  8.      Well, many people have asked me "how do i use Telenet".."how do i use an ou
  9. tdial". Well i have decided to write a very basic file on telenet and how to get
  10.  around on the networks.
  11.  
  12.      Well Telenet and others are PSN's or (Packet Switching Networks) these nets
  13.  are connected to many other net
  14. works around the world.  You can do alot with ju
  15. st basic knowledge that i have (most of you will know this and way beyond what i
  16.  know but some will benefit from it) i will start with some of the terms that ar
  17. e often used with these services.
  18.  
  19. Access Number- The direct number that you dial to access a network (duh).
  20.  
  21. Nua (Network Users Address) - An Nua is basicly a number you type in to access t
  22. hat particular service think of an Nua as a phone number sorta its not an actual
  23. ly phone number with an Acn c
  24. ountry code or whatever because the service is conn
  25. ected to the network world wide.  I hope that was fairly clear let me show this
  26. think of the planet earth as an network and  to reach the services on the planet
  27.  you call the phone number like the service is a persons residence or business p
  28. hone or payphone whatever just like on a network an Nua is the Address to a syst
  29. em or outdial whatever on the particular network. I hope this is clear or atleas
  30. t somewhat understood.

  32. Nui (Network User Identification
  33. ) - An Nui is like a Account and Password to the
  34.  network like an account and password is to a bbs that lets you access the syste
  35. m.  Some people use Nui for like anything like an Vax system Unix systems they a
  36. re referring to an Nui as basicly a account on the particular system that lets y
  37. ou use the system.
  38.  
  39. DNIC (Data Network Identification Code) - The DNIC is like a 4 digit code that r
  40. epresents what Psn it is think of an DNIC like an AreaCode and the Nua the indiv
  41. idual phone number.
  42.  
  43. Outdial - Is basi
  44. cly what it says an modem port connected somewhere on the netwo
  45. rk that will allow you to dial out from and connect data only to a actually phon
  46. e number not an Nua.
  47.  
  48. Pad (Packet Assemble Disassembler) - an x.25 pad is very useful an pad using x.2
  49. 5. protocal transmits at 9600 bps to an Nua. This may sound funny but i call the
  50. m "Launch Pads" heh like with an x.25 you can usally access any Nua on the plane
  51. t by usally typing the Dnic+Nua.

  55.        Now i will explain various things and give helpful ideas.

  60.      Let me start off with some helpful things for you to try and do.
  61.  
  62.                                  TeleNet
  63.  
  64.  
  65.      The first thing your going to have to have is your Access number it is very
  66.  easy to get your local access number.  Simply call telenet at 1-800-TELENET tha
  67. t is thier customer service number and ask for your dialup the operator will ask
  68.  for your area code and prefix of your phone number he/she will also ask your ba
  69. ud rate.  There are many telenet ports across the country and internatio
  70. nly with
  71.  varying baud rates from 110 bps (yuck) to 9600 (i wish i had) so you will want
  72. your maximum baud port most locations have atleast 1200 many have 2400 and not a
  73. lot have 9600 ports like for big cities like Detroit and Los Angeles at the end
  74. of the file i will list some useful numbers.
  75. Some things to do while online with Telenet and Tymnet.  While at the @ on the T
  76. elenet system type "mail" or "C mail" or "telemail" or even "c telemail" this ac
  77. cess's telenets mail system simple entitled "Telemail"
  78. from there it will ask "u
  79. ser name" or something like that type "phones" next it will prompt you "password
  80. " enter "phones".  The phones service has alot of worthy information it will giv
  81. e you a menu to choose from the rest should be self explanatory.  Along with the
  82.  other information on the phones service there is a complete updated list of all
  83.  Telenet access numbers which is conveinent.  Once you have tried the phones ser
  84. vice also on telemail enter "Intl/Associates" as the user name and "Intl" for th
  85.  
  86. e international access numbers.  If you are calling from overseas somewhere conn
  87. ect with an telenet access number then type this Nua at the telenet @ prompt "31
  88. 1020200142" and enter the username and password.
  89. You might want to pick up a sort of a reference booklet on Telenet simply again
  90. call the customer service number and ask them for "How to use Telenet's Asychron
  91. us Dial Service" and give them your address which is self explanatory.
  92. Another tidbit of info you would like to know if you already didnt kn
  93. ow that Tel
  94. enet is owned by Us Sprint long distance service.

