JAVA PROGRAMS FOR USING NEWMARK'S METHOD AND SIMPLIFIED DECOUPLED ANALYSIS TO MODEL SLOPE PERFORMANCE DURING EARTHQUAKES
U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 03-005
Version 1.1
INTRODUCTION
This program package is designed to allow users to conduct Newmark sliding-block analysis and simplified decoupled analysis to estimate co-seismic slope displacements. These instructions will guide users through the installation and set-up process. More detailed Help files on running the program are accessible from within the program once it is installed. Please read this entire document carefully before using the program.
This program is written in Java (version 1.3.1) to facilitate program operation across a variety of operating platforms. The program will only run on a computer that is running Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.3 or greater. If your computer does not currently have JRE installed, you will have to install it. The CD contains several versions of JRE for the most common computer platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Solaris. The Program will also run on Mac OS X, which has Java integrated. We cannot guarantee that the versions of JRE contained on this CD will be compatible with your computer, and you may need to locate and download the appropriate files from the internet. These files are available for free download at the following web site: http://java.sun.com/products/
WHAT'S DIFFERENT IN VERSION 1.1?
After releasing version 1.0, a few minor bugs were discovered. None of these affected the program output, but rather were in some "convenience" features. The following bugs were corrected:
1. When plotting earthquake records in the "Record Manager", the time scale was off by a factor of two. The time scale has been fixed.
2. When exporting data from the "Group Manager" on the "Select Records" page under "Rigorous Rigid-Block Analysis", the program would crash if certain records were being exported. This has been fixed so that data from any combination of records can be exported.
3. On the "Decoupled Analysis" page under "Simplified Analyses", it was not possible to specify the allowable displacement for the site screening procedure. The layout of this page has been updated, and the allowable displacement can now be specified.
4. Graphing has been made more efficient so that graphs are completed more rapidly.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. If you do not have JRE version 1.3 or greater, open the "JRE" folder (directory) on the CD and run the file corresponding to the program distribution you would like to install (Windows, Solaris, or Linux). The JRE program will open an installation dialogue. Default settings can be selected in most cases.
2. After JRE has been successfully installed, launch the INSTALL file from the CD-ROM. An installation dialog will appear. The program must be installed to a hard drive on your computer (it cannot be run from the CD-ROM). Default choices will generally work fine. Installation time varies depending on how many sets of earthquake records are selected; if all earthquake records are selected, installation will take several minutes and require nearly 400 MB of disk space. You will be prompted when installation is complete.
3. Launch the program by opening the "Newmark.jar" file in the "Programs" directory under the installation directory. If default settings are used in a Windows installation, this path will be C:\Program Files\Newmark\Programs\Newmark.jar. A shortcut to this file can be placed on the desktop. The program takes several seconds to load.
