- ^
- HFORMSYS 1 1
- Designing a form specification.
-
-
-
- Use [F10] to get the forms menu.
-
- You must place at least one regular field on each page of the form.
-
- Use the [Alt] key in combination with the appropriate ASCII number to
- get any of the extended graphics characters on a form.
-
- You can place calculated fields on a form. Choose Field/Place/Calculated
- to place a calculated field on the form.
- ^
- HCKTBLVIEW 0 0
- Specify whether to use table view for the edit operation.
-
- If you choose to use a table view for the edit, the user will be able to
- modify the keyed fields. You may set rights to a field so that the user
- cannot view or change the values in a field, but the rights would be
- used for any operation performed on that table.
-
- If a form is used to display the information, the keyed fields can be
- hidden from the user or placed as display-only, so the user can see the
- values but not change them. Forms may be created for different operations,
- so you do not have to change the rights to the keyed fields.
- ^
- HDEFINESCREEN 1 1
- Designing help or splash screen.
-
- To place text on the screen, move the cursor to where you want the text to
- begin and type. The [Ins] key toggles between insert and overwrite mode.
- The [Del] and [Backspace] keys allow you to delete characters.
-
- Pressing [F10] will bring up a Menu with the following options:
-
- -- AREA, to move or erase an area from the screen.
-
- -- BORDER, to draw or erase borders or lines on the screen.
-
- -- DO-IT! (or [F2]), to save the screen you have designed.
-
- -- CANCEL, to leave the screen design system without saving the screen.
- ^
- HRTYPE 0 0
- Specify whether the report is to be tabular or free-form.
-
- Tabular reports present information in rows and columns -- much like the
- arrangement of records and fields in a Paradox table.
-
- Free-form reports allow you to place fields wherever you like on the page.
- They are useful for application selections such as mailing labels, check
- or invoice printing, and other similar output.
-
- For more information on reports, see Chapters 5-7 of the Paradox User's
- Guide.
- ^
- HROUTPUT 0 0
- Select the destination for the current report.
-
- PRINTER will send the current report to the user's printer. The script
- written by the Personal Programmer will automatically check to make sure
- that the user's printer is ready.
-
- SCREEN will send the current report to the user's screen.
-
- FILE will send the current report to a DOS file on the user's system. If
- you select this option, you will next be asked to specify the name of the
- file to which to send the report.
- ^
- HRFILE 0 0
- Select a name for the file to which you want the report sent.
-
- The file name you select may be any valid DOS file name, that is any
- combination of from 1 to 8 letters or numbers. The extension ".rpt" is
- automatically appended to the file name that you enter here. See your
- DOS manual for more on valid file names.
- ^
- HREPORTSYS 1 1
- Designing a report specification.
-
-
- Use the insert key [Ins] to toggle between insert and overwrite modes.
-
- Use [F10] to get the report menu.
-
- Use [Ctrl][Y] to delete a line.
-
- Text typed in the top page band becomes the page header for each page of
- the report.
-
- Text typed in the bottom page band becomes the page footer for each page
- of the report.
-
- Right, top, and bottom margins are controlled by putting space at the
- right of the page, in the page header, and page footer, respectively.
- ^
- HSPLASH 0 0
- Specify whether you want to include a splash screen with the application.
-
- A splash screen is a title screen displayed to users when they start
- the application.
-
- SPLASHSCREEN indicates that you want to design a splash screen for the
- application.
-
- NOSPLASHSCREEN indicates that you do not want to include a title screen
- with this application.
- ^
- HSMODIFY 0 0
- Indicate the type of modification you want to make to the splash screen.
-
- DESIGN allows you to create a new splash screen. If a splash screen already
- exists, it will be replaced.
-
- MODIFY allows you to make changes to an existing splash screen.
-
- NOSPLASHSCREEN allows you to discard an existing splash screen.
-
- If you design a splash screen, it will appear each time the user starts
- the application.
- ^
- HSRCMAPENTER 0 0
- Enter the names of the source and map tables.
