- FREELANCE GRAPHICS FOR DOS
-
- This file contains addenda to the documentation and additional information
- about Freelance Graphics for DOS.
-
- 1. Freelance Graphics for DOS now supports the optional use of the
- Lotus-Intel-Microsoft Expanded Memory Specification (EMS). The software
- has been tested with the Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager-386[tm]
- (QEMM-386)[tm] (version 5.11).
-
- Freelance Graphics automatically uses 64K of expanded memory if it is
- available when you start Freelance Graphics. You cannot increase or
- decrease the amount of expanded memory that Freelance Graphics uses, but
- you can turn off support for expanded memory.
-
- The following table summarizes the new memory requirements for Freelance
- Graphics. Add 22K to these requirements if you use GrandView LT.
-
-
- With 64K EMS Without EMS
-
- Freelance Graphics (type fl) 406,000 bytes (395K) 466,000 bytes (455K)
-
- Freelance Small (type fl s) 393,000 bytes (384K) 453,000 bytes (443K)
-
- Freelance Large (type fl l) 468,000 bytes (458K) 526,000 bytes (514K)
-
-
- NOTE: Depending on your hardware and memory management software, if you
- use extended memory you may be able to revise your configuration to
- reserve a 64K segment of expanded memory. See your memory manager
- documentation for details. If you are using GrandView LT with Freelance
- Graphics, see your GrandView LT documentation for more information.
-
- Using Freelance Graphics with Expanded Memory
-
- There are no special installation procedures required. To start Freelance
- Graphics, change to the Freelance Graphics directory and type fl. If
- available, Freelance Graphics automatically takes advantage of EMS and
- displays a message on the Access Manager.
-
- Freelance Graphics places command prompts, chart style settings, device
- configuration, print options, and error message files into expanded
- memory. Use of EMS does not expand drawing or charting space, but may
- enable you to use the Freelance Graphics Large startup option, which
- does. Use of EMS may improve performance of raster printing devices,
- because more conventional memory is available for bitmap creation.
-
- Turning Expanded Memory Support Off
-
- Even if your system has 64K or more of expanded memory, you have the
- option of running Freelance Graphics without it. To do this, type fl x to
- start Freelance Graphics. The "x" switch disables expanded memory support
- for that session.
-
- NOTE: You can also use the "x" switch in conjunction with all other
- Freelance Graphics startup options, including GrandView (gvfl x),
- Freelance Graphics Small (fl s x), and Freelance Graphics Large (fl l x).
- Be sure to include a space between the startup option and the "x" switch
- or Freelance Graphics will ignore the "x" switch.
-
- 2. Do not write protect the Install & Utilities Disk before you install
- Freelance Graphics. Doing so prevents FLINSTAL from properly registering
- your copy of the software and unpredictable results may occur.
-
- 3. Your monitor may not be able to adequately represent the colors and shades
- available on your output device. This may cause confusion when you use
- Select Like and have the item "Use actual output colors and fills" set to
- Yes, because objects that look alike on the screen may not be selected.
- For example, when you are using a black-and-white output device, objects
- that are actually different colors may all appear black on the screen.
- This is also true when you are using color output devices and color
- screens. Select Like selects all objects of the same type with the same
- characteristics (such as color, line style, and font) as the currently
- selected objects, independent of the way the objects appear on the
- screen. You may find it easier to set the item "Use actual output colors
- and fills" to No when you want to use Select Like.
-
- 4. To recompose a chart to fit the full page after changing the Orientation
- item on the Print Options form, select Chart Edit-data and then choose
- Full page from the Chart location pop-up menu.
-
- 5. If you do not have enough memory to display or print your drawing page
- with the backdrop file, you will receive the message NOT ENOUGH MEMORY,
- BACKDROP FILE NOT DISPLAYED. Freelance Graphics changes the "Show
- backdrop file on the draw page and when you print" item on the View Mode
- form to No. If you have not already done so, start Freelance Graphics with
- the increased memory option. To do so, start Freelance Graphics by typing
- fl l at the DOS prompt. Then change the View Mode item "Show backdrop
- file on the draw page and when you print" to Yes. If this does not work,
- or if you are already using the increased memory option, simplify your
- drawing page or backdrop file.
-
- 6. When you use AUTOPFL.COM to print a portfolio from the DOS command line,
- Freelance Graphics creates a log file in the directory containing your
- Portfolio file. The file has the same name as your Portfolio file and the
- extension .LOG. You can use the DOS TYPE command to see the contents of
- the log file.
-
- Freelance Graphics puts the same information in a file named BATCH.LOG in
- the Freelance Graphics program directory. You can read the information in
- this file by using the Portfolio Print Status command.
-
- If you cannot find or read the log file in the directory containing your
- Portfolio file, try reading the BATCH.LOG file.
-
- 7. GrandView LT requires 22,600 bytes (22K) of memory in addition to the
- memory required for Freelance Graphics.
-
- 8. Check the GrandView LT information file for clarifications and additional
- information about GrandView LT. To access the GrandView LT information
- file from within GrandView LT, select O to open an outline and then select
- the outline named README. To access the GrandView LT information file
- from the DOS prompt, type "type readme.txt".
