  7. This text file provides information you should know about this 
  8. version of Undelete.
  9.  
  10.  
  11. TRIALWARE INFORMATION
  12. =====================
  13.  
  14. 1.  This copy of Undelete is a full-featured version with all the
  15.     functionality of the retail product.  The only difference 
  16.     between this and the retail version is that this version will
  17.     expire 30 days after you install it.
  18.  
  19. 2.  For information about purchasing Undelete, including volume 
  20.     discounts, contact your reseller, or contact Executive 
  21.     Software at 818-547-2050.  A detailed list of Undelete 
  22.     resellers is available from the Executive Software Web site 
  23.     at www.execsoft.com.

  26. PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
  27. =================================================
  28.  
  29. This version of Undelete is supported on Intel x86 platforms (or 
  30. their equivalent) running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.
  31. Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0 is recommended due to known 
  32. DCOM fixes in Service Pack 3. 
  33.  
  34. The Server version of Undelete can be installed on either Windows
  35. NT Servers or Workstations.  The Workstation version of Undelete 
  36. can only be installed on Windows NT Workstations.
  37.  
  38.  
  39. IMPORTANT NOTICES
  40. =================
  41.  
  42. 1.  Undelete is available in two versions - The Server version 
  43.     and the Workstation version.  With the Workstation version 
  44.     you can recover and undelete files on a local Workstation or 
  45.     Server.  With the Server version you can recover and undelete
  46.     files and directory folders on your local machine as well as 
  47.     on remote computers on your network.
  48.  
  49. 2.  If you are installing an upgrade version of Undelete, you 
  50.     must have a commercial, non-trialware version of the product
  51.     installed on your computer.
  52.  
  53.  
  54. CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
  55. =======================
  56.  
  57. The following changes have been made to Undelete since version 
  58. 1.0:
  59.  
  60. o   Starting with version 1.2, the offical name of our product 
  61.     has been changed from Executive Software Network Undelete 
  62.     to Undelete for Windows NT, also referred to as Undelete.
  63.  
  64. o   Drag & Drop is supported in this version.  You can now
  65.     drag an object directly from the desktop or from Windows
  66.     NT Explorer to the Recovery Bin icon on your desktop. 
  67.     Note that the exclusion list does not apply to Drag & 
  68.     Drop operations.  A "dragged & dropped" object will be 
  69.     moved to the Recovery Bin, even if it is listed on the
  70.     recovery Bin exclusion list.
  71.  
  72. o   This version has been internationalized.  Non-English
  73.     versions of Windows NT are now supported.
  74.  
  75. o   The Digital Alpha platform is now supported.  
  76.  
  77. o   If a previous version of Undelete is detected during the 
  78.     installation, you are given the option to save the previous 
  79.     Recovery Bin properties and apply them to the new 
  80.     installation.
  81.  
  82. o   The default installation directory for the Server
  83.     and Workstation version is now \ExecSoft\Undelete.
  84.  
  85. o   An incompatibility problem noted between version 1.0 and 
  86.     Dr. SolomanÆs Anti Virus has been corrected.
  87.  
  88. o   A change has been made to correct a situation that could
  89.     cause a process hang when running version 1.0.
  90.     This change also corrects the potential for a system crash
  91.     when running Undelete on dual-processor systems.
  92.  
  93. o   In version 1.0, under certain circumstances, NTFS
  94.     file header information was read incorrectly and a message 
  95.     was erroneously displayed indicating the user had 
  96.     insufficient privileges to undelete a file.  This error has 
  97.     been corrected in this version.
  98.  
  99. o   In some cases with version 1.0, a deleted NTFS file
  100.     could be undeleted directly from the disk, but the
  101.     original file security attributes would not be restored
  102.     to the recovered file.  This would cause a message to be
  103.     erroneously displayed indicating the user had insufficient 
  104.     privileges to undelete a file.  With this version, the 
  105.     recovery status message displayed when the file is recovered 
  106.     indicates that the file was recovered, but the file security 
  107.     attributes were not restored.
  108.  
  109. o   In version 1.0, the check marks on the Setup dialog box
  110.     were mis-aligned on some systems, depending on the default
  111.     font being used on system.  This has been corrected in 
  112.     this version.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS/LIMITATIONS IN THIS RELEASE
  116. ==============================================
  117.  
  118. 1.  When you undelete a file, you must first specify the filename
  119.     and directory path before finding the deleted files.  Wildcard
  120.     statements (such as * and ?) are supported for specifying the 
  121.     filename.
  122.  
  123. 2.  The Recovery Bin Exclusion List does not allow you to exclude 
  124.     entire partitions from being processed.  Instead, use the 
  125.     Recovery Bin Properties dialog to disable the Recovery Bin on 
  126.     individual partitions.
  127.  
  128. 3.  If a partition is re-formatted, removed, or has its drive 
  129.     letter changed, the Recovery Bin will be disabled for that 
  130.     partition.  You must reset the Recovery Bin properties to 
  131.     re-enable the Recovery Bin on that partition.
