  9. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is the protocol engineering,
  10. development, and standardization arm of the Internet Architecture Board
  11. (IAB). The IETF began in January 1986 as a forum for technical
  12. coordination by contractors for the U.S. Defense Advanced Projects
  13. Agency (DARPA), working on the ARPANET, U.S. Defense Data Network (DDN),
  14. and the Internet core gateway system.  Since that time, the IETF has
  15. grown into a large open international community of network designers,
  16. operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the
  17. Internet protocol architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet.

  19. The IETF mission includes:

  22.   1. Identifying and proposing solutions to pressing operational and
  23.      technical problems in the Internet,
  24.  
  25.   2. Specifying the development (or usage) of protocols and the
  26.      near-term architecture to solve such technical problems for the
  27.      Internet,
  28.  
  29.   3. Making recommendations to the IAB regarding standardization of
  30.      protocols and protocol usage in the Internet,
  31.  
  32.   4. Facilitating technology transfer from the Internet Research Task
  33.      Force (IRTF) to the wider Internet community, and
  34.  
  35.   5. Providing a forum for the exchange of information within the
  36.      Internet community between vendors, users, researchers, agency
  37.      contractors, and network managers.

  40. Technical activity on any specific topic in the IETF is addressed within
  41. working groups.  All working groups are organized roughly by function
  42. into nine technical areas.  Each is led by an Area Director who has
  43. primary responsibility for that one area of IETF activity.  Together

  51. with the Chair of the IETF, these nine technical Directors (plus, a
  52. Director for Standards Procedures) compose the Internet Engineering
  53. Steering Group (IESG).

  77. The IETF has a Secretariat, headquartered at the Corporation for
  78. National Research Initiatives in Reston, Virginia, with the following

  90. The working groups conduct business during plenary meetings of the IETF,
  91. during meetings outside of the IETF, and via electronic mail on mailing
  92. lists established for each group.  The IETF holds 4.5 day plenary
  93. sessions three times a year.  These plenary sessions are composed of
  94. Working Group Sessions, Technical Presentations, Network Status Reports,
  95. working group reporting, and an open IESG meeting.  A Proceedings of
  96. each IETF plenary is published, which includes reports from each Area,
  97. each working group, and each Technical Presentation.  The Proceedings
  98. include a summary of all current standardization activities.

  100. Meeting reports, Charters (which include the working group mailing
  101. lists), and general information on current IETF activities are available
  102. on-line for anonymous FTP from several Internet hosts including
  103. nnsc.nsf.net.

  114.  
  115. Much of the daily work of the IETF is conducted on electronic mailing
  116. lists.  There are mailing lists for each of the working groups, as well
  117. as the IETF mailing lists.   Mail on the working group mailing lists is
  118. expected to be technically relevant to the working groups supported
  119. by that list.   There are two kinds of IETF mailing lists.
  120. 1) IETF General Discussion list and 2) IETF Announcement list.

  133. distributed on the IETF Announcement mailing list.  For general inquiries
