- Addendum Milliken Storyteller
- Enhanced Sound Release
-
- The latest version of the Milliken Storyteller now provides support for
- ALL major IBM compatible sound boards capable of digitized speech. This
- release also provides full digitized sound support for those machines
- that have NO EXTRA SOUND HARDWARE, by using the internal IBM speaker to
- generate speech. At a glance here is a list of the sound support
- provided by this release of the Milliken Storyteller:
-
- 1. Internal IBM speaker, no extra hardware required.
- 2. Covox Speech Thing
- 3. Covox Voice Master.
- 4. Covox Sound Master.
- 5. Creative Labs, Sound Blaster.
- 6. Adlib Personal Music System.
- 7. Tandy 1000 EX/TX/SX/HX internal sound chip.
- 8. Tandy 1000 SL/TL internal sound chip.
-
- Before you run the Millken Storyteller you should insert the program
- disk into your disk drive, then type 'A:' and enter (or the letter for
- the drive you have inserted the disk into), and then type 'INSTALL' and
- press enter. You will first be asked to select the graphics mode you
- wish to run the Milliken Storyteller in. The best available graphics
- are VGA/MCGA which provides true 256 color graphics support and draws
- upon the full 256,000 color palette available. The next best is Tandy
- 16 color and EGA graphics, then CGA, and lastly Hercules monochrome. A
- great deal of effort was made to make the stunning artwork in the
- Milliken Storyteller look superb in all available IBM graphics modes.
- You may re-run the install program anytime you wish to select different
- graphics or sound capabilities on your machine.
-
- After selecting the graphics capabilities of your machine you will then
- be asked to choose the sound support you wish. You will be allowed to
- choose from the list of audio support you see above. The following are
- some notes about each of the different sound systems you might own:
-
- A) Internal IBM speaker. (Quality good, 6 bit, volume low)
-
- The Milliken Storyteller uses a unique method to achieve high quality
- digitized sound from the standard internal IBM speaker. However,
- since the speaker inside the IBM has rarely been used to make more
- than simple beeping sounds, manufacturers have often provided very
- poor quality speakers, positioned ineffectively, and with no volume
- control. For this reason you may find that the sound coming out of
- your computer may not be very loud. This could be caused by where the
- speaker is positioned, the kind of case on your machine, and the
- loudness of the computer's cooling fan. We have found that computers
- with plastic cases and/or those with a volume control have the best
- quality and loudest sound, machines like the Tandy 1000 line or the
- IBM/PS2 series. If the sound from your computer's speaker is not
- loud enough we recommend that you purchase one of audio systems
- listed above which are supported by the Milliken Storyteller.
- Milliken will also be able to sell you a Covox Speech Thing for
- $24.95 if you fill out and send in the enclosed coupon. The Covox
- Speech Thing attaches to the parallel port on the back of your
- computer and does not require that you plug any board into your
- machine. It comes with a speaker amplifier that has a volume
- control. Note: Using the internal IBM speaker disables the
- 'underlining' feature of the Milliken Storyteller.
-
- B) Covox Speech Thing (Quality high, 8 bit)
- Covox Voice Master (Quality high, 8 bit)
- Covox Sound Master (Quality high, 8 bit)
-
- Covox has been providing a diverse line of enhanced audio products
- for a number of years. The Covox Speech Thing is an inexpensive
- method of getting true digitized sound out of your IBM compatible
- computer without having to plug any boards into your machine. When
- selecting either the Covox Voice Master or the Covox Sound Master the
- sound board needs to have been installed in your machine with the
- default factory settings.
-
- C) Creative Labs, Sound Blaster (Quality high, 8 bit)
-
- The Creative Labs Sound Blaster is one of the most advanced audio
- systems available for IBM compatibles. To use it with the Milliken
- Storyteller it must have been installed with the factory default
- settings. The Sound Blaster is also compatible with the Adlib
- Personal Music System.
-
- D) Adlib Personal Music System (Quality good, 6 bit)
-
- The Adlib Personal Music System is probably the most popular add-on
- sound board for IBM compatible computer systems. The Adlib board was
- not designed to do digitized sound and the quality is not as great as
- one of the other add-on audio systems but is still good. Your Adlib
- must have been installed with the factory default settings.
-
- E) Tandy EX/TX/SX/HX internal sound chip. (Quality fair, 4 bit)
-
- These earlier models of the Tandy 1000 line have an interal
- sound chip that is capable of doing limited quality digitized
- sound. If you have one of the other sound boards you should
- select it. You also might want to try the internal IBM speaker
- support and compare to see which you like better. Choosing
- the Tandy sound chip support will give you the underlining and
- animation capabilities which are disabled when using the
- internal IBM speaker.
-
- F) Tandy SL/TL internal sound chip. (Quality high, 8 bit)
-
- The new Tandy 1000 SL/TL machines have greatly enhanced audio
- capabilities which are supported by the Millken Storyteller.
-
- PLEASE NOTE:
-
- Because of the large amount of human speech placed into the Milliken
- Storyteller you might notice that the narrator sometimes speaks a little
- quickly. To give some control over this we have added a method of
- changing the speed at which the narrator tells the story. While using
- the storyteller you may press Control-S (hold down the control key and
- the S key at the same time), to change the speed at which the story is
- told. This will cause the tone of the narrators voice to change, but
- the speech will slow down by 20% and remain clear and understandable.
