  13.
  14.             The line code shall be 2B1Q (2 binary, 1 quaternary). This  is
  15.        a 4-level code and is used without redundancy.
  16.
  17.             The bit stream entering the NT1 from the interface  at  refer-
  18.        ence point T (or entering the LT from the ET) shall be grouped into
  19.        pairs of bits for conversion to quaternary symbols that are  called
  20.        quats.  Figure II-1/G.961  shows  the  relationship  of the bits in
  21.        the B and D channels to quats. The B- and D-channel bits are scram-
  22.        bled  before  coding.  M1through M6 bits of the CL channel are also
  23.        paired, coded and scrambled in the same way.

  304.             The CRC bits are the M5and M6bits in frames 3 through 8 of the
  305.        multiframe.  The  CRC is an error detection code that shall be gen-
  306.        erated from the appropriate bits in  the  multiframe  and  inserted
  307.        into  the bit stream by the transmitter. At the receiver a CRC cal-
  308.        culated from the same bits shall be compared  with  the  CRC  value

  325.             The Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) code shall be computed using
  326.        the polynomial:
  327.
  328.                                  P (x ) = x 12
  329.                                         O

  346.        where
  347.
  348.                O +  = modulo 2 summation.
  349.
  350.
  351.             One method of generating the CRC code for a  given  multiframe
  352.        is  illustrated  in  Figure II-4/G.961.  At the beginning of a mul-
  353.        tiframe all register cells are cleared. The multiframe bits  to  be
  354.        covered  by  the  CRC  are then clocked into the generator from the
  355.        left. During bits which are not covered by the CRC  (FW,  IFW,  M1,
  356.        M2,  M3,  M5,  M6)  the state of the CRC generator is frozen and no
  357.        change in state of any of the stages takes place.  After  the  last
  358.        multiframe  bit  to  be covered by the CRC is clocked into register
  359.        cell 1, the 12 register cells contain the CRC code of the next mul-
  360.        tiframe.  Between  this  point  and  the beginning of the next mul-
  361.        tiframe, the register cell contents are stored for transmisssion in
  362.        the  CRC field of the next multiframe. Notice that bit CRC1 resides
  363.        in register cell 12, CRC2 in register cell 11, etc.
  364.
  365.             Note  - The binary ONEs and ZEROs from the interface at the  T
  366.        reference  point,  and  corresponding bits from the network (across
  367.        the V1reference point), must be treated as binary ONEs  and  ZEROs,
  368.        respectively, for the computation of the CRC.

  388.
  389.
  390.             A number of transceiver operations and  maintenance  functions
  391.        are  handled  by M4,  M5, and M6 bits in the multiframe. These bits
  392.        are defined in the following paragraphs.
  393.
  394.
  395.        II.8.3.2.1  Far end block error (FEBE)  bit
  396.
  397.
  398.             A single bit in each multiframe is allocated to  carrying  the
  399.        Far End Block Error (FEBE) bit. The FEBE bit shall be set to ONE if
  400.        there are no CRC errors in the multiframe  and  ZERO  if  the  mul-
  401.        tiframe  contains  a CRC error. The FEBE bit shall be placed in the
  402.        next available outgoing multiframe and transmitted back to the ori-
  403.        ginator.  The  FEBE  bits may be monitored to determine the perfor-
  404.        mance of the far end receiver.
  405.
  406.
  407.        II.8.3.2.2  The act bit
  408.
  409.
  410.             The act bit is the M4bit in the  first  frame  of  multiframes
  411.        transmitted by either transceiver. The act bit is used as a part of
  412.        the start-up sequence to communicate readiness for layer 2 communi-
  413.        cation progress (see S II.10.5).
  414.
  415.
  416.        II.8.3.2.3  The DEA Bit
  417.
  418.
  419.             The DEA bit is the M4bit in the second  frame  of  multiframes
  420.        transmitted from the LT (see S II.3 and Figure II-3/G.961). The DEA
  421.        bit is used by the LT to communicate to the NT1  its  intention  to
  422.        deactivate (see S II.10.1.5.2). To permit reliable detection of the
  423.        DEA  bit  when  indicating  the  intention   to   deactivate,   its
  424.        corresponding  status  (binary  ZERO) shall be transmitted in three
  425.        successive multiframes before terminating transmission of signal.

1265.        activation/deactivation  requests,  indicators  of  activation  and
1266.        deactivation, and indicators of errors. The transmission system  is
1267.        capable of loopbacks but these are not illustrated by examples. The
1268.        transmission system is also  capable  of  being  activated  without
1269.        activating  the interface at reference point T. There are no provi-

