- `startup Installing LANtastic (tm)
- This utility allows you to install the |LANtastic| software on a
- network computer and, if it is a server, to set up an initial network
- control directory. Before performing the installation on any machine,
- you should choose a unique name (1-15 characters) for each computer on
- the network, and decide which machines' resources (printers and disk
- drives) will be shared with the rest of the network.
- `qstartup
- Are you ready to begin installing LANtastic on this computer
- (Y or N)? `
- `sorw Servers and Workstations
- Two classes of machines can be set up on the network. A |Workstation|
- may use the resources (disk drives and printers) of servers on the
- network, but cannot share its resources with the other computers. A
- |Server| can use the resources of other servers as well as allowing its
- own resources to be shared. Neither selection will restrict local use
- of your computer. More resident memory is required to support a server
- than a workstation, so your machine should be installed as a
- workstation unless it has printers or disk drives which are to be
- shared with other machines on the network.
- `qsorw
- Install as a Server (S) or as a Workstation (W)? `
- `machname Network node machine name
- Each machine on the network must be identified by a unique name. This
- name can be from one to fifteen characters long and must not contain
- blanks or special delimiter characters. If your machine is a server,
- this is the name workstations will use to gain access to your
- computer's resources.
- `qmachname
- Enter this computer's network name: `
- `servname Remote server's machine name
- After LANtastic is installed, this computer can log in to and access
- the resources of remote servers on the network. If you enter the name
- of a remote server here, INSTALL will include the necessary commands,
- in the startup sequence, to log in to the server (with username "USER"
- and no password) and will attach to its disk resources. Enter an empty
- line here if no automatic connection should be performed.
- `qservname
- Enter the name of a remote server to which this machine should be
- automatically connected when the local LANtastic network software is
- started: `
- `exedir The LANtastic program directory
- The LANtastic program directory contains executable programs and other
- files which are required for LANtastic to operate. This directory will
- normally be in your DOS search path, so that network programs can be
- run without changing directories. By convention, this directory is
- named "|\LANTASTI|" and resides on your primary hard drive; however,
- you may place it in another directory if this is not suitable.
- `qexedir
- Enter the directory path in which to place the LANtastic program
- files: `
- `exeupd Updating an existing program directory
- The requested LANtastic program directory is already present on your
- computer. If you update the existing installation the files in this
- directory will be overwritten by those on the installation disk. If
- you choose not to update the existing installation, no files will be
- copied into the program directory.
- `qexeupd
- Directory %0 already exists. Replace the
- existing installation (Y or N)? `
- `netdir The LANtastic network control directory
- The network control directory contains various data files which define
- server startup parameters, resources, user account information, etc.
- It is present only on server computers and should be placed on a hard
- drive. The directory is normally named "|\LANTASTI.NET|", and may be
- placed on any drive (|C| is typical).
- |NOTE: although you may specify any directory name, using any other
- name than \LANTASTI.NET is not recommended for the novice user. See
- the LANtastic User's Guide for more information.|
- `qnetdir
- Enter the name of the LANtastic network control
- directory: `
- `defaults Installing default network resources
- When a network control directory is initially created, it is "blank."
- Before the server can be accessed by workstations, resources must be
- defined for each disk drive and printer which is to be shared. In
- addition, user accounts must be set up to allow workstations to log in
- to the server. All of this can be done later, using the NET_MGR
- program, but you have the option of creating a "default" set of
- resources and a default user account at this time. For a basic network
- configuration, these defaults should be sufficient. An electronic mail
- resource, a printer resource, and a resource for each disk drive will
- be created, as well as an account with the username "USER", with no
- password.
- `qdefaults
- Install default resources and USER account (Y or N)? `
- `config.sys The MSDOS startup configuration file
- A modified version of %0 has been placed in directory
- %1. The FILES, BUFFERS, LASTDRIVE, and FCBS
- parameters may have been adjusted to support network operation.
- The modified lines are:
-
- Old New |
- %2
- %3
- %4
- %5|
- Answering |Y| to this question will update your actual CONFIG.SYS,
- placing the old version in CONFIG.BAK.
- `qconfig.sys
- Update %0 with the new FILES, BUFFERS, LASTDRIVE,
- and FCBS parameters? `
- `share File and record locking support program
- |SHARE.EXE| is a program, normally supplied with MS-DOS, which loads
- and remains resident in memory. When run on a network server, it
- allows for several workstations to access the same file concurrently.
- Many network-based application programs will not run correctly unless
- SHARE is installed on the server. Answer |Y| to this question unless
- you are loading SHARE, or you know that you don't need it.
- `qshare
- Load SHARE.EXE as part of the server start-up
- sequence (Y or N)? `
- `startnet The network startup batch file
- The name you gave for the network startup batch file is already in use
- on your computer. If you want to replace it with a new version, answer
- |Y| to this question; otherwise, answer |N| and you can enter a new
- filename.
- `qstartnet
- Startup file %0 is already present. Replace
- with new startup commands (Y or N)? `
- `summary1 Starting LANtastic
- LANtastic Installation is complete.
-
- To bring up LANtastic on this machine, type the following command
- at the DOS prompt after booting:
-
- |%0|
-
- You can also place the contents of this batch file into your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT, so the network software will be started automatically
- each time your computer is rebooted. See your |LANtastic User's Guide|
- for more information.
- `summary2 Installation complete
- LANtastic Installation is complete.
-
-
- The LANtastic (tm) NOS is now installed on this computer. See your
- |LANtastic User's Guide| for more information on starting the network
- and configuring server resources.
- `qsummary
- Press |Enter| to return to the DOS prompt: `
- `dostart Creating a network startup batch file
- From the information you provide, INSTALL can create a file containing
- a sequence of MS-DOS commands which will bring up the network software
- on your machine. Each time you want to start LANtastic, you will need
- only to run the batch file. If this is the first installation of
- LANtastic on this machine, or you are uncertain of the startup commands
- to use, you should answer |Y| to this question; otherwise, you can
- speed up the installation process by answering |N|.
- `qdostart
- Create an initial network startup batch file (Y or N)? `
- `startname The network startup batch file name
- The initial network startup batch file can have any valid DOS filename
- and may be placed in any directory. By convention, the file is named
- "STARTNET.BAT" and resides in the LANTASTI directory.
- However, if you will have multiple startup files or prefer another
- directory, the name can be changed here. Remember to put the file in a
- directory which is in your DOS search path if you want to be able to
- execute it from any directory.
- `qstartname
- Enter the full pathname of the network startup batch
- file: `
