  12.                            Commonly know as AUTOVON

  17.    AUTOVON is the Military Voice Communications System. Each Military
  18. Installation has it's own prefix for use in the AUTOVON system. Not all
  19. telephones on military installation have the capability to call another
  20. military installation via AUTOVON. However, they can all receive an AUTOVON
  21. call coming from another installation.
  22.    A different 3-number prefix is used when dialing a military base using
  23. AUTOVON than the prefix used when dialing through the civilian phone system.
  24. Usually, AUTOVON is accessed by dialing 8 or 88 and waiting for a dial tone(on
  25. any phone connected to the AUTOVON system). A phone call made in this manner
  26. is
  27. limited to "ROUTINE" Priority.
  28.    There are "ROUTINE","IMMEDIATE", "FLASH", and "FLASH OVERRIDE" priorities,
  29. with ROUTINE being the lowest and FLASH OVERRIDE the highest To dial higher
  30. priority phone calls than routine, access to Technical control equipment is
  31. normally needed.
  32.    Calling AUTOVON exchanges might (most likely will) need a small phone
  33. modification. This modification is known as a "SILVER BOX".
