  2. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

  4. Dear Internauts:
  5.  
  6. As the summer draws to a close, we can look back on an extremely successful
  7. INET92 Conference in Kobe, Japan.  The general chairman, Prof. Hideo Aiso, the
  8. program chairman, Prof. Haruhisa Ishida and the local arrangements chair,
  9. Prof. Jun Marai, together with what appeared to be a hundred volunteers,
  10. deserve great credit and the gratitude of the Internet Society for a very
  11. effective meeting.  The Board of Trustees met during this conference and took
  12. a number of important actions:
  13.  
  14.     (1)  Creation of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) and incorporation
  15.          of IETF and IRTF operations under the auspices of the Internet
  16.          Society.
  17.  
  18.     (2)  Appointment of Mr. Kees Neggers to the Board of Trustees.  Mr.
  19.          Neggers is president of Surfnet in the Netherlands.
  20.  
  21.     (3)  Adoption of a 1992 budget.
  22.  
  23.     (4)  Appointment of Mr. Mike Roberts to serve as Executive Director.
  24.  
  25.     (5)  Approval of executive, developing countries, disaster relief
  26.          coordination, elections, and nominations committees.
  27.  
  28.     (6)  Approval of motions to establish formal relations with the
  29.          International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and its International
  30.          Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT)
  31.  
  32.     (7)  Formal adoption and signing of the Charter and By-Laws of the
  33.          Internet Society.

  35. INET93 planning is in progress under the able direction of Mr. Eric Benhamou,
  36. president of 3COM.  The program committee co-chairs, Dr. Barry Leiner and
  37. Mr. William Yundt are well along in their work.  Internauts interested in
  38. working on any aspect of INET93 should contact Eric at
  39. eric_benhamou@3Mail.3Com.com.  INET93 will be held in San Francisco, 17-20 August
  40. 1993.  The Internet Society Advisory Council also met in Kobe under the
  41. interim chairmanship of Mr. Lee Caldwell of Novell.  A list of the
  42. organizational sponsors of the Internet Society appears on the back cover of
  43. this issue and on behalf of the Trustees and membership, I want to thank these
  44. organizations for their generous support and energetic interest in the work of
  45. the Society.