-
- To borrow a multitable view by name, you must specify the name of a source
- and map table to use for the view. The source and map tables you are
- borrowing must be present in the current directory.
- ^
- HEDTBL 0 0
- Resolve the problem with the non-keyed table for multitable edit.
-
- The first table you have selected for the current edit operation is not
- keyed. While it is OK to use a non-keyed table if you are only editing
- one table, you can't edit multiple tables in a single operation unless
- all of the tables are keyed. You therefore have two choices at this point:
-
- DO-IT!, to keep the first non-keyed table you've selected for this edit
- operation. The current operation will thus be a single table edit.
-
- CANCEL, to remove the non-keyed table from the list and select other tables.
- ^
- HVTABLES 0 0
- Select the tables to be used for the operation.
-
- SELECTTABLE allows you to pick tables to be used in the current operation.
-
- ALLTABLES allows you to specify that all of the application tables will be
- used in the current operation.
-
- DO-IT! saves the list of tables for this operation.
-
- If you select more than one table, you will be asked to define a multitable
- view.
- ^
- HCK1TO1 1 0
- Select CANCEL to redefine the view, DO-IT! to ignore warning and continue.
-
- The multitable view you've specified may permit the user to change the data
- in inappropriate ways. For Example:
-
- ORDERS Order# Part# Quan STOCK Part# Descr Price
- ------ ----- ---- ----- ----- -------
- 1 123 10 123 Hammer 12.00
- 2 123 5 325 Screw 24.00
- COMBINED
- SOURCE TABLE Order# Part# Descr Quan Price
- ------ ----- ----- ---- ------
- 1 123 Hammer 10 12.00
- 2 123 Hammer 5 12.00
-
- If users edit the highlighted item, neither the STOCK table nor the rest of
- the records in the combined table will be properly updated. You should con-
- sider having the user edit the separate tables instead of a multitable edit.
- ^
- HREGKEYS 0 0
- Do you want to modify the selected form to make key fields display-only?
-
- The list below shows key fields that are placed as Regular fields on the
- form you've selected. If users edit the values in these fields, records in
- the table(s) being edited may become disordered. MODIFY allows you to change
- the form; DO-IT! allows you to ignore this warning and leave the form as is.
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- ^
- HCREATESYS 1 1
- Creating a table.
-
- To create a new table, fill in the two columns of the STRUCT table.
-
- Field Names will become column headings for the new table. Names can be
- up to 25 characters long. Names may not begin with a blank, but may
- contain blanks, and must be unique. Names may not contain the characters
- [ or ], or the combination ->. If you retype a name, the field will be
- moved to the new position. Capital initials will automatically be used.
- If you don't want initial caps, you can edit the name using [Alt][F5].
-
- Field Type specifies what kind of data the field will contain.
-
- Placing an asterisk after the Field Type specifier will make it a key
- field. Key fields must be grouped together at the beginning of the table
- (from top to bottom when filling in the STRUCT table).
- ^

- CANCEL lets you define a selection that returns the user to the previous menu
- ^
- HCKVMODIFY 0 0
- Specify whether or not to replace the currently-defined view.
-
- If you replace the currently-defined view, you will have to specify a new
- form or report specification for the current operation. In addition,
- if the operation includes a query to specify records, that query will
- have to be respecified.
-
- CANCEL allows you to keep the current table or view.
-
- REPLACE allows you to go ahead and change the table or view.
- ^
- HMVMENU 0 0
- Enter the names of menu selections and their descriptions.
-
- Menu selection names can be up to 20 characters long, descriptions up to 60.
-
- - and - move you around the menu you are designing. [Ins] inserts a new
- selection, [Del] deletes the highlighted selection. [F9] allows you to edit

- Enter the prompt for the variable.
-
- Provide a descriptive phrase users will be prompted with when asked to
- specify a value for the query variable.
-
- Prompts may be up to 70 characters long.
-
- Examples:
- Enter the two character abbreviation of the State:
- Enter the Customer Number:
- ^
- HVARTYPE 0 0
- Confirm the data type of the variable.