  99.                                Tymnet
  100.  
  101.      The same goes for Tymnet service you will first need an Access Number.  Sim
  102. ply call Tymnet customer service at 1-800-872-7654 and ask them.  Again you migh
  103. t like to get Tymnets reference booklet on how to use there system simply again
  104. ask them to send it to you.  Once online with a Tymnet access number type "Infor
  105. mation" at the user name prompt and you will be connected to another nice thing
  106. on t
  107. ymnet which you have access to all thier Access Numbers also just like the "
  108. phones" service on Telenet.  Tymnet is owned by "Mcdowell Douglas" corporation.
  109.  Unlike Telenet where a long distance company owns the network.  On Tymnet in th
  110. e "Information" service there is a very cool option that will provide you with a
  111. ll the Dnic's (Networks) available from Tymnet.  You may also want to get that o
  112. n buffer but for your conveinience i will include a copy of that.  The file "Bas
  113. ic.NetworksII" is the complete
  114. listing and i would like the Basic.NetworksII fil
  115. e to be accompanied by this file for the most part.

  119.                             Outdials
  120.  
  121.      Now i will discuss Outdials and tell how to use them.  An Outdial on Telene
  122. t is an Pcp Port usally.  It will enable you to connect data with a carrier.  An
  123.  Outdial is a modem connected up to the network to access the outdial spimply ty
  124. pe the outdials Nua.  Usally you will need a Nui or Pad to use an Outdial on Tel
  125. enet just to let you know.  Once connected to
  126.  an Outdial on Telenet type "Ctrl-e
  127. " to get into the command mode of the Outdial or if your sharp on your Hayes mod
  128. em AT command set just issue the commands thru the Outdial besure to type "Atz"
  129. when logged in to reset the modem parameters to default values.  Outdials range
  130. from different baud rates just like what kind of modem is hooked into the Outdia
  131. l port.  This is the basic Telenet Outdial but there are many types a Tymnet Asy
  132. chronus is a very good Outdial to use like i said there are many differen
  133. t types
  134.  the above is for Telenet Pcp Outdials which are used most widely.

  137.                         Scanning Telenet
  138.  
  139.  
  140.      Well now i will explain how to scan telenet and how to find Pcp outdials et
  141. c.  When scanning telenet call your Access Number and at the prompt enter the Nu
  142. a.  Plan to scan a certain amount of Nua's in a session wether the number is up
  143. to you, usally when i scan i scan in blocks of 100 you can find alot of things w
  144. hile scanning.  I will tell how to find pcp outdials, first if your l
  145. ooking for
  146. a particular area code for the outdial take the 313 area code for example usally
  147.  an outdial is in the first 150 numbers scanned so i would suggest if scanning f
  148. or outdials scan like this..the area code for which you want the outdial two 0's
  149.  then a three digit number so the scan would look like this...31300001,31300002,
  150. 31300003 etc.. im sure you get it...along the way you will probably find other n
  151. eat things.  Some things to know when scanning telenet is when you enter an Nua
  152. and it freezes l
  153. ike wont do anything send a break signal, for me i use Proterm f
  154. or the Apple the break signal is open-apple b once the break signal is sent it s
  155. hould go back to a @ prompt again.  If you try scanning another nua directly aft
  156. er you broke out from the frozen portion Telenet will give you an error message
  157. "Connection Pending" which means it is still looking for the Nua system from whi
  158. ch you requested previously.  To remedy this situation after the break signal is
  159.  sent type "d" for disconnect it will then
  160. tell you the connection has been term
  161. inated. Proceed scanning the Nua continuing where you left off. (Note. you will
  162. get the freeze and have to repeat the sequence over and over again as of there a
  163. re A LOT of Nuas that freeze) Well i bet your asking "how do i know when ive fou
  164. nd an outdial?" usally Telenet will respond with a connect message and then noth
  165. ing try to type "Atz" if it responds "ok" then you have a Outdial port where as
  166. Atz is the hayes modem command for reseting the modems paramaters to de
  167. fault set
  168. tings.  Ok now i will explain some things to look for and some wise things to do
  169.  while scanning and also supply an response key explanations.
  170. Whenever you "Connected" to an Nua write it down no matter what it is make notes
  171.  of what you find and label them for instance if you encounter any of these mess
  172. ages.
  173.  
  174.    User Name = a Vax System
  175.    Login = a Unix system
  176.    Primenet = a prime system
  177.    Password = something worth noting
  178.  
  179. Basicly anything that connects take note of this is very useful for fi
  180. nding syst
  181. ems to hack on even though most or all of Telenet has been scanned at one time o
  182. r another there are always somethings to do! that is a FACT!  Be sure to write d
  183. own all "Refused Collect Connection" also because we must not forget that when w
  184. e request an Nua that we are asking for a collect call all Nuas inputed on Telen
  185. et without an Nui are being paid for by the particlar system requested that is w
  186. hy when an Outdials Nua is requested without any sort of Pad,Nui etc. it will no
  187. t excecpt the c
  188. all in all cases i have encountered
  189.  
  190. Here is a list of Network Messages that Telenet will respond with remember these
  191.  are for any type of Telenet access the following may appear and a completed exp
  192. lanation.

