- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1. Memory
-
- PrinTools 1.01 occupies over 60 Kbytes of memory. This amount was required
- to make the product easy to use without sacrificing any features. We intend
- to reduce this amount without eliminating features or user flexibility. Be
- sure to send us your registration card so that we can provide you with this
- reduced memory version as soon as it is available.
-
- PrinTools will load into high memory using QEMM.SYS from Quarterdeck. Blocks
- of high memory are at least 32 Kbytes. You need at least 96 Kbytes of
- contiguous high memory (3 blocks) to load PrinTools.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2. Display Adapters
-
- EGA and VGA Display Adapters
-
- When you pop up PrinTools while in graphics mode with an EGA or VGA display
- adapter, you may see faint lines on your screen after you exit PrinTools.
- These lines do not affect your program or your computer. Any function that
- refreshes or redraws the screen will remove them.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 3. Using 3rd Party Font Cartridges with the LaserJet III and IIID printers
-
- Some 3rd party cartridges that are supported by earlier LaserJets are not
- supported by the LaserJet III and IIID. To determine if a cartridge is
- supported, insert it into one of the slots, take the printer off line and
- press the "Print Fonts" button. If the cartridge typestyles appear in the
- printout, then that cartridge is supported by your printer.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 4. DeskJet and DeskJet PLUS printers
-
- DeskJet
-
- The DeskJet printer does not support landscape orientation. Do not select
- landscape orientation unless you own the Landscape cartridge and have it
- inserted into one of the cartridge slots.
-
-
- DeskJet and DeskJet PLUS
-
- PrinTools cannot detect if these printers are off-line, out of paper, etc.
- If the "On Line" light flashes or you get no output, investigate the
- connection with the computer, the paper tray, etc.
-
- Neither the DeskJet nor the DeskJet PLUS supports printing multiple copies
- from a single printout; therefore, the Copy Count command in the PT-Setup
- and PT-Screen menus does not function. You will always get one copy.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 5. PT-Setup
-
- Typestyles and Symbol Sets
-
- Whenever you select a typestyle, be sure to select a symbol set as well. If
- you leave a previously selected symbol set that is not available for the
- typestyle that you are using, your output may be formatted in a different
- typestyle than the one you selected.
-
-
- Line Draw Typestyle
-
- In order to use the Line Draw typestyle (available on some font cartridges),
- select it in both Typestyle and Symbol Set.
-
-
- How "Characters per inch" works
-
- With fixed-pitch typestyles, "Characters per inch" sets the spacing between
- all characters. With proportionally-spaced typestyles, it does not set the
- spacing between characters, only the size of the space character itself.
-
-
- How "Lines per page" works
-
- "Lines per page" sets the number of lines that can be printed between the top
- and bottom margins. When you change printers, paper size or orientation,
- this value reverts to a default. Change it as needed for the typestyle that
- you are using.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 6. PT-Screen
-
- Printing a graphics screen can take several minutes. In some circumstances,
- you can pop up PrinTools while the screen is being printed, spooled or
- captured. Wait until printing is complete or disk activity stops (indicating
- that spooling or capturing is complete) before popping up PrinTools.
-
- PT-Screen maps screen colors to gray shades on your printer. In some cases,
- two adjacent colors or shades on your screen will print in the same shade of
- gray. Try setting different colors or shades in your application.
-
- If PT-Plot is loaded, you must set it to Pass-Through in order for
- printscreens to work.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 7. PT-Spool
-
- When you select PT-Spool, it creates a hidden 525 Kbyte spool file in your
- PrinTools directory called SPOOLER.FIL. Make sure that you have at least
- this much disk space available before selecting PT-Spool. To delete this
- file, type "UNHIDE SPOOLER.FIL" from your PrinTools directory, then type
- "DEL SPOOLER.FIL".
-
- 525 Kbytes is large enough for most uses. However, if you find that spooling
- progresses rapidly for awhile (as evidenced by disk activity) and then bogs
- down, you may need a larger spool file. This is most likely to happen if you
- print high resolution graphics. We have a utility to change the size of the
- spool file. Contact us at the address on the package for more information.
-
- If you re-select PT-Spool, or if you change to PT-Capture or Pass-Through
- while there is data in the spool file, printing will halt immediately and the
- rest of the data in the spool file will be cleared.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 8. Compatibility with Other Programs
-
- AdvanceLink from Hewlett Packard
-
- AdvanceLink communications software from Hewlett-Packard re-programs the
- character set. When you pop up PrinTools, lines and borders will be
- displayed as characters. PrinTools will continue to function properly.
- You can work around this display problem by entering AdvanceLink's Help
- facility, which uses the standard character set, and pop up PrinTools.
-
-
- Framework III from Ashton-Tate
-
- Framework III periodically updates the video display. When you pop up
- PrinTools, the screen may degenerate and become unreadable. PrinTools will
- continue to function properly.
-
-
- Other Memory-Resident Popups
-
- While data is in the spooler and being printed, popping up other
- memory-resident programs may be delayed for several seconds. This is
- normal. Both PrinTools and the other popup will continue to function
- properly.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 9. PT-Plot

- Command Line Switches
-
- /HOTSCAN = scan_code
- /HOTFLAG = flag_code
- /TIMEOUT = delay_value

- /UNLOAD
-
-
- HOTSCAN and HOTFLAG

- PTPLOT /HOTFLAG=20 /HOTSCAN=37 Num Lock on <PrtScr>
-
- TIMEOUT
-
- To change the printer retry timeout value (the time PT-Plot will try to
- send data to a busy printer before it pops up a message) use the
- "/TIMEOUT" command line option.
-
- For example, to change the delay to 30 seconds, at the DOS prompt,
- type "PTPLOT /TIMEOUT = 60". The delay may be from 3 to 1800 seconds.
-
- Although a delay value of "0" is legal (it denotes NEVER time-out), we
- strongly recommend that you do not use "0". If you could not make the
- printer become ready, PT-Plot would wait forever forcing you to reboot
- your computer and possibly lose data.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 10. Using PT-Plot with PT-Capture or PT-Spool
-
- To use PT-Plot with PT-Capture or PT-Spool, you must set different Input
- Sources for each. Otherwise, PT-Capture or PT-Spool will bypass PT-Plot.
- Here is an example:
-
- Input Source Output Destination
- PT-Plot LPT3 LPT2
- PrinTools LPT2 LPT1
-
- Note that the Output Destination of PT-Plot matches the Input Source of
- PrinTools. The output goes to PT-Plot, then to PrinTools, then to LPT1.
-
- Set End of Job Detection to Manual in PT-Plot. When the application has
- finished sending the plot to PT-Plot, pop up PT-Plot and press F5 to end the
- job. Note that PrinTools' F5 "Page Eject" is disabled until you press F5
- "End Job" in PT-Plot.