-
- The Personal Programmer assumes that the data type of the variable is the
- same as the field type of the field in which it is placed. This may not be
- the case, especially when dealing with dates and numbers. For example, you
- may want to use a variable to add a number to a date in a date field. In
- this case, the Personal Programmer would make the incorrect assumption that
- the variable is a date. You may also want to change the length of an
- alphanumeric variable.
- The assumed data type of the variable is shown at the top of the screen. If
- it's not correct, backspace over it and replace it with the proper data type.
- ^
- HQFILL 1 1
- Selecting the records to be displayed.
-
- The following query operators CAN be used in selection criteria:
- Literal values (e.g. New York, 2/1/86, 123)
- Patterns: Groups, Comparisons:
- .. any group of characters not negation
- @ any single character < less than
- like inexact match <= less than or equal
- today today's date > greater than
- blank empty field >= greater than or equal
- Tilde variables (e.g. ~orderdate) can be used to provide for end user
- input. The user will be prompted to fill in the value to select on.
-
- The following Paradox query operators CANNOT be used through the Programmer:
- All Calc operators, Insert, Delete, Changeto, Find, Examples using [F5],

- ^
- HINSDELRECORD 0 0
- Specify if you want to allow insertion or deletion of records in the edit.
-
- The default setting is no insertion or deletion. Note that this default
- provides maximum data integrity (insertion of large numbers of records
- should be done in data entry mode, not in edit mode; it may be dangerous
- to allow users to delete records). However, performance of the application
- during the edit operation is increased if insert and delete are allowed.
-
- [Esc] returns to the previous menu.
- ^
- HDOCHOOSESET 1 1
- Specifying field formats and validity checks.
-
- To specify a format or a validity check for a field, move the cursor to the

- HVDEFINE 0 0
- Specify a multitable view to be used for the operation.
-
- Because you have indicated that more than one table is to be used in the
- current operation, it is necessary to specify a multitable view. This
- involves designating a multitable source table and map. You may either
- create a new view or borrow an existing view. For more information on
- multitable operations, see Chapter 10 of the Personal Programmer User's
- Guide.
-
- CREATE allows you to define a new multitable view for the current operation.
- BORROW allows you to borrow an existing multitable view.
- ^
- HVCHANGE 0 0
- Specify the method to change the view.
-
- MODIFY lets you change the view already specified.
-
- CREATE allows you to define a new multitable view for the current operation.
-
- BORROW allows you to borrow an existing multitable view.
- ^
- HFLDCHOOSE 0 0
- Indicate whether you want to select fields or use all fields in the table.
-
- SELECTFIELDS lets you use a query form to specify that only certain fields
- are to be active during the current operation. This is the same as using
- checkmarks in a query form to indicate the fields to be displayed in the
- ANSWER table in Paradox. (In the Personal Programmer, you can't checkmark
- fields at the same time as you are specifying selection criteria).
-
- ALLFIELDS allows you to include all fields in the table in the current
- operation. This is equivalent to checking all the fields in a query form
- in Paradox.
- ^
- HFLDMODIFY 0 0
- Indicate whether to modify, select fields, or use all fields in the table.
-
- MODIFY lets you change the fields selected.
-
- SELECTFIELDS lets you use a query form to specify that only certain fields
- are to be active during the current operation. This is the same as using
- checkmarks in a query form to indicate the fields to be displayed in the
- ANSWER table in Paradox.
-
- ALLFIELDS allows you to include all fields in the table in the current
- operation.
- ^
- HVCREATE 1 1
- Designing a multitable view.
-
- Creating a multitable view involves specifying how the various tables you
- have selected for the current operation are to be linked together. Use
- the [F5] key to create Examples that will indicate the fields that
- correspond in the tables.
-
- Then use [F6] to place a checkmark in the fields from the tables that you
- want to be active. One and only one checkmark must be placed in each
- pair or group of fields that are linked together through Examples.
-
- No selection criteria may be indicated on the query forms at this
- point.
-
- The multitable view you specify will automatically create source and map
- tables that will be used to link the tables you have specified. For
- more information on source and map tables, see Chapter 10 of the
- Personal Programmer User's Guide.