  132.  
  133. 4.  When the Recovery Bin is enabled for a partition, the 
  134.     \RecoveryBin folder cannot be deleted.  The Recovery Bin must 
  135.     first be disabled before this folder can be deleted.
  136.  
  137. 5.  On NTFS partitions, only Small and Large file types are 
  138.     eligible for being undeleted directly from the disk.  However, 
  139.     all file types can be recovered from the Recovery Bin.
  140.  
  141. 6.  Files that have been compressed using NTFS file compression 
  142.     can be recovered from the Recovery Bin, but they cannot be 
  143.     recovered with the Undelete From Disk feature after they have 
  144.     been really deleted.  Only non-compressed files can be 
  145.     undeleted.  Note, however, this only applies to files 
  146.     compressed with the native Windows NT file compression.  It
  147.     does not apply to files compressed with third-party utilities
  148.     such as PkZip and WinZip.
  149.  
  150. 7.  The default name for a common recovery bin (one bin location 
  151.     for a given system) is "<system drive>:\CommonBin".  This 
  152.     location can be configured from the Properties dialog box. 
  153.     This can be set to any valid directory name as long as it 
  154.     does not conflict with the local recovery bin name on that 
  155.     drive ("<Drive>:\RecoveryBin"). 
  156.  
  157. 8.  When using a single Recovery Bin for all drives (a.k.a. 
  158.     storing deleted files in the \CommonBin folder), a file must 
  159.     minimally have READ permission granted to the SYSTEM group.  
  160.     Otherwise, the file will bypass the common Recovery Bin when
  161.     it is deleted.

  163.  
  164. THIRD PARTY INCOMPATIBILITY LIST
  165. ================================
  166.  
  167. Undelete is incompatible with the following third party software
  168. applications:
  169.  
  170. 1.  Norton Protect.  Undelete and Norton Protect perform similar
  171.     activities that are not compatible.
  172.  
  173. 2.  QuarterDeck Cleansweep.  Incompatibility between components
  174.     of Undelete and Cleansweep has been noted.  However, it has
  175.     been observed that when Undelete is installed first, 
  176.     Cleansweep can then be installed and both products run 
  177.     correctly.  If Cleansweep is installed first, Undelete will 
  178.     not start correctly.  Therefore, if you have installed 
  179.     Cleansweep prior to installing Undelete, we recommend that 
  180.     you uninstall Cleansweep before installing Undelete.
  181.  
  182.     On installation of Undelete, a check for the QuarterDeck 
  183.     Cleansweep software is made, and if found, you are warned
  184.     that Undelete is not compatible with it.
  185.  
  186. 3.  One site reported that a product named Virtual Address does 
  187.     not function when Undelete is installed.  This has not been
  188.     independently confirmed.
  189.  
  190.  
  191. REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
  192. ===================
  193.  
  194. You must be a member of the Administrators Group to install
  195. Undelete and to undelete files directly from the disk.
  196.  
  197. Members of the Users Group can recover files from the Recovery
  198. Bin.  However, they must have sufficient file permissions and 
  199. ownership to recover a file from the Recovery Bin.
  200.  
  201.  
  202. INSTALLING UNDELETE
  203. ===================
  204.  
  205. After downloading the compressed Zip file into a temporary
  206. directory on your Windows NT system and UnZipping it, 
  207. follow these steps while logged on to an account that is a
  208. member of the Administrators Group:
  209.  
  210. 1.  From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click the
  211.     SETUP.EXE file in the directory where you UnZipped the
  212.     Undelete files.
  213.  
  214. 2.  Read the information displayed in the Setup Installation 
  215.     Wizard boxes and click the "Next" button as appropriate.
  216.  
  217. 3.  In the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box, either 
  218.     accept the default installation location, or click the 
  219.     "Browse" button to specify a different disk and/or directory. 
  220.     If you specify a directory that does not exist, the setup 
  221.     program will create it for you.  Click the "Next" button after
  222.     specifying a disk and directory, or to accept the default 
  223.     installation location.
  224.  
  225. 4.  After a short period of copying files, the installation is 
  226.     complete.
  227.  
  228. 5.  After the installation is complete, you will be prompted
  229.     to reboot your computer.  You must reboot your computer
  230.     to start the Undelete Service and device driver.
  231.  
  232.  
  233. UNINSTALLING UNDELETE
  234. =====================
  235.  
  236. Follow these steps to remove Undelete from your computer:
  237.  
  238. 1.  From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs".
  239.  
  240. 2.  Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab.
  241.  
  242. 3.  Highlight "Undelete".
  243.  
  244. 4.  Click the "Add/Remove" button.  This removes the Undelete 
  245.     program files from your computer.
  246.  
  247. 5.  The Uninstall program gives the option to reboot your
  248.     computer.  Undelete will not be completely removed until 
  249.     you reboot.
  250.  
  251. 6.  As a final step, manually delete the Undelete installation
  252.     directory if it exists.
