  27.        1       General
  28.
  29.
  30.             Recommendation I.210 describes  the  principles  for  defining
  31.        telecommunication services supported by an ISDN, including the con-
  32.        cept of bearer services, bearer capabilities and teleservices.   It
  33.        also  provides the tools for the definition and description of such
  34.        services.
  35.
  36.             The purpose of this Recommendation is to define a  recommended
  37.        set  of  teleservices to be supported by an ISDN. These definitions
  38.        form the basis for detailed descriptions of teleservices  as  given
  39.        in  Recommendation I.241 which are used to define the network capa-
  40.        bilities required.
  41.
  42.             Teleservices are described by prose definitions  and  descrip-
  43.        tions,  by attributes and by dynamic descriptions, which altogether
  44.        define the service characteristics at a given  access  point  where
  45.        the   customer   accesses  the  service.  Recommendation I.140  and
  46.        Recommendation I.210, Annex C describe the use  of  attributes  for
  47.        this purpose.
  48.
  49.
  50.        2       Definition of teleservices in ISDN
  51.
  52.
  53.             This section defines the teleservices identified so far to  be
  54.        supported  by  an  ISDN.  Additional  teleservices  are for further
  55.        study.
  56.
  57.             The definition of teleservices  is  based  upon  the  list  of
  58.        attributes given in Recommendation I.210, Annex C.
  59.
  60.             The higher layer attribute values (i.e. the layer 4 to 7  pro-
  61.        tocol  functions  and  "type  of  user  information") the low layer
  62.        attribute values (i.e., the information  transfer  attributes,  the
  63.        access  attributes  and the general attributes) are the recommended
  64.

  68.
  69.
  70.
  71.
  72.
  73.        functions for teleservices. The "type of user  information"  attri-
  74.        bute  is  considered the only dominant attribute. The value of this
  75.        attribute is the same as the  service  name  used  in  the  E-  and
  76.        F-series  Recommendations for the particular service being provided
  77.        in ISDN.
  78.
  79.             The information  transfer  and  access  attribute  values  for
  80.        teleservices  given  in  the  service descriptions are the proposed
  81.        values when using the circuit-mode and packet-mode bearer capabili-
  82.        ties  of the ISDN. For the case of telephony, only the circuit-mode
  83.        is to be used. Implementations using alternative low  layer  attri-
  84.        bute values are permitted but are for further study. From a service
  85.        interworking perspective it is desirable that the possible combina-
  86.        tions  of values of the low layer attributes of teleservices be the
  87.        same as the bearer capabilities of the bearer services  defined  in
  88.        I.230-series of Recommendations.
  89.
  90.
  91.             The following teleservices have been identified so far  to  be
  92.        supported by an ISDN:
  93.
  94.                I.241.1         Telephony
  95.
  96.                I.241.2         Teletex
  97.
  98.                I.241.3         Telefax 4
  99.
  100.                I.241.4         Mixed mode
  101.
  102.                I.241.5         Videotex
  103.
  104.                I.241.6         Telex
  105.
  106.             The prose descriptions  (step  1.1)  and  static  descriptions
  107.        (step 1.2) of these services are given in Recommendation I.241. The
  108.        common dynamic description (step 1.3) for  demand  bearer  services
  109.        given in Recommendation  I.220 is also applicable to teleservices.
  110.
  111.             Note  - Prose descriptions for mixed mode, Videotex and  telex
  112.        are not yet included.
  113.
  114.
  115.        3       Recommended support of teleservices
  116.
  117.
  118.             In order to facilitate the development of compatible ISDNs and
  119.        related  user  equipment,  Recommendation I.241 outlines the recom-
  120.        mended support of teleservices defined in this Recommendation. This
  121.        outline consists of two parts:
  122.
  123.                a)            description  of  the  overall  support  of  a
  124.        teleservice by its dominant attribute value, i.e., the value of the
  125.        high layer attribute: type of  user  information.  The  recommended
  126.        overall support of a teleservice is described as:
  127.
  128.                E         an essential teleservice  to  be  made  available
  129.        internationally;
  130.
  131.
  132.
  133.
  134.
  135.
  136.
  137.
  138.
  139.                A         an additional teleservice which may be  available
  140.        in some ISDNs, and which may also be available internationally;
  141.
  142.                FS         the recommended support of this  teleservice  is
  143.        for further study,
  144.
  145.                b)         with each  teleservice,  a  description  of  the
  146.        agreed  non-dominant  attributes,  e.g. values  of  the  high layer
  147.        attributes: layer 4 to 7 protocol functions. If  an  ISDN  supports
  148.        the  teleservice,  the  recommended  support of the values of these
  149.        secondary  attribute  combinations  within  this   teleservice   is
  150.        described as:
  151.
  152.                E          an essential combination of attribute values  to
  153.        be  made  available internationally (when an ISDN supports the par-
  154.        ticular teleservice);
  155.
  156.                A          an additional combination  of  attribute  values
  157.        which  may be available in some ISDNs, and which may also be avail-
  158.        able internationally (when an ISDN supports the particular teleser-
  159.        vice);
  160.
  161.                FS         the recommended support of this  combination  of
  162.        attributes is for further study.
  163.
  164.             Note  - During an evolutionary period, not  all  items  marked
  165.        "E" will be provided in all networks.
  166.
  167.             The recommended overall support of teleservices  as  given  in
  168.        Recommendation I.241 is summarized in Table 1/I.240.

