  17. INFORMATION ABOUT THIS UPDATE
  18.  
  19. Compatibility with full versions of Microsoft Windows
  20. -----------------------------------------------------
  21.   Microsoft Excel 2.1d is designed to take full advantage of all 
  22.   versions of Microsoft Windows 2.03 and higher.  This version of 
  23.   Microsoft Excel is compatible with the Intel 80286 and 80386 
  24.   architecture which insures complete compatibility with future 
  25.   versions of Windows as well.

  27. A full version of Microsoft Windows is required
  28. -----------------------------------------------
  29. This set of Microsoft Excel disks does NOT contain a run-time 
  30. version if Microsoft Windows.  You must have a full version of 
  31. Microsoft Windows/286 or Microsoft Windows/386, version 2.03 or
  32. higher.

  34. Updating an existing version of Microsoft Excel for Windows
  35. -----------------------------------------------------------
  36.   SETUP will search all first level directories on the 
  37.   specified hard disk for an existing version of Microsoft
  38.   Excel for Windows.
  39.  
  40.   - If an existing copy of Microsoft Excel is found, SETUP will 
  41.     propose to update it by copying the Microsoft Excel 2.1d files 
  42.     into that directory.  For simplicity, it's recommended you 
  43.     accept the proposed directory which contains the previous
  44.     version of Microsoft Excel.
  45.  
  46.   - If an existing copy of Microsoft Excel is not found, SETUP
  47.     will warn you that an existing copy is not found and propose
  48.     a directory called EXCEL.  For simplicity, it's recommended
  49.     that you follow the instructions provided in SETUP to change 
  50.     the drive and/or directory to where an existing version of
  51.     Microsoft Excel is located.  This is done so your previous 
  52.     version of Microsoft Excel can be properly updated.  
  53.  
  54. NOTE: These Microsoft Excel 2.1d disks contain all files needed
  55.       to use Microsoft Excel with a full version of Windows.  You
  56.       need not install or find your previous version of Microsoft 
  57.       Excel to properly install Microsoft Excel 2.1d.

  59. Starting Microsoft Excel automatically from the command line
  60. ------------------------------------------------------------
  61. If you want to run Microsoft Excel 2.1d automatically when you 
  62. start Microsoft Windows, type WIN EXCEL at the DOS command prompt.
  63.  
  64. Note: If you have Microsoft Windows/386 version 2.03, 2.10, or 2.11
  65.       type WIN386 EXCEL at the DOS command prompt.

  89. COMPRESSED FILES
  90.  
  91. Most of the Microsoft Excel files are now in a compressed form to save
  92. disk space. SETUP will automatically decompress files for you when you
  93. run SETUP. However, if for some reason you need to manually decompress
  94. a file, we've provided a program called DECOMP.EXE on the SETUP DISK
  95. which will decompress files for you.
  96.  
  97. Compressed files are identified with a special file name extension of
  98. the form *.CP? where "*" is the file name and "?" is a letter used to
  99. indicate the file name extension for the decompressed version of the
  100. file. The table below shows you the encoded file name extensions for
  101. compressed files and what the corresponding decompressed file name
  102. extension should be.

  121. To copy and decompress a file manually:
  122.  
  123. 1. Copy the program DECOMP.EXE from the Microsoft Excel SETUP disk
  124.    to the Microsoft Excel directory on your hard disk.
  125. 2. Use the DECOMP program to copy the compressed file from the Microsoft
  126.    Excel disk to your hard disk using the decompressed name. DECOMP.EXE
  127.    will decompress the file and give it the correct file name extension.

  129.    DECOMP [file_name] [destination]
  130.  
  131.    Where "file_name" is the name of the compressed file and "destination"
  132.    is where you want the decompressed file placed.
  133.  
  134.    For example:  If you wanted to decompress EXCEL.CPE (The Excel
  135.                  program file) which is on a disk in drive A:, you
  136.                  would type the following at the DOS prompt:
  137.                 
  138.                  DECOMP a:\EXCEL.CPE C:\WINDOWS
  139.  
  140.                  and press the ENTER key.
  141.  
  142. If you experience trouble manually decompressing files, we strongly
  143. recommend that you run the SETUP program from the SETUP disk and
  144. have it done automatically for you.