- ^
- HFLDSELECT 1 1
- Selecting the fields to use for the View.
-
- Use [F6] to place a CheckMark (√) in the fields of the table that
- you want to be active. This is the same as Checking fields in a query
- form in Paradox.
-
- No selection criteria may be indicated on the query form at this point.
- You will have the opportunity to select records during the next step in
- building the application.
-
- When you are finished Checking the fields you want, press DO-IT! [F2] or
- press Menu [F10] and select DO-IT! from the menu.
-
- Select CANCEL from the menu to return to the previous menu.
- ^
- HVDOMODIFY 0 0
- Specify whether to keep the table or tables used in the current view.
-
- KEEP allows you to retain the table or tables used in the view for the
- current operation. You can then revise the view to change the fields
- it includes.
-
- NEW allows you to select new tables for the view used in the current
- operation.
- ^
- HVMODIFY 0 0
- Indicate whether you want to keep or modify the existing table or view.
-
- KEEP indicates that you want to retain the existing table or view.
-
- MODIFY indicates that you want to change the existing table or view.
- If you modify the existing view, you will have to respecify any
- reports, selection queries, and forms that are used in the current
- operation.
- ^
- HQDEFINE 0 0
- Specify the records to be included for the operation.
-
- At this point, you can decide whether to specify selection criteria for
- the records that will be presented to the user for this menu operation
- or to display all records in the relevent table or tables.
-
- SELECTRECORDS allows you to create a query that will be used to specify
- the records that will be shown to the user in this operation.
-
- ALLRECORDS allows you to display all records in the table or tables used
- in the current operation.
- ^
- HQMODIFY 0 0
- Indicate whether you want to keep or modify the existing selection query.
-
- KEEP indicates that you want to retain the existing selection query.
-
- MODIFY indicates that you want to change the existing query.
-
- CREATE indicates that you want to totally replace the existing query, or
- to design a new one from scratch if no query currently exists.
-
- NOQUERY indicates that you want to remove an existing selection query.
- ^
- HBORROWMETHOD 0 0
- Specify the method you will use to borrow the view.
-
- MENU allows you to move around the menu of the application you are
- currently designing and to borrow the view associated with a particular
- menu selection.
-
- NAME allows you to specify a source table and map by name.
- ^
- HVBORROW 0 0
- Pick the menu selection with the view you want to borrow.
-
- Use the - and - keys to move around the menu display.
- Press ┘ to move down a menu level, [Esc] to move up a level.
-
- When the menu selection with the view you want to borrow is highlighted,
- press [F10] and select BORROWVIEW from the menu.
-
- To cancel borrowing a view by menu, press [F10] and select CANCEL from
- the menu.
- ^
- HANAMESUM 0 0
- Enter the name of the application to summarize, then press ┘.
-
- Application names can be from 1 to 5 characters long. The name may not
- contain spaces.
- ^
- HGETDIR 0 0
- Enter the name of the directory in which to copy the entire application.
-
- When naming the subdirectory to copy the application to, it is preferable to
- use its full path name. For example, C:\paradox\sample specifies that you
- want to use the \sample subdirectory under the \paradox directory on your
- C: drive.
-
- After the copy, you should copy any files which the application does not
- explicitly know about. For example, any lookup tables or tables or scripts
- referenced within a user defined script which is assigned to a menu
- selection will not be copied.
-
- ^
- HANAMECREATE 0 0
- Enter a name for the new application, then press ┘.
-
- Application names can be from 1 to 5 characters long. The name may not
- contain spaces.
- ^
- HFMODDESC 0 0
- Change the description of the form you will be designing.
-
- Give a description of the form you will be designing. This description
- can help you keep track of the different forms you design for each table.
-
- The description can be up to 40 characters long.
- ^
- HRMODDESC 0 0
- Change the description of the report you will be designing.
-
- Give a description of the report you will be designing. This description
- can help you keep track of the different reports you design for each table.
-
- The description is also used as the title for the report (you can change
- this if you wish).
-
- The description can be up to 40 characters long.
