Before calling our Product Support department, please check your Windows manual as well as your PFS:WindowWorks User's Guide.
For this release of PFS:WindowWorks, the following two features are documented but have not been implemented. You can import
PFS: and BetterWorking word processor files
, but you can not export files in this format. You can not directly import an Eight-in-One .TPL (spreadsheet) file. The
Keep TIFF File with Document
option does not appear on the New Picture dialog box.
When using any Windows 3.0 software application, it's a good idea to regularly save your work. Microsoft suggests that "if you get the message '
Unrecoverable Application Error
' you should close your applications, exit Windows, and reboot your system. This error means that memory may have been corrupted, so it's important to reboot." If the application in which you are working noticeably slows down, it is a good idea to save your work, exit all the way to DOS and re-enter Windows.
User's Guide updates:
* On page 10-41 of the User's Guide, it is stated that
paragraph spacing
is measured in lines. Spacing is actually measured in point size. The limits are zero to 127 points.
* Page 11-33 states that the formula
DATE(yy,mm,dd)
returns the entered date as a Julian date. It returns the date in the selected date format (i.e. 3-1-91).
* There are two spreadsheet functions which were not documented in the WindowWorks User's Guide. To "
stamp
" the current date or time on your printed spreadsheet, use the formulas =PRNDATE and =PRNTIME.
* The
SIN and COS functions
on page 13-50 are measured in radians rather than degrees.
* The
negate function
on page 13-50 is not allowed. Instead, use -(field).
* Please note that when using the
AT function
on page 13-52, if is is used in a criteria block when defining a report, this function must be the last in the list.
* The example on page 13-53 of the Reference Guide indicates that the
date function
should return the value 29. It actually returns the value 30.
User Hints:
* PFS:WindowWorks comes with several different
program icons
. To browse through the selections, follow these steps:
Go out to the Windows Program Manager.0
Make sure the WindowWorks icon is highlighted.,
Choose "Properties..." from the File menu.
Select "Change Icon...".;
Select "View Next" to browse through the available icons.E
Select "OK" to accept the icon you want to use for PFS:WindowWorks.
* Windows remembers the last drive and
directory that you save to or open from
. When saving files, pay attention to the directory to which you save so you can find the file later.
* If WindowWorks gives a message that your document has been printed but has not yet come out of your printer, check the
Windows Print Manager
. It may still be in the queue. You may have to choose "Resume" in the Print Manager if the print run is stalled.
* The
Windows Print Manager
sometimes loses the last few lines of text. If you notice some text is missing, insert a few carriage returns at the end of the document and reprint the last page.
* If you are entering a lot of text into a document with pasted graphics or hot linked objects, you will get much more speed if you enter the text in
Continuous
rather than Page view.
* Not all printer drivers will warn you that your
page and printer orientations
do not match. If, for example, you have changed the printer setup orientation to landscape while in the spreadsheet, when you print out a word processor document which has been set up for portrait remember to check both the page setup and printer setup orientations and make sure that they are both set to the same orientation.
* When
printing legal-sized envelopes
, remember to switch the printer orientation to landscape.
* Header and footer text and pictures from
Word Publisher 5.0 documents
can not be imported into WindowWorks. They can be easily re-inserted however, using the Chapter command under the Text menu, and the New Picture command under the Object menu. Also, Word Publisher outlines are not supported by WindowWorks.
* WindowWorks is a WYSIWYG application, however, there may be a slight discrepancy between what you see on the screen and what is printed due to hardware limitations. The resolution for most printers is 300 dpi (dots per inch). VGA screen resolution is 72 dpi.
Text frames
within a document are considered separate "mini documents". When you attempt to
spell check
your entire document be aware that this won't include any text frames placed on the page. The text frames must be spell checked individually. Footnotes, headers, and footers must also be spell checked individually.
Be careful when deleting rows or columns in the spreadsheet
. Although you can undelete if you make a mistake, you may have to rebuild some formulas which refer to the deleted/undeleted cells in your worksheet.
* To enter
numbers as labels (i.e. text strings) in the spreadsheet
, precede the entry with a quotation mark. For example, to enter the ZIP code '02139' as a text string so that the leading zero is not ignored, type "02139 into the cell.
* To get the
maximum printable area with page numbers in a spreadsheet
, set the margins in the Page Setup dialog box to .75 inch or larger. To print the maximum area without page numbers, set the margins to .25 inch.
* An undocumented feature is to
print a one-page range in a spreadsheet
by marking the range and choosing Print... from the File menu. If you mark more than one page of output, it will not print out correctly. Use the following table to guide you in marking ranges to print (in landscape mode):
Row Height
Maximum number of rows
8 50
10 40
13 40
15 29
18 24
* Pressing <Enter> in the
Chart Editor data entry
screen does not "accept" the dialog box. You must click OK with the mouse, or press <Alt>O.
* Be careful when
removing records in a database and then altering the database definition
. The removed records will be purged when you alter the definition and cannot be recovered.
* The
Report Title definition box
in the Database does not accept carriage returns or tabs. You must use the word wrap feature to move to the second line of a title.
* When
searching for records
in the database, the search occurs only for records after the current record number (regardless of any user-defined index).
Find Record
uses only record number as an index. If you want to search your entire database, you must start at the first record. Simply click the first record button on the control strip to move to that record.
* The
Label Maker
was designed to directly merge Address Book records. But it's just as easy to
merge records from a database
if the database is set up with the following field names:
