- John S. Quarterman, Editor
- mids@tic.com
-
-
- The article ``Sizes of Four Networks in the Matrix,'' in the July
- *Matrix News* is an update to the summary of network sizes that
- appeared in the February issue. Some related growth graphs for
- the Internet, based on data from Mark Lottor, Marten Terpstra,
- and Merit, can be obtained by anonymous FTP from tic.com in the
- directory matrix/growth/internet.
-
- *Matrix News* has been running articles investigating the geographic
- extent of major global networks, including the number of hosts on each
- network in each country. The May and June 1992 issues contain two
- different views (by Barron and Quarterman) of some data (collected by
- Billy Barron) on hosts posting to USENET. ``Where is FidoNet?''
- appeared in June.
-
- ``Where is the Internet?,'' and ``Where is BITNET?'' in August and October
- each contain maps drawn by Gretchen Phillips of the world, of Europe,
- and of the United States, with a bar above each country or state
- indicating the number of hosts.
-
- Articles on more local networks and regions continue to appear,
- including Maged Boulos's ``Egyptian Science NETwork (ENSTINET),'' in
- May, which issue also included ``Bringing New Users into the Net,'' by
- Steve Ryan. June had ``A Look at Cuban Networks,'' by Larry Press and
- Joel Snyder. July had ``At Play in the Field of the Boards: Report on
- ONE BBSCON,'' by Steve Cisler. Bob Travica and Matthew Hogan published
- ``Computer Networking in the xUSSR: Actual and Potential Social
- Effects'' and ``The Matrix Spans the East'' in August and October, and
- Oleg Tabarovsky had ``Notes on some TCP/IP WAN activities in xSU'' in
- the June issue. The November issue includes ``Introduction on CRN,''
- by Mingdong Yan from Beijing, ``The Complete EBONE Up and Running,'' by
- Bernhard Stockman from Stockholm, and ``BBS in India,'' by Suchit Nanda
- from Bombay. We even had ``Nets in Science Fiction,'' by Daniel Dern,
- in August.
-
- One of our more popular articles is proving to be ``How Big is the
- Global Classroom?'' by Seth Itzkan, in October. We continue to include
- information on conferences, policy, and other issues, particularly
- network services, including two articles by Peter Deutsch.
-
- All issues starting with July have been available online, either by
- electronic mail (in either ASCII or PostScript) or by restricted FTP,
- in addition to the traditional paper version. Sample articles are
- available by anonymous FTP from the matrix/news directory on tic.com,
- or through the matrix_news WAIS database on quake.think.com. We also
- have a conference on the WELL, with all back issues, which are also
- available separately. For more information, send mail to mids@tic.com.
