  36. Here is a breakdown of what this distribution contains:

  38.     Section 1 = user commands (intro, and pages not maintained by FSF)
  39.     Section 2 = system calls
  40.     Section 3 = libc calls
  41.     Section 4 = devices (e.g., hd, sd)
  42.     Section 5 = file formats and protocols (e.g., wtmp, /etc/passwd, nfs)
  43.     Section 6 = games (intro only)
  44.     Section 7 = conventions, macro packages, etc.
  45.     Section 8 = system administration (intro only)
  46.  
  47.     Usually, there are no section 1, 6 and 8 man pages because these
  48.     should be distributed with the binaries they are written for.
  49.     Sometimes Section 9 is used for man pages describing parts of the kernel.

  51.     Note that only Section 2 is rather complete, but Section 3 contains
  52.     several hundred man pages.  If you want to write some man pages,
  53.     please do so and mail them to aeb@cwi.nl.
