- Two days ago I installed bash 1.12. It seems to work fine, but then I
- linked /bin/sh with bash, and I typed sh. Within seconds I got the
- repeated message:
- NOTICE: File table overflow
- I was not able to stop the program (bash). I stopped Windows,
- but I kept getting this message.
- I lost control of the computer so I pushed the reset button. By that time
- a whole file system was ruined and the root file system was severely damaged.
-
- This type of error is not typical for memory, HD or controller problem.
- I am not sure that I have fully recovered from this disaster. I have had
- in the past problems with HD or memory, but nothing like that.
- This raises the possibility of a virus in one of the public domain
- programs distributed by the GNU or X11 people. (the only outside sources
- or programs). I am in particular very suspicious of bash under SCO unix.
- I am going to search for other possibilities. But the association with bash
- and the atypical response of the system maid me raise this question
-
- bash was compiled with gcc2.3.4.1
