  4.               I.   I N T R O D U C T I O N

  6. SPIDER is a particularly challenging double-deck solitaire.  Unlike most
  7. solitaires, it provides extraordinary opportunities for the skillful player
  8. to overcome bad luck in the deal by means of careful analysis and complex
  9. manipulations.  The SPIDER program does not actually play the game for you,
  10. but rather takes the place of the cards (by displaying the tableau on the
  11. screen) and keeping a record of the game so that you can follow out long
  12. lines of play without losing track of where you started from.  (Besides, it's
  13. a neat display hack.)

  15. Section II of this documentation describes the rules of the game; section III
  16. describes the use of the program; section IV gives some "Spider problems" to
  17. provide a feel for the complexity that can arise (the problems are based on
  18. positions that arose in actual play).
