  1.      Long ago, humans began colonizing
  2. nearby star systems. Ships would travel
  3. to neighboring systems in search of
  4. planets for colonization. When a suitable
  5. planet was found, it was colonized. Other
  6. races were eventually encountered. Some
  7. were friendlier than others. But none
  8. posed a major threat to mankind.
  9.  
  10.      Expansion continued unchallenged until
  11. a scout ship sent to one prospective
  12. system was attacked and destroyed. This
  13. star system was the domain of the Hortax,
  14. a xenophobic race. Somewhat superior to
  15. humans in strength, intellect, and
  16. technology. Aggressive and violent, the
  17. Hortax saw humans as pests to be
  18. exterminated.
  19.  
  20.      Soon after the loss of the scout ship,
  21. numerous human systems in the area were
  22. attacked by the Hortax. Hopelessly
  23. outmatched, many human systems fell in a
  24. short period of time.
  25.  
  26.      Now only a few human systems remain.
  27. Human losses at the start were staggering.
  28. Much of the human's space defense capability
  29. was destroyed in early unsuccessful attempts
  30. to stop the Hortax fleets.
  31.  
  32.      As losses continued to mount, the
  33. humans began to hire mercenary space pilots
  34. to help stop the Hortax. Soon after, the
  35. first mercenary squadrons were formed,
  36. and joined in the battle against the
  37. Hortax. As the Hortax advanced deeper and
  38. deeper into human space, the scope of the
  39. conflict grew to cover many quadrants.
  40. Eventually entire wings of mercenary
  41. squadrons supplemented the regular human
  42. space defense forces.

  44.      The addition of the mercenary squadrons
  45. helped slow the Hortax advance. Now the
  46. humans are desprately trying to hang on
  47. to the few systems they have left, and
  48. regain lost systems.
  49.  
  50.      The mercenary squadrons are deployed
  51. at bases all along the front. As a pilot
  52. in a mercenary squadron, you will be
  53. stationed at one of these forward bases.
  54. You will fly combat missions against the
  55. Hortax. The extent of the domain of the
  56. Hortax is not known, but it is believed
  57. to be quite large.
  58.  
  59.      Your commanding officer will be
  60. Commander 20, a half human with a long
  61. and illustrious career in the human space
  62. defense forces. He has been assigned to
  63. command MSW (Mercenary Squadron Wing) Gamma.
  64. Mercenary squadron wings Beta, Delta, and
  65. Gamma have been selected to spearhead the
  66. human's last ditch counter-offensive.
  67. Needless to say, success is critical at
  68. this dark hour...