  1283.
1284.             The following definitions are for the  purpose  of  clarifying
1285.        requirements that are to follow:
  1286.
  1287.                1)          Start-up:   |   process  characterized   by   a
1288.        sequence  of  signals  produced  by the LT and by the NT1. Start-up
1289.        results in establishment of the master-slave mode, i.e., synchroni-
1290.        zation  of  the  receivers  and the training of equalizers and echo
1291.        cancelers to the point that two-way transmission  requirements  are
  1292.        met.
  1293.
1294.                2)         Warm start:  | he start-up process that  applies
1295.        to  transceivers  meeting  the  optional warm-start activation-time
1296.        requirements after they have once been synchronized and have subse-
1297.        quently  responded  to  a  deactivation request. Warm start applies
1298.        only if there have been no  changes  in  line  characteristics  and
1299.        equipment.  Transceivers  that  meet  warm-start  requirements  are
  1300.        called warm-start transceivers.
  1301.
  1302.                3)         Cold-start:  | he start-up process that  applies
1303.        to  transceivers  that  either  do  not  meet  optional  warm-start
1304.        activation-time requirements, or have not been  continuously  in  a
1305.        deactive  state  that  resulted  from a deactivation request to the
1306.        NT1. Cold start also applies if there have  been  changes  in  line
1307.        characteristics  or  equipment  or  both. A cold start shall always
1308.        start from the RESET state.
  1309.
  1310.                4)         Cold-start-only  | CSO): NT1  transceivers  that
1311.        do  not  meet optional warm-start activation-time requirements (see
  1312.        S II.10.6) are called cold-start-only transceivers.
  1313.
1314.                5)          Reset:   |  he  reset  state  consists  of  two
1315.        sub-states:  the  receive reset and the full reset states. In other
1316.        sections of this Recommendation, the term reset is used to refer to
  1317.        the full reset state.
  1318.
1319.                Reset has no implications about the state of convergence of
1320.        the  equalizer  or  echo  canceler coefficients of the transceiver.
1321.        The reset states are  applicable  to  cold-start-only  as  well  as
  1322.        warm-start transceivers.
  1323.
1324.                For specific transceiver implementations, reset states  (or
1325.        sub-states)  may  mean  different  and  possibly  multiple internal
  1326.        states.
  1327.
1328.                6)         Full Reset:  | he full reset  state  is  one  in
1329.        which  a  transceiver  has  detected  the  loss  of signal from the
1330.        far-end and is not transmitting (sending signal to the loop).
  1331.
1332.                The full  reset  state  shall  also  be  entered  following
  1333.        power-up.
  1334.
1335.                While in full reset, NT1s may initiate transmission only to
1336.        request  service.  Under  all other conditions, where the interface

1347.        not start transmitting any signal until the NT1 has received the TL
  1348.        signal from the network.
  1349.
1350.                7)         Receive reset:  | he receive reset  state  is  a
1351.        transient  state in  which NT1 has detected the loss of signal from
1352.        the far-end and is not transmitting (sending signal  to  the  loop)
1353.        and,  in  addition,  is  not  permitted  to  initiate  the start-up
1354.        sequence (send wake-up tone) but shall be capable of responding  to
1355.        the  start-up sequence (detecting wake-up tone). An NT1 must remain
1356.        in this state for at least  40 ms,  after  detecting  the  loss  of
1357.        received  signal,  as specified in S II.10.1.5.2 and II.10.2, after
1358.        which time, the transceiver shall enter the full reset state.

3898.             The linear digital filter input ("Quaternary  Input  Data"  in

  4574.        III.10  Activation/deactivation
  4575.
  4576.
4577.             The  guidelines  taken  into  account  in  the  definition  of
4578.        activation/deactivation procedures can be summarized as follows:
  4579.
4580.                -         In the deactivated state, no signal is present on
  4581.        the line.
  4582.
4583.                -         During activation appropriate signals are sent to
4584.        speed  up  the convergence of the equalizer, the bit and frame syn-
4585.        chronization and the echo canceller convergence.
  4586.
4587.             A master/slave relationship is assumed between LT and NT1,  so
4588.        that, even if NT1 starts to request an activation, it is always the
4589.        LT (under the ET acknowledgment), that assumes  the  initiative  of
4590.        continuing the procedure and then the transmission.
  4591.
  4592.
4593.             The system will support the activation of both  the  transmis-
4594.        sion  system and the interface at T reference point, the activation
4595.        of the transmission system only,  interface,  the  deactivation  of
4596.        both the transmission system and the interface at T reference point
4597.        or of the interface at T reference point only.
  4598.
4599.             Cold and warm activations are possible. Cold activation starts
4600.        after  the  power  off - power on transition or after some specific
4601.        maintenance procedures. Cold start refers to NT1 and  LT  which  do
4602.        not   have   stored   any  information  about  the  echo  canceller

4612.        coefficients or equalizers setting, so a long time  for  activation
4613.        is  expected.  Warm  activation  apply when LT and NT1 contain full
4614.        information about the echo  canceller  coefficients  and  the  line
4615.        equalizers setting, so a short activation time is expected.
  4616.
4617.             Power down mode refers to a state with very low power consump-
4618.        tion  of  both  LT and NT1 and with the absence of any line signal,
4619.        this state allows to statistically reduce the  power  feeding  from
4620.        the central office. Of course some parts of the system, in particu-
4621.        lar the receiving sections, are always active to detect the  incom-

4812.        is started from an Activation request (FE1) coming from the ET.  LT
4813.        starts  the  procedure with an FE2 to ET and transmitting (IU12) on
4814.        the line. At the reception of (IU11) from NT1, LT transmits  (IU22)
4815.        towards  NT1.  (IU22) is used by the NT1 for line equalizer setting
4816.        (only for cold starts),  fast  timing  recovery  and  AMI  decision
4817.        threshold  setting.  Once that NT1 finished its training procedure,
4818.        it transmits towards LT (IU21). This SIG is used  by  LT  for  line
4819.        equalizer setting (only cold starts),
  4820.
  4821.
4822.             timing recovery and AMI decision thresholds setting.  Then  LT
4823.        transmits  (IU4) which is used by the NT1 for echo canceller updat-
4824.        ing (short  training  period  for  warm  starts,  longer  for  cold
4825.        starts).  At the end of this training period, NT1 sends (IU3) which
4826.        is used by LT for the same purposes just  explained  for  the  NT1.
4827.        Whenever  all  the  training  periods  are  over,  LT  sends  (IU6)
4828.        (operative B and D channels) in which the I bits of the CL  channel
  4829.        carry   FE1  command.  NT1  answers  with  (IU5)  (operative B  and
