  7. Minutes of the IP Address Encapsulation Working Group (IPAE)

  9. This meeting of the IPAE Working Group took place on September 24, 1992
  10. in a Video Conference between Mt.  View, CA and Lincoln, MA

  15.   3. Review of Recent Work.
  16.      ICMP
  17.      Reviewed G. Chesson's ICMP extensions.  Decided that an IPAE
  18.      redirect was necessary, but that special Destination unreachable
  19.      was not needed.
  20.      ACTION: Chesson to update work and write up mechanism to map ICMP
  21.      error messages between commonwealths assuming that sender includes
  22.      IPAE header in ICMP error message.

  24.      Reviewed work of previous days addressing meeting.

  71.    ACTION: Steve Deering to write IPAE addressing architecture and
  72.    hold follow addressing sub-group meeting to review writeup.
  73.    Commonwealth Router Discovery
  74.    Concluded that discovery mechanism proposed by John Moy/Proteon
  75.    would be fine.
  76.    ACTION: Hinden to get IP address assigned for Commonwealth router
  77.    discovery.

  79. 4. Close Outstanding Technical Issues
  80.    DNS SUPPORT
  81.    Discussed where changes to DNS would be necessary and which DNS
  82.    servers would have to support IPAE at each stage in the transition.
  83.    ACTION: Crocker to bring DNS experts into loop and write up details
  84.    for document.
  85.    Inter-Commonwealth Routing
  86.    Discussed and concluded that for provider based addressing, use
  87.    BGP4 with support for 96bit IPAE addresses.  Metro based routing
  88.    some what harder.
  89.    ACTION: Deering to write up routing approach.
  90.    ACTION: Hinden to discuss w/Yakov Rekhter about adding support for
  91.    96-bit addresses to BGP4.

  93. 5. Transition Issues
  94.    32-BIT IP Address => Commonwealth Address Mapping
  95.    Discussed different approaches:  Static table, pure DNS, and hybrid
  96.    consisting of background DNS collection to local server + real time
  97.    query by Commonwealth Router to local server.
  98.    ACTION: Hinden to write up static approach.

  100. 6. Implementation Plans and Schedule
  101.    SGI, Proteon, and Sun intend to build prototype IPAE
  102.    implementations.  Minimum test configuration need was:

  122.      Testing can be done with out building any new infrastructure.  It
  123.      can be done using existing internet.
  124.      Implementation subgroup will be formed.  Bob Gilligan agreed to
  125.      lead and coordinate.
