- INFORMATION ABOUT THIS UPDATE
-
- Compatibility with full versions of Microsoft Windows
- -----------------------------------------------------
- Microsoft Excel 2.1d is designed to take full advantage of all
- versions of Microsoft Windows 2.03 and higher. This version of
- Microsoft Excel is compatible with the Intel 80286 and 80386
- architecture which insures complete compatibility with future
- versions of Windows as well.
-
- A full version of Microsoft Windows is required
- -----------------------------------------------
- This set of Microsoft Excel disks does NOT contain a run-time
- version if Microsoft Windows. You must have a full version of
- Microsoft Windows/286 or Microsoft Windows/386, version 2.03 or
- higher.
-
- Updating an existing version of Microsoft Excel for Windows
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- SETUP will search all first level directories on the
- specified hard disk for an existing version of Microsoft
- Excel for Windows.
-
- - If an existing copy of Microsoft Excel is found, SETUP will
- propose to update it by copying the Microsoft Excel 2.1d files
- into that directory. For simplicity, it's recommended you
- accept the proposed directory which contains the previous
- version of Microsoft Excel.
-
- - If an existing copy of Microsoft Excel is not found, SETUP
- will warn you that an existing copy is not found and propose
- a directory called EXCEL. For simplicity, it's recommended
- that you follow the instructions provided in SETUP to change
- the drive and/or directory to where an existing version of
- Microsoft Excel is located. This is done so your previous
- version of Microsoft Excel can be properly updated.
-
- NOTE: These Microsoft Excel 2.1d disks contain all files needed
- to use Microsoft Excel with a full version of Windows. You
- need not install or find your previous version of Microsoft
- Excel to properly install Microsoft Excel 2.1d.
-
- Starting Microsoft Excel automatically from the command line
- ------------------------------------------------------------
- If you want to run Microsoft Excel 2.1d automatically when you
- start Microsoft Windows, type WIN EXCEL at the DOS command prompt.
-
- Note: If you have Microsoft Windows/386 version 2.03, 2.10, or 2.11
- type WIN386 EXCEL at the DOS command prompt.

- COMPRESSED FILES
-
- Most of the Microsoft Excel files are now in a compressed form to save
- disk space. SETUP will automatically decompress files for you when you
- run SETUP. However, if for some reason you need to manually decompress
- a file, we've provided a program called DECOMP.EXE on the SETUP DISK
- which will decompress files for you.
-
- Compressed files are identified with a special file name extension of
- the form *.CP? where "*" is the file name and "?" is a letter used to
- indicate the file name extension for the decompressed version of the
- file. The table below shows you the encoded file name extensions for
- compressed files and what the corresponding decompressed file name
- extension should be.
-
- Extension Corresponding
- for a Extension for an
- Compressed Decompressed
- file file
- ---------- -----------
- .CPE .EXE
- .CPT .CBT
- .CPH .HLP
- .CP1 .1
- .CP2 .2
- .CPC .XLC
- .CPM .XLM
- .CPS .XLS
- .CPW .XLW
- .CPF .FON
- .CPV .DRV
-
- To copy and decompress a file manually:
-
- 1. Copy the program DECOMP.EXE from the Microsoft Excel SETUP disk
- to the Microsoft Excel directory on your hard disk.
- 2. Use the DECOMP program to copy the compressed file from the Microsoft
- Excel disk to your hard disk using the decompressed name. DECOMP.EXE
- will decompress the file and give it the correct file name extension.
-
- DECOMP [file_name] [destination]
-
- Where "file_name" is the name of the compressed file and "destination"
- is where you want the decompressed file placed.
-
- For example: If you wanted to decompress EXCEL.CPE (The Excel
- program file) which is on a disk in drive A:, you
- would type the following at the DOS prompt:
-
- DECOMP a:\EXCEL.CPE C:\WINDOWS
-
- and press the ENTER key.
-
- If you experience trouble manually decompressing files, we strongly
- recommend that you run the SETUP program from the SETUP disk and
- have it done automatically for you.

- The following table lists all files on the disks in the Microsoft Excel
- package. Files are grouped by function. File distribution is different

- the compressed file name extensions are shown below.
