-
- Getting Started page 2-3
- Add "BKCOLOR.EXE" to the list of program files.
-
- Restore page 4-10
- In the "Prompt for each Volume" section, add a new second
- paragraph:
- When restoring a backup set that includes multiple
- volumes that will be redirected to new destinations,
- the "Prompting Level" parameter will automatically
- default to "Prompt for each Volume".
-
- Restore page 4-13
- Add the following new paragraphs at the top of the page,
- before "As each file is ....":
- Press F2 at any time to interrupt the restore and
- display the "Restore Options" screen. After making
- any necessary option changes, press F2 and the
- restore will continue.
-
- If you are restoring a backup set that includes
- multiple volumes and you need to change the restore
- destination, Back-It 4 will automatically prompt
- you for each volume (see Prompt for Each Volume,
- page 4-10).
-
- To redirect subsequent volumes each to a new or the
- same destination, press F2 when the system prompts
- you with the message, "Restore this volume? (Y/N).".
- This will display the "Restore Options" screen and
- permit you to change the current "Destination".
- When your changes are completed, press F2 again to
- resume the restore.
-
- Configure page 5-8
- Add this sentence to the end of the paragraph:
- All backups to a DOS Device must be done to preformatted
- media.
-
- Index page I-5
- Change the first "Environment Variables" page reference to
- "2-5, G-3" instead of "5-12, G-3".

- │ THE BKSETUP PROGRAM │
- └─────────────────────┘
-
- To properly install Back-It 4 onto your computer's hard drive,
- you must run the BKSETUP program. To do so, make your floppy
- drive the current drive. Then, put the Back-It 4 floppy diskette
- into your floppy drive and run BKSETUP.
-
- For example, if you are using drive A to install Back-It 4 onto
- your hard disk, do the following:
-
- 1. Type A: and press ENTER. This makes drive A the
- default drive.
-
- 2. Now, type BKSETUP and press ENTER. This runs the
- installation program. From this point on, follow the
- simple instructions displayed on your screen.
-
-
- ┌────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ TESTING BACK-IT 4 ON YOUR COMPUTER │
- └────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- Before you can run Back-It 4 on your computer, you must first
- test your computer's DMA controller chip. When you use the
- BKSETUP program to install Back-It 4, it will automatically test
- the DMA chip. If you do not use BKSETUP to install Back-It, you
- should run DMATEST yourself to insure that Back-It can reliably run
- at its highest speed on your computer.
-
- In some cases, using DMATEST will cause your computer to "freeze."
- This is a result of a DMA controller which cannot support the
- normal "FAST" speeds used in Back-It 4. If your computer freezes
- during the test, you must set Back-It 4's DMA speed to "SLOW".
-
-
- ┌─────────────────┐
- │ NETWORK SUPPORT │
- └─────────────────┘
-
- Back-It 4 will backup files from any network that supports
- standard DOS commands. Some networks, such as Novell's Netware
- 2.xx, have special files and trustee rights and information that
- should be saved with the backup -- Back-It 4 will not save this
- special information, but will be able to backup all other files
- on most networks.
-
- Back-It 4 LAN, the network-specific Back-It, WILL backup the
- special files created by Netware. Call Gazelle Systems for more
- information.
-
-
- ┌───────────────┐
- │ FLOPPY DRIVES │
- └───────────────┘
-
- Back-It 4 supports all standard 5.25" formats (360K and 1.2MB)
- and all standard 3.5" formats (720K and 1.44MB). If you happen
- to have a floppy-drive that Back-It does not seem to work with,
- please call our office.
-
- Please be sure to return your filled-out registration card; we
- will then let you know when a newer version of Back-It 4 is
- available that will support the newer 2.88MB floppy drives that
- will begin to be available in 1990.
-
-
- ┌───────────────┐
- │ FLOPPY ERRORS │
- └───────────────┘
-
- Back-It 4 may report certain errors that simply mean it has
- not been completely configured for your computer. If you get an
- error message that doesn't seem to go away, check the following
- items first before calling our office:
-
- - Make sure your floppy disk configuration is properly
- set for the drives you are using.
-
- - Use only new, high-quality, high-density diskettes
- for high-density 1.2MB or 1.44MB drives. The "cheap"
- diskettes can't physically hold the amount of data
- that the drive puts on the diskettes.
-
- - Don't use diskettes that you know to be damaged. If
- you are not sure about your diskettes, then ALWAYS USE
- ADVANCED ERROR CORRECTION and use either NORMAL or
- SUPER verification (this allows Back-It to catch and
- screen out the damaged portions).
-
-
- You may have one of the following problems, all of which can be
- easily overcome:
-
- 1) Back-It 4 thinks a formatted disk is not formatted:
-
- If, when using the "Restore" command, Back-It 4 says that the
- diskette you inserted in the drive may not be formatted -- and
- you know that it is -- then go back to the "Configure Floppy"
- command and make sure that both the drive type and format size
- are correct for the diskette in question. It is common on AT's
- with 1.2MB drives to configure the drive as a 1.2MB format but
- then to try restoring from a 360K diskette. In this case, change
- the format size to 360K.
-
- 2) You get the "BAD TRACK 0" message even on new disks:
-
- This message can appear in the "Backup" or "Restore" commands.
- Before throwing away the offending diskette (or Back-It!),
- recheck your floppy drive configurations (as above). And, if the
- problem persists, you may wish to put Back-It in the
- "Compatibility" mode with the "Configure Other" command.
-
- 3) A diskette used on one computer won't work on another:
-
- This, unfortunately, is a hardware (and sometimes a DOS) problem.
- We have found that not all 1.2MB drives are alike; and, 360K
- diskettes formatted in a 1.2MB drive may not be readable in some
- 360K drives.
-
- If you need to backup to 360K disks in 1.2MB drives (because you
- plan to restore the files on another computer that has only 360K
- drives, for example), use diskettes that have been preformatted
- by 360K drives if possible. This will help reduce the incompati-
- bility problems associated with the differing drive types. And,
- ALWAYS USE ADVANCED ERROR CORRECTION when backing up to the lower-
- density diskettes.
-
- 4) These are the approximate times that Back-It 4 requires to fill
- standard floppy diskettes with the Verify Option set to "off":
- 360K - 17.5 seconds; 720K - 33 seconds;1.2MB - 28 seconds;
- 1.44MB - 33 seconds. If your computer takes longer to fill diskettes
- during backup, you may consider the following:
-
- Slower times are normal if you are backing up lots of small files,
- or if the files on your disk are fragmented (i.e., the sectors
- comprising your files are scattered over the disk instead of
- being contiguous for each file). If this is the case, Back-It
- will very quickly resume its normal high speed when it gets to
- larger files. (We recommend that you periodically use OPTune to
- defragment and optimize your hard disks.)
-
- We have noticed that many computers, either due to the specific
- version of DOS or due to the floppy BIOS, do not format diskettes
- efficiently. You will notice that Back-It 4 will operate slower
- on diskettes formatted with the DOS "FORMAT" command, but will speed
- up considerably when you use diskettes that Back-It 4 formatted
- itself.
-
- If this is the case, you may wish to reformat all your floppies
- with GZFORMAT, our format "TSR" program that can be used at any time.
- This program will produce safer formatted diskettes than DOS --
- and will do it quicker and with less fuss. These diskettes are 100%
- compatible for all DOS purposes. The ONLY differences are that
- more bad sectors are screened out (whereas DOS will let marginal
- sectors pass) and the floppies will allow Back-It 4 to operate at
- the highest speed possible.)
