  2. Chinese Academic Network (CANET)
  3. Background and history. CANET was co-initiated by ica (beijing institute for computer application) and university of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1985. 
  4. - first link to csnet was set up in 1986.
  5. - install pmdf/bs2000 on siemens 7760 in 1987.
  6. - "cn" top level domain was registed with ddn src-nic by ica in 1990. 
  7. Techniques
  8. - implement internet dns naming and addressing.
  9. - implement pmdf 3.1 on vax/vms or siemens/bs2000.
  10. - adopt rfc-822 format.
  11. - communication media
  12. --public telephone network
  13. --packet switching data network-chinapac.
  14. - transmission speed : 1200/2400/4800 bps 
  15. -service provided by canet : worldwide e-mail.
  16. Current status
  17. - top level domain -- cn has been operational since jan.1991.
  18. - currently, the international mail deliver takes half a day.
  19. - at present, 16 sites have been connected.
