  19.      I will bet you are wondering what a FERRET is. Some background information
  20. is deserved by users of this program. I have chosen the name FERRET not because
  21. a FERRET is a White European Polecat but because of the speed at which it can
  22. search all fields of all its records. The verb FERRET, usually used as FERRET
  23. out, means to find, search or locate. This FERRET is a fast and easy to use 
  24. Address Book, phone dialer, plus some.

  55.      The FERRET is a very easy to use data base program. So that the program
  56. always knows where to find the configuration file, FERRET.EXE must be placed in
  57. the path  or  the path to  FERRET.EXE, FERRET.CNF and the data files must be 
  58. placed on the DOS Command line like so:
  59.

  62. Better still, do the following and create a batch file:
  63.  
  64.                         COPY CON FE.BAT     
  65.                         C:\UTILS\FERRET.EXE C:\UTILS\ 
  66.                         control/Z

  68.                   Note: Substitute your paths in this example.
  69.  
  70.      Now when you type FE from the DOS Command prompt the program will run
  71. getting it's configuration from the file FERRET.CNF located in the utils
  72. directory.

  74.      The data file will also be placed in the default directory. Several Data
  75. files may be used and the one in use can be changed while running the Program.
  76. From the menu select CONFIG. The default filename is FERRET.DAT.

  78.      If you elect to just place FERRET.EXE in the path, then all you will need
  79. to do is type FERRET from the command line, in which case everything else will
  80. be automatic. If you don't know what paths have been set up in your computer
  81. just type the command PATH from the command line. You should get a line like
  82. this:
  83.           PATH=C:\DOS;C:\BATCH;C:\UTILS;....ETC....
  84. Select one of the directories in the path statement and copy the file 
  85. FERRET.EXE to it. That's all there is to it.

  105.                         Modem Setup and Dialing Defaults

  108.      Some modems need more time to process commands. This is normal in the
  109. faster modems. From config at the menu, adjust the command time to suit your
  110. needs. Also you are allowed to enter command strings to send to your modem, 
  111. such as setting dialing speed, setting volume on the modem etc. Check your 
  112. modem instruction book for a listing of these settings.
  113.  
  114.          Note: The defaults that I have chosen work with most Hayes
  115.                           and clones of Hayes modems.
  116.  
  117.      Dialing the phone. Select the right record and press "D", after the phone
  118. starts ringing, pick up your receiver and press the space bar. If you get a 
  119. busy signal the program will go into automatic redial. The default redial delay 
  120. is 15 seconds. Once communications is established you may time a call using 
  121. the "T" command. This is an elapsed time timer. Pressing any key removes the 
  122. timer.

  125.                           Removing or Packing Records
  126.  
  127.      Killing a record does not really kill the record, it just marks it for
  128. deletion. You may unkill a record just by selecting the record and pressing "K"
  129. the second time. To remove killed records, use PACK from the menu. This time 
  130. its really gone. So before using pack, make sure you are ready.

  133.                                 Searches
  134.  
  135.      Searches are global. Example : You can look for part of a name say FRAN
  136. which would in the Last Name field find FRANKLIN, FRANCIS.. etc, it would also
  137. pick out FRANK, FRANNIE etc maybe in the first name field, or FRANKLIN ST. in 
  138. an address field. Remember the more letters you search for the more specific 
  139. your search will be.

  141.      Select Config from the menu, one of the options allows you to choose to
  142. always come up running in the search mode. This makes using the program fast-
  143. er to use. After making a call press ESC or [A]gain from the menu and you are
  144. ready to search for another number to dial. You may still get to the Browse
  145. mode by selecting [M]enu.

  147.                                 Printing
  148.  
  149.      Labels and Envelopes may be printed, one at a time from this program. When
  150. selecting labels you will be prompted for 4 or 5 lines. If you select 4 then 
  151. the first line will contain First Name, Mi, and Lastname. If you select 5 then
  152. the line for Lastname will be printed alone and also First Name will be printed
  153. alone. This will allow you to Print labels for companies with a line for Attn:
  154. in place of the first name. A similar situation exist for printing Envelopes.
  155. Only the number of lines are 3 and 4.

  165.      Not shown in the Menu's is the command Alt/X which allows an immediate 
  166. exit from the program. Also in every case that you can use the N or L (Next
  167. and Last) you may also use the Up/Down Cursor keys.

  169.      I'm sorry but you will only be allowed to have a little over 32,700
  170. addresses in each data file, but you can have as many data files as you have
  171. disk to store them on. I hope this won't be an inconvenience.

  173.      There is really nothing more about the Program that I could tell you that
  174. you probably don't already know, or that you will find out in the next ten
  175. minutes. Its easy to use.
  176.  
  177.      In the future I plan to look into making this program memory resident, for
  178. now you will have to settle for using it from the command line or from one of
  179. the multi-tasking programs like Windows or Desq View, etc. You may also run the
  180. program while inside other programs providing that they have a gateway to
  181. dos and you have enough room available.

  183.      In the works are Big Notes when needed, fashioned in such a way as to not
  184. waste precious disk space.
  185.      
  186.      Also in the works is a Sister program to print multiple mailing labels and
  187. a Phone Book using the Data Files from the FERRET. This program will be offered
  188. to all the registered users of the FERRET for the small sum of $5.00 to cover
  189. shipping and disk.

  191.      If you find the FERRET of value, I will accept the Payment of $15.00 as
  192. acceptable from commercial establishments, $10 each for Multiple installations
  193. of 3 or more. Private users send $10.00.      
  194.  
  195.      Since this is a shareware product, I can only rely on your integrity and
  196. honesty for payment. I encourage you to make copies of the original Zip files
  197. for your Boss, friends and associates. By all means upload the FERRET to your
  198. favorite bulletin boards. Please give out only a copy of the original Zip file
  199. which contains this file. I need and solicit your support. My promise to you is
  200. to continue to create software you will like at an affordable price.

  202.      If you decide to register this software, place FERRET.EXE and REGISTER.EXE
  203. in the same directory and run the program REGISTER.EXE. Turn on the printer and
  204. be ready to print a registration form. If you are registering as an individual
  205. please do not put anything in the line for company name. Thank you in advance
  206. for registering FERRET, all my beta testers here in Bastrop love it, and I hope
  207. you will too.
