  1. SET MAIL-DIRECTORY directory  -  define where mail files should be kept
  2. Usually:           ~ (tilde)
  3.  
  4. The MAIL-DIRECTORY variable defines the name of the directory in which
  5.   to keep your primary mail-file and related files.  The default is
  6.   ~ (tilde), your home directory. 
  7.  
  8. The commands COPY, EXAMINE, GET, MOVE, WRITE and SAVE-DRAFT, and the variable 
  9.   SAVED-MESSAGES-FILE, all use the MAIL-DIRECTORY variable to determine the 
  10.   directory (unless you state otherwise).

  12. (The commands LIST and TAKE, the FCC header, the control-b command in text
  13.   mode, among others, use the current working directory as shown by the
  14.   PWD command.)