  291.        a) It is anticipated that ISDNs will offer  telephony  as  a  basic
  292.        telecommunication  service.  Some  networks  will  offer  this as a
  293.        teleservice.  However, due to national  regulation  policies,  some
  294.        networks  will offer telephony as a bearer service rather than as a
  295.        teleservice.

  484.
  485.                a)         Originating the service (call set-up)
  486.
  487.                 The service is originated by the originating user activat-
  488.        ing  the terminal, performing service selection (if applicable) for
  489.        the originating terminal, and terminating customer selection.  Dur-
  490.        ing  this process the originating user is given appropriate indica-
  491.        tions as to the state of the call.
  492.
  493.                i)          A  service   selection   is   required   on   a
  494.        multi-service terminal.
  495.
  496.                ii)         Terminating customer selection is selecting the
  497.        required   termination  (user/network  interface) by an appropriate
  498.        means [for example, the use of direct-dialling-in (DDI), or  multi-
  499.        ple subscriber number].
  500.
  501.                iii)          Indications  during  call   origination   may
  502.        include an indication that the network is ready to receive the net-
  503.        work address information (proceed  indication)  and  an  indication
  504.        that  the call is progressing through the network. It shall be pos-
  505.        sible to have audible indications which may be accompanied by other
  506.        indications.
  507.
  508.                b)         Call acceptance (answer)
  509.
  510.                Selection of the terminating customer is indicated to  each
  511.        user  by  appropriate  indications  (  call  arrival indication and
  512.        awaiting answer indication ). The acceptance of  the  call  by  the
  513.        terminating user, i.e. answer, causes the indications to be removed
  514.        and bidirectional communication paths to be provided. The  call  is
  515.        now termed in the "speech phase".
  516.
  517.                c)         Call release
  518.
  519.                A request to terminate the  service  may  be  generated  by
  520.        either  user.  If one user terminates the service the other user is
  521.        given an appropriate indication as to the state of the call.

  539.        overlap sending (see Recommendations I.451 and I.220);
  540.
  541.                ii)         user inputting a  non  valid  network  address,

  552.                Note   - In  support   of   some   supplementary   services
  553.        (e.g. call  waiting,  line hunting), it may optionally be necessary
  554.        for  the  subscriber  to  register   some   additional   parameters
  555.        (e.g. destination  number used to distinguish PSTN telephony calls)
  556.        with the network to allow the network to know  when  a  channel  is
