  40. This report describes the internal structure of
  41. facilities added to the
  42. 4.2BSD version of the UNIX operating system for
  43. the VAX,
  44. as modified in the 4.3BSD release.
  45. The system facilities provide
  46. a uniform user interface to networking
  47. within UNIX.  In addition, the implementation 
  48. introduces a structure for network communications which may be
  49. used by system implementors in adding new networking
  50. facilities.  The internal structure is not visible
  51. to the user, rather it is intended to aid implementors
  52. of communication protocols and network services by
  53. providing a framework which
  54. promotes code sharing and minimizes implementation effort.

  56. The reader is expected to be familiar with the C programming
  57. language and system interface, as described in the
  58. \fIBerkeley Software Architecture Manual, 4.3BSD Edition\fP [Joy86].

  60. communication concepts is assumed; where required
  61. any additional ideas are introduced.

  64. provides a description of the system internals,
  65. avoiding, when possible, those portions which are utilized only
  66. by the interprocess communication facilities.
