-
- This is one of three sets of tiles which can be used in Nels Anderson's
- Mahjongg 3.3 game. (I strongly urge you to register with him for that
- wonderful game if you have not done so already).
-
- All three sets are based loosely on medieval shields and heraldric devices.
- Those who are knowledgeable in the arcane art and lore of heraldry will note
- some variations from 'official' heraldric practice. But who cares? Without
- claiming total accuracy, I will give the heraldric description of some of the
- tiles.
-
- The tiles are arranged as follows:
-
- Tiles 1 - 9 (dots) shields which are divided into four parts by a cross
- and colored variously. [quarterly gules, a cross argent]
- 10 (white dragon) All the dragons are basically a black
- shield with a wide bar bordered by two smaller bars running
- diagonally. The color of the wide bar corresponds to the
- dragon's color. [sable, a bend sinister argent between two
- cotises argent]
- 11 - 19 (bamboo) shields with a chevron and three crosses. [e.g.
- gules, a chevron argent between three crosses-crosslet of
- the second]
- 20 (green dragon) like #10 except the band is green
- 21 - 29 (characters) a set of shields each of which is divided into
- 4 parts, but using two different colors. In addition there
- is a smaller version of a shield centered on the shield.
- 30 (red dragon) like #10 except with a red band
-
- 31 - 34 (winds) 4 shields with smaller shields. The smaller
- shields are quartered (party per saltire) with one of the
- parts being a different color, corresponding to a direction.
-
- 35 - 38 (seasons) a set of shields each with a large tree as the
- basic decoration. The trees represent the various seasons
- depending on the colors.
-
- 39 - 42 (flowers) a set of tiles with a fleur-de-lys with different
- borders
