use Extended RAM for Image Buffer overflow only. See
- para. 6.11 in the Operating Instructions for more information on
- Extended RAM use.
-
- Using Magic Mirror's On-line, Context-sensitive Help
- ----------------------------------------------------
-
- Magic Mirror version 2 is equipped with on-line, context-sensitive help.
- Additional information is always available about the particular function
- you are performing. Simply press the <F1> key at any point within Magic
- Mirror, and a screen of information pops up to explain the current
- function you are using, or the current menu option which is highlighted.
-
- The Help features uses 12K of memory. If you wish to conserve RAM you
- may disable help. Type HELP OFF before starting Magic Mirror. The HELP
- OFF and HELP ON commands are described in described in step (7) below.
-
- To use Help:
-
- 1) Magic Mirror must be loaded into RAM (using the MM command) and
- invoked by pressing one of its Hot Key combinations (<Alt-M> for
- the Main menu, <Alt-C> for the Capture Pattern menu. or <Alt-I> for
- the Image Control menu).
-
- 2) Press <F1> at any point within Magic Mirror. Information displays
- about the function you are using, or the current menu item which is
- highlighted.
-
- 3) Each Help topic consists of one or more pages of information. If
- more than one page is supplied for a selected topic, "Next Page"
- displays at the bottom of the Help screen. To view the next page,
- use the arrow keys to highlight "Next Page" and press <Enter>, or
- press the <Pg Dn> key.
-
- 4) There are three ways to back up through the screens within Help:
-
- A) If you have viewed more than one page, press the <Pg Up> key
- to move back a page.
-
- B) If you have viewed more than one topic, press the <Backspace>
- key to go back to the beginning of a previous topic.
-
- C) Press the <Esc> key to quit Help and return to where you were
- in Magic Mirror.
-
- 5) Embedded and Related topics provide access to supplemental or
- related information from within some Help screens.
-
- --- Embedded topics are shown in bold type within the text of a
- Help screen. For information on an embedded topic, use the
- arrow keys to highlight the topic and press <Enter>.
-
- --- Related topics are listed in the box at the bottom of some
- Help screens. If there are two lines of topics in the box at
- the bottom of the Help screen, the first line lists the
- related topic(s). (The second line lists the Help Index
- option and the End Help option.) For information on a related
- topic, use the arrow keys to highlight a topic and press
- <Enter>.
-
- 6) A General Help Index is available which contains information on all
- of Magic Mirror's functions:
-
- Use the arrow keys to highlight the "Help Index" topic, which
- appears in the box at the bottom of every Help screen. If there
- are two lines of topics in the box, the Help Index option displays
- on the second line.
-
- NOTE
- The Help Index also includes information on how to use Magic
- Mirror's "MMCONFIG" and "MMLIB" programs. For information on using
- these programs, use the arrow keys to highlight "Starting MMCONFIG"
- or "Starting MMLIB". These two topics are found on the third page
- of the Help Index.
-
- 7) The Help feature of Magic Mirror requires 12K of RAM. If you wish
- to use Magic Mirror without on-line Help, type HELP OFF before
- starting Magic Mirror.
-
- For example, to start Magic Mirror with on-line Help disabled, type
- the following commands:
-
- HELP OFF <Enter>
- MM <Enter>
-
- Magic Mirror's Help feature is disabled. It will remain disabled
- until you reactivate it by typing the HELP ON command, and then
- restart the Magic Mirror software.
-
- To start Magic Mirror and reactivate Help, type the following
- commands:
-
- HELP ON <Enter>
- MM <Enter>
-
- Using Keyboard Macro Programs to Operate Magic Mirror
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- Magic Mirror version 2 can be operated entirely with key sequences sent
- from macro programs such as Keyworks, Superkey, Prokey, and others. The
- macro program should be loaded before Magic Mirror.
-
- This allows you to use a macro program to invoke Magic Mirror and
- capture or transfer data, operating your application program between
- each step, as needed.
-
- Examples:
-
- The following examples of macro use assume that (1) the Magic Mirror Hot
- key is defined as the <Alt> key, (2) the Capture key is defined as the
- <C> key, and (3) the Image Control key is defined as the <I> key.
-
- Information on Hot key definitions and their effect on macro control is
- contained later in this file.
-
- 1) The following key sequence may be defined as one macro command and
- used to invoke Magic Mirror, select a pre-defined Capture Pattern,
- and capture data:
-
- <Alt-C> Invoke Magic Mirror to capture screen data.
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <Enter> Select the third Capture Pattern in the list.
- <Enter> Capture the data from the screen and return control
- to the applications program.
