Japanese musician and composer Sakamoto Ryūichi became the first Japanese person to receive an Academy Award for Music, Original Score, and a Grammy Award for the movie The Last Emperor, released in 1988. Sakamoto also composed the music for the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Olympics and Barcelona.
