  5. NOTE:      Please read this entire file before installing Roids,
  6.     lest you make a mistake you might regret.

  9. I.  Description
  10.  
  11.   Roids is an arcade-style space demolition game for the OS/2
  12.   Presentation Manager.  Fly your spaceship around blasting
  13.   Bad Guys and hapless chunks of rock into nothingness.  Very
  14.   socially redeeming stuff, but hey, it's fun!

  17. II. Installation
  18.  
  19.   A. A Note to Current Users:
  20.  
  21.   DON'T DELETE THE OLD ROIDS.INI FILE!  The new version will
  22.   work with the old ROIDS.INI file, although some options may
  23.   be reset due to changes in how they are stored.
  24.  
  25.   B. All Users:
  26.  
  27.   Go to the source directory where INSTALL.CMD and all the other
  28.   Roids 2.3 files are located. Run INSTALL.CMD, and tell it where
  29.   you want to put Roids 2.3.
  30.  
  31.   For example, if Roids 2.1b was in the C:\OS2\GAMES\ROIDS
  32.   subdirectory and you want to replace it with Roids 2.3, type:
  33.  
  34.   INSTALL C:\OS2\GAMES\ROIDS
  35.  
  36.   from an OS/2 session to install the game.  If the directory you
  37.   specify doesn't exist, INSTALL will create it.

  40. III. Troubleshooting
  41.  
  42.   First of all, sloppy MMPM drivers are the single most common
  43.   cause of problems with Roids.  Symptoms of sloppy drivers
  44.   include:
  45.  
  46.   A.  HORRIBLE performance.
  47.   B.  Roids quits for no apparent reason.
  48.   C.  The game just sits there for a while, and the resumes.
  49.   D.  OS/2 crashes.
  50.  
  51.   If you're having trouble with Roids and MMPM, try turning off
  52.   the sound effects.  This will at least let you play the game
  53.   until you can get your hands on some newer sound card drivers
  54.   from the manufacturer.  If you're using a Sound Blaster card,
  55.   there are some new drivers out which are fantastic.  They're
  56.   available on CompuServe and the Creative Labs BBS.
  57.  
  58.   Consult the on-line help for more information about MMPM
  59.   problems.

  61.   If Roids starts behaving strangely or stops working, and MMPM
  62.   isn't the cause, there are a few things you can try:
  63.  
  64.   A.  In the Options menu, select "Defaults".  This resets the
  65.       ROIDS.INI file.
  66.  
  67.   B.  If that fails, delete the ROIDS.INI file.  The file will
  68.       be recreated next time you run Roids.
  69.  
  70.       BE CAREFUL!  If your copy of Roids is registered (and I
  71.       certainly hope it is!), make sure you write down your name
  72.       and User ID EXACTLY as they appear in the Product
  73.       information dialog.  Once the ROIDS.INI file has been
  74.       deleted, your registration information will be lost.
  75.       Re-enter your name and User ID in the Register dialog the
  76.       next time you play.
  77.  
  78.   C.  And if THAT fails, ROIDS.EXE is probably corrupted.
  79.       Re-install it or get another copy somehow.  The latest
  80.       version is usually available on CompuServe.

  82.   If you're getting errors regarding the Help system, make sure
  83.   that ROIDS.HLP is in the Roids Working directory (see above).

  100.   This game took many months and cost many hundreds of dollars
  101.   to  write.  If you find yourself enjoying this game, please
  102.   register it.  Don't think that it's not worth registering
  103.   because it's "just a game".

  121.       work on all future versions of Roids, so all upgrades

  126.     - A clear conscience.
  127.     - Assurance that Hungry Man Productions will be able to
  128.       continue writing games.

  130.     If you live outside the United States, the best way to
  131.     register is to send a money order (in U.S. funds) or
  132.     equivalent.  It really doesn't matter, as long as it can be
  133.     converted to U.S. dollars.  The Postal Service frowns on
  134.     sending cash through the mail, but I won't tell . . .
