  14. │  and corrections, and finally some notes specific to    │
  15. │  our international users.                               │

  29. When you start Magellan for the first time, you will see
  30. a brief "tour" to help you get going.  You will be given
  31. the opportunity to skip the tour, retain the tour to
  32. run at a later time, or deactivate the tour.

  34. The introductory tour was created entirely using the new
  35. Magellan macro features that allow you to create your
  36. own customized message and dialog boxes.

  55.   Graphics viewers for PCX and GIF files are included.

  57. ■ Notes on Graphics Viewers (PIC, DRW, PCX and GIF)

  59.   * You can view these graphics files only if you have an
  60.     EGA or VGA configuration, in 80 column by 25, 43 or
  61.     50 line mode.  If you have a Mono, Hercules, CGA or
  62.     MCGA configuration, graphics files will be displayed
  63.     using the Generic Text Viewer.

  65.   * You can interrupt the drawing of a graphics file by
  66.     pressing any key.  "Key pressed" will appear in the View
  67.     Window, and the effect of the key will be carried out.

  69.   * Sample files can be found in the MGSAMPLE and MGDEMO
  70.     subdirectories created by Magellan during installation.

  76. ■ The Merge Utility
  77.  
  78.   * You may end up with duplicate entries in your merged
  79.     dialog boxes.  If so, use Delete (F3) to remove any
  80.     duplicates.

  82.   * If you reassign function keys, your Version 1 macros
  83.     may need to have function key keywords translated to
  84.     Version 2 keywords.  For example, if you used {F2} in
  85.     a Version 1 macro and you have reassigned the F2 key
  86.     in Version 2, you should change {F2} to {Copy} in any
  87.     Version 2 macros.

  89.   * If you are a Version 1 user, we recommend that you
  90.     re-index from scratch in order to take full advantage 
  91.     of new viewers and enhanced speed.  If you choose to 
  92.     convert your Version 1 index setups using Merge, you 
  93.     will then also need to copy any old *.IX1 files from 
  94.     your old Magellan program directory to your new one.

  100. ■ Special VGA Video Option
  101.  
  102.   If you have a VGA configuration (not plasma or LCD laptop),
  103.   you can run MG94 instead of MG to load Magellan in a
  104.   high-resolution 94x36 text mode.  MG94 is a subset of
  105.   UltraVision by Personics.  To run it, type the following
  106.   at the DOS prompt from your Magellan program directory:

  110.   The full UltraVision product provides VGA and EGA systems
  111.   with additional enhancements (for Magellan and other
  112.   programs) such as more screen sizes, choice of screen
  113.   fonts, and extensive color control.

  124. ■ Indexing and Viewing Corrupted Files
  125.  
  126.   There are some types of corrupted files that Magellan
  127.   may have difficulty indexing and/or displaying.  You can:
  128.  
  129.   * Repair or delete the corrupted file(s).
  130.   * Or, exclude the file(s) from your "Files on All Drives"
  131.     index filespec.
  132.  
  133. ■ Network Issues
  134.  
  135.   * When using the Verify (Ctrl-F7) command, always be sure
  136.     to map your network drives to the same logical drive.
  137.     This is because Magellan includes the drive letter with
  138.     the path when files are verified.
  139.  
  140.   * If you are working on a Novell or Banyan Vines network, 
  141.     you must always specify a complete path, including drive 
  142.     letter, whenever one is needed (also during Install).

  148. ■ The Terminate-and-Stay-Resident Portion of Magellan
  149.  
  150.   The TSR portion of Magellan (MG /TSR) will work best 
  151.   if you run it after any software that appends drives
  152.   to your system, for example, network software or RAM 
  153.   disk software.

  174.   The Explorer's Guide, pages 14 and 16, states that you
  175.   need 256K in order to install and run Magellan.  The 
  176.   correct number is 330K.

  178. ■ Magellan Keywords

  180.   The table on pages 182-183 of the Explorer's Guide omits
  181.   one Magellan keyword: {EmbedFile}.  This stands for the
  182.   contents of a compressed (zipped) file and is valid only
  183.   when you attempt to activate Copy (F2) while viewing the
  184.   contents of such a file.

  198.   The documentation on Backup (Ctrl-F1) in the Explorer's
  199.   Guide, pages 92-97, should also mention that the Backup
  200.   command creates a file called MAGBACK.NXT on the target
  201.   diskette in order to indicate that another diskette in
  202.   the backup series will follow.  This is a zero byte file
  203.   that should not be erased as long as the diskette is to
  204.   be part of the backup series.

  206. ■ The Restore Command

  208.   The documentation note on Restore (Ctrl-F2) in the
  209.   Explorer's Guide, page 259, should state that the Restore
  210.   command will prompt you for each diskette in the backup
  211.   series, so there is no need to run Restore for each
  212.   individual diskette.

  222.   The Explorer's Guide, pages 163-165, should mention that
  223.   you cannot use FIND mode when searching for text in PIC,
  224.   DRW, PCX, or GIF files, because the screen is displaying
  225.   text in graphics, rather than character, mode.

  229.   In the Idea Book, page 30, the entry next to "Command"
  230.   in the table should read "123" instead of "123R3".

  241.         Special Notes for International Users (1):

  244. ■ Accented Characters in Searching:  If you run Code Page
  245.   437 and search for accented characters, you may notice
  246.   some unexpected results.  Magellan's searching
  247.   functionality (the Explore command and FIND mode) mirrors
  248.   the operating system's casing rules, and these vary
  249.   between code pages producing slightly different results.
  250.   
  251.   Searching is usually accent insensitive.  This means that
  252.   Magellan finds any accented or unaccented versions of the
  253.   letter.  When you run code page 437, the exceptions are:
  254.   A umlaut, A ring, C cedilla, and E acute.  Like DOS,
  255.   Magellan treats these characters as accent sensitive, so
  256.   type the letter with its accent, or use Compose (Alt-F1),
  257.   when you search for one of these characters.
  258.   
  259.   You can modify MAGELLAN.SYM to override Magellan's
  260.   matching and make all characters accent sensitive.  Then
  261.   searches will find only the same accented character.  (See
  262.   the file MAGELLAN.SYM for details on modifying it.)

  265.         Special Notes for International Users (2):
  266.         ──────────────────────────────────────────

  268. ■ In addition to Code Page 850, the Compose (Alt-F1) command
  269.   also supports Code Pages 437, 860, 863 and 865.
  270.  
  271. ■ For any character that is not supported by your code page,
  272.   Magellan will beep.  Fallback or substitute characters for
  273.   display purposes are not used.
  274.  
  275. ■ Menu Keys:  In addition to the slash (/) key, the < key
  276.   also activates the Magellan Function Key Map.
  277.  
  278. ■ DOS COUNTRY= command:  Magellan uses the COUNTRY= command
  279.   in your CONFIG.SYS file to determine your country settings.
  280.   This is used to set Magellan's default date format and the
  281.   currency symbol displayed in currency formatted cells of
  282.   Lotus 1-2-3 and Lotus Symphony spreadsheets.
