-
- Startup Notes:
- ──────────────
-
- When you start Magellan for the first time, you will see
- a brief "tour" to help you get going. You will be given
- the opportunity to skip the tour, retain the tour to
- run at a later time, or deactivate the tour.
-
- The introductory tour was created entirely using the new
- Magellan macro features that allow you to create your
- own customized message and dialog boxes.

-
-
- General Notes (1):
- ──────────────────
-
- ■ More Viewers
-
- Graphics viewers for PCX and GIF files are included.
-
- ■ Notes on Graphics Viewers (PIC, DRW, PCX and GIF)
-
- * You can view these graphics files only if you have an
- EGA or VGA configuration, in 80 column by 25, 43 or
- 50 line mode. If you have a Mono, Hercules, CGA or
- MCGA configuration, graphics files will be displayed
- using the Generic Text Viewer.
-
- * You can interrupt the drawing of a graphics file by
- pressing any key. "Key pressed" will appear in the View
- Window, and the effect of the key will be carried out.
-
- * Sample files can be found in the MGSAMPLE and MGDEMO
- subdirectories created by Magellan during installation.
-
-
- General Notes (2):
- ──────────────────
-
- ■ The Merge Utility
-
- * You may end up with duplicate entries in your merged
- dialog boxes. If so, use Delete (F3) to remove any
- duplicates.
-
- * If you reassign function keys, your Version 1 macros
- may need to have function key keywords translated to
- Version 2 keywords. For example, if you used {F2} in
- a Version 1 macro and you have reassigned the F2 key
- in Version 2, you should change {F2} to {Copy} in any
- Version 2 macros.
-
- * If you are a Version 1 user, we recommend that you
- re-index from scratch in order to take full advantage
- of new viewers and enhanced speed. If you choose to
- convert your Version 1 index setups using Merge, you
- will then also need to copy any old *.IX1 files from
- your old Magellan program directory to your new one.
-
-
- General Notes (3):
- ──────────────────
-
- ■ Special VGA Video Option
-
- If you have a VGA configuration (not plasma or LCD laptop),
- you can run MG94 instead of MG to load Magellan in a
- high-resolution 94x36 text mode. MG94 is a subset of
- UltraVision by Personics. To run it, type the following
- at the DOS prompt from your Magellan program directory:
-
- MG94 <─┘
-
- The full UltraVision product provides VGA and EGA systems
- with additional enhancements (for Magellan and other
- programs) such as more screen sizes, choice of screen
- fonts, and extensive color control.
-
- For more information about UltraVision, contact:
- Personics Corporation, 63 Great Road, Maynard, MA 01754
- Telephone (508) 897-1575, FAX (508) 897-1947
- CompuServe: GO PCVENB

-
- General Notes (4):
- ──────────────────
-
- ■ Indexing and Viewing Corrupted Files
-
- There are some types of corrupted files that Magellan
- may have difficulty indexing and/or displaying. You can:
-
- * Repair or delete the corrupted file(s).
- * Or, exclude the file(s) from your "Files on All Drives"
- index filespec.
-
- ■ Network Issues
-
- * When using the Verify (Ctrl-F7) command, always be sure
- to map your network drives to the same logical drive.
- This is because Magellan includes the drive letter with
- the path when files are verified.
-
- * If you are working on a Novell or Banyan Vines network,
- you must always specify a complete path, including drive
- letter, whenever one is needed (also during Install).
-
-
- General Notes (5):
- ──────────────────
-
- ■ The Terminate-and-Stay-Resident Portion of Magellan
-
- The TSR portion of Magellan (MG /TSR) will work best
- if you run it after any software that appends drives
- to your system, for example, network software or RAM
- disk software.

- Documentation Notes (1):
- ────────────────────────
-
- ■ Installing and Running Magellan
-
- The Explorer's Guide, pages 14 and 16, states that you
- need 256K in order to install and run Magellan. The
- correct number is 330K.
-
- ■ Magellan Keywords
-
- The table on pages 182-183 of the Explorer's Guide omits
- one Magellan keyword: {EmbedFile}. This stands for the
- contents of a compressed (zipped) file and is valid only
- when you attempt to activate Copy (F2) while viewing the
- contents of such a file.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Documentation Notes (2):
- ────────────────────────
-
- ■ The Backup Command
-
- The documentation on Backup (Ctrl-F1) in the Explorer's
- Guide, pages 92-97, should also mention that the Backup
- command creates a file called MAGBACK.NXT on the target
- diskette in order to indicate that another diskette in
- the backup series will follow. This is a zero byte file
- that should not be erased as long as the diskette is to
- be part of the backup series.
-
- ■ The Restore Command
-
- The documentation note on Restore (Ctrl-F2) in the
- Explorer's Guide, page 259, should state that the Restore
- command will prompt you for each diskette in the backup
- series, so there is no need to run Restore for each
- individual diskette.
-
-
-
-
- Documentation Notes (3):
- ────────────────────────
-
- ■ FIND Mode
-
- The Explorer's Guide, pages 163-165, should mention that
- you cannot use FIND mode when searching for text in PIC,
- DRW, PCX, or GIF files, because the screen is displaying
- text in graphics, rather than character, mode.
-
- ■ Multiple Worksheet Consolidation
-
- In the Idea Book, page 30, the entry next to "Command"
- in the table should read "123" instead of "123R3".
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Special Notes for International Users (1):
- ──────────────────────────────────────────
-
- ■ Accented Characters in Searching: If you run Code Page
- 437 and search for accented characters, you may notice
- some unexpected results. Magellan's searching
- functionality (the Explore command and FIND mode) mirrors
- the operating system's casing rules, and these vary
- between code pages producing slightly different results.
-
- Searching is usually accent insensitive. This means that
- Magellan finds any accented or unaccented versions of the
- letter. When you run code page 437, the exceptions are:
- A umlaut, A ring, C cedilla, and E acute. Like DOS,
- Magellan treats these characters as accent sensitive, so
- type the letter with its accent, or use Compose (Alt-F1),
- when you search for one of these characters.
-
- You can modify MAGELLAN.SYM to override Magellan's
- matching and make all characters accent sensitive. Then
- searches will find only the same accented character. (See
- the file MAGELLAN.SYM for details on modifying it.)
-
-
- Special Notes for International Users (2):
- ──────────────────────────────────────────
-
- ■ In addition to Code Page 850, the Compose (Alt-F1) command
- also supports Code Pages 437, 860, 863 and 865.
-
- ■ For any character that is not supported by your code page,
- Magellan will beep. Fallback or substitute characters for
- display purposes are not used.
-
- ■ Menu Keys: In addition to the slash (/) key, the < key
- also activates the Magellan Function Key Map.
-
- ■ DOS COUNTRY= command: Magellan uses the COUNTRY= command
- in your CONFIG.SYS file to determine your country settings.
- This is used to set Magellan's default date format and the
- currency symbol displayed in currency formatted cells of
- Lotus 1-2-3 and Lotus Symphony spreadsheets.
-
-
- ───────────────────
- End of readme file.