-
- 2) The following key sequence may be defined as one macro command and
- used to invoke Magic Mirror, select a pre-defined Image Style
- Control, and begin transferring data:
-
- <Alt-I> Invoke Magic Mirror to transfer previously captured
- data.
- <down arrow>
- <Enter> Select Choose Image Style Control.
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <down arrow>
- <Enter> Select the fifth Image Style Control record in the
- list.
- <Enter> Select Begin Transfer to initiate transfer of data
- from Magic Mirror's buffer to the current
- application program.
- Limitations:
-
- The Magic Mirror activation keys (i.e., <ALT-M>, <CTRL-I>, etc.) cannot
- be automatically 'learned' by your macro program while Magic Mirror is
- loaded and active, as Magic Mirror does not pass these keys through to
- the macro program. After your macro definition is complete, you must
- edit the macro (using the Editing function of your macro program) and
- insert the appropriate activation key combination.
-
- To pass keystrokes to Magic Mirror from a macro program, the Hot key for
- Magic Mirror MUST be defined as one of the following three selections:
- No Hot Key, the <Alt> key, or the <Ctrl> key. In addition, the four
- control keys defined for use with the Hot key (the Menu key, Capture
- key, Image Control key and the Transfer key) MUST be within the
- boundaries specified in the following chart:
-
- +-------------------------------+-------------------------------+
- | | THE CORRESPONDING CONTROL |
- | IF THE HOT KEY IS DEFINED AS: | KEYS MAY BE DEFINED AS: |
- +-------------------------------+-------------------------------+
- | No Hot key | any key on the keyboard. |
- +-------------------------------+-------------------------------+
- | <Alt> | <F1> through <F10> |
- | | (and <F11>, <F12> if the |
- | | application program uses |
- | | enhanced keyboard calls) |
- | | <A> - <Z> |
- | | <1> - <0> (top row) |
- | | <-> (top row) |
- | | <=> (top row) |
- | | <space bar> |
- +-------------------------------+-------------------------------+
- | <Ctrl> | <A> - <Z> |
- +-------------------------------+-------------------------------+
-
-
- A Change to Magic Mirror's Default Capture Settings
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- When data is captured, Magic Mirror automatically assigns an Image Style
- Control (ISC) based upon the settings specified in the MMCONFIG program.
- Formerly, Magic Mirror was supplied configured NEVER to allow an
- override to this automatic ISC at the time of the capture. This has
- been changed to ALWAYS allow an override to the automatically assigned
- ISC at capture time. This means that the OPTIONS Menu always displays
- when you capture a block of data, unless you change the setting for the
- "When to allow ISC Override for CAPTURE" option in the MMCONFIG program.
- Using Magic Mirror with Software Carousel
- -----------------------------------------
-
- The Magic Mirror software has been specifically designed to work with
- the Software Carousel, so that you may freely capture and transfer
- information from among many programs loaded in Carousel partitions.
-
- To accomplish the above, load the Magic Mirror software BEFORE loading
- Software Carousel. This provides the functioning of the Magic Mirror to
- all of the Carousel's individual partitions.
-
- Alternately, you may load the Magic Mirror software into one of the
- Carousel's partitions, AFTER you have started the Software Carousel.
- This only allows Magic Mirror to capture and transfer information from
- programs running in the same partition as it is loaded. This is of
- limited use and therefore is not recommended.
-
- Using Magic Mirror with DoubleDOS
- ---------------------------------
-
- If you are using DoubleDOS version 4.2 or higher, Magic Mirror should be
- loaded before starting DoubleDOS. This allows you to access Magic
- Mirror from either DoubleDOS memory section.
-
- If you are using a version of DoubleDOS prior to 4.2, you must load
- Magic Mirror AFTER DoubleDOS in only ONE of the memory sections. You
- will be able to use Magic Mirror only from within that memory section.
- If you wish to upgrade your DoubleDOS software, so that you may run
- Magic Mirror before DoubleDOS, please call our Sales Department at
- 800/272-9900 (603/627-9900 from outside of the United States or within
- New Hampshire).
-
- Using Magic Mirror with Resident Cubit (CUBITR)
- -----------------------------------------------
-
- If you use SoftLogic Solutions' data compression program, CUBIT, in its'
- resident mode (CUBITR), you must load Magic Mirror (using the MM
- command) BEFORE you load Resident Cubit (using the CUBITR command) for
- proper functioning. The following is a sample AUTOEXEC.BAT file with
- Magic Mirror and CUBITR loaded in the correct order:
-
- +-----------------+
- | AUTOEXEC.BAT |
- +-----------------+
- | DATE |
- | TIME |
- | PATH=C:\;C:\DOS |
- | MM |
- | CUBITR |
- +-----------------+
