  34. WHAT'S IN YOUR SERIAL INTERFACE KIT

  37. This Serial Interface Kit contains the cable and software that enables you to
  38. transfer files between your HP 48 calculator and your computer.  In addition,
  39. we've provided several useful applications. 
  40.  
  41. The on-line documentation uses [ ] to represent an HP 48 keyboard key and { } 
  42. to represent a menu key.
  43.  
  44. Here is a list and description of the programs in this product:
  45.  
  46.      KERMIT.EXE        The protocol for transferring files between an MS-DOS(R)
  47.                        computer and an HP 48. (Kermit must be running on the
  48.                        computer before you can transfer files.)
  49.  
  50.      GROB2TIF.EXE      An MS-DOS program to convert an HP 48 graphics
  51.                        object into TIFF (Tag Image File Format) format.
  52.  
  53.      APPT              An appointment calender program for the calculator.
  54.  
  55.      USAG              A calculator program that enables you to see the
  56.                        usage for any HP 48 command.
  57.  
  58.      CLK               A calculator program that adjusts the calculator's
  59.                        system clock to keep it accurate.
  60.  
  61.      INPRT             A calculator program that enables the HP 48 to receive
  62.                        infrared output from other HP calculators.
  63.  
  64.      STPWATCH.LIB      An HP 48 library containing a stopwatch application
  65.                        for the calculator.
  66.  
  67.      PCLPRINT.LIB      An HP 48 library that enables you to print a graphics
  68.                        object on a PCL printer, such as the HP DeskJet printer.

  70.      EPSPRINT.LIB      An HP 48 library that enables you to print a graphics
  71.                        object on an Epson printer, such as the FX-85 printer.

  74. HOW TO USE THESE APPLICATIONS
  75. -----------------------------

  77. Each program has an associated documentation file with a .TXT filename
  78. extension (for example, EPSPRINT.TXT, INPRT.TXT, and KERMIT.TXT).  To learn
  79. how to use a program, read its .TXT file and follow the instructions there.
  80. You may want to print these files to get the documentation on paper.

  82. The instructions in the .TXT files assume that you're familiar with HP 48
  83. terminology and procedures, so you may need to refer to your "HP 48 Owner's
  84. Manual" at times.

  86. Since you need to be running Kermit on your computer to transfer files
  87. between the computer and the HP 48, the KERMIT.TXT file is a good file to
  88. read first.

  91. CABLE WIRING INFORMATION
  92. ------------------------
  93. The cable included in your package is wired to work with MS-DOS computers.  If
  94. you wish to use the cable with another type of computer or with a printer, you
  95. may need an adapter. The following table shows how the 9-pin connecter and the
  96. 25-pin adapter included are wired.

  106. HP CALCULATOR BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM

  109. An HP Calculator Bulletin Board System is available for the exchange
  110. of software and information among HP calculator users, developers, and
  111. distributors. The bulletin board operates at 300/1200/2400 baud, full
  112. duplex, no parity, 8 bits, 1 stop bit. The telephone number is (503)
  113. 750-4448. The bulletin board is a free service--you pay only for the
  114. long-distance telephone charge.

  116. The "MS-DOS KERMIT USER GUIDE" ((c) Columbia University in the city of New 
  117. York, 1981, 1988) is available on the HP Calculator Bulletin Board System.

  123. For additional information on Kermit protocol, a book by Frank da Cruz,
  124. "KERMIT, A File Transfer Protocol" (1987. Bedford, MA: Digital Press), is 
  125. available in many bookstores or can be ordered.

  128. the product.