  194.         @ is the network command prompt

  196.         ? the last entry was invalid
  197.  
  198.         Access Bared - Your connection request does not allow you to
  199.      connect to this system
  200.  
  201.         Access to This Address not permitted - Your Nui is not authorized to
  202.         access the address you typed
  203.  
  204.         At
  205. tempt Aborted - You enterd the disconnect command (as we said before
  206.         when it freezes when scanning)
  207.  
  208.         Busy - All the ports,destinations are in use try again later
  209.  
  210.         Collect Wats Call Not Permitted - Collect Wats calls not permitted by
  211.         your host or authorized by your Nui
  212.  
  213.         Connected - Your terminal has been connected to the Nua system you
  214.         requested
  215.  
  216.         Connection From - Your terminal has been called by another computer or
  217.         terminal
  218.  
  219.         Connection
  220. Pending - The Network is try to establish a connection with
  221.         the Nua you requested (enter the d command or "bye" to disconnect the
  222.         attempt)
  223.  
  224.         Disconnected - Your terminal has been disconnected from the terminal
  225.         you called
  226.  
  227.         Enhanced Network Services System Error - Your call couldnt be
  228.       validated contact customer service
  229.  
  230.         Enhanced Network services unavailable at this time - Serivce is
  231.         temporarily unavailable try again later
  232.  
  233.         Illegal Address -
  234. enter the Connect sequence again whether it be an Nua
  235.         or a system name
  236.  
  237.         Invalid Charge Request -  your payment selection is not valid
  238.  
  239.         Invalid User Id or Password - The Nui you entered is not valid
  240.  
  241.         Local Congestion - Your local Access number is busy try again in a
  242.         couple minutes
  243.  
  244.         Local Disconnect - Your Terminal has been disconnected
  245.  
  246.         Local Network Outage - A temporary problem is preventing you from using
  247.         the network
  248.  
  249.         Local Procedure E
  250. rror - Communication problems by the network caused
  251.         the network to clear your call
  252.  
  253.         Not Available,Not Operating,Not Responding -  Your Computer cannot
  254.         accept your request for connection try later
  255.  
  256.         Not Connected - You have entered a command thai s only valid when
  257.         connected to a system type "cont" to be brought back into the
  258.       connection
  259.  
  260.         Not Reachable - A temporary conditon prevents you from using the
  261.         network
  262.  
  263.         Password - This is the prompt w
  264. hich apprears after youve entered an Nui
  265.  
  266.         *** Possible Data Loss - connecton has been reset
  267.  
  268.         Refused Collect Connection - Your payment selection must be prepaid
  269.  
  270.         Rejecting - Host copmputer refuses to accept the call
  271.  
  272.         Remote Procedure Error - Communication problems forced the network to
  273.         clear our call
  274.  
  275.         Still Connected - You requested another service while your online to
  276.         another
  277.  
  278.         Telenet XXX XXX - Network Port you are using
  279.  
  280.         Terminal - Th
  281. is is the terminal type prompt
  282.  
  283.         Unable to validate call - Your Nui has been temporarily disbaled
  284.  
  285.         Unable to validate call contact admin - The Nui has been permently
  286.         disabled
  287.  
  288.         Unknown Adress - Your Nua may be invalid
  289.  
  290.         Wats Call not permitted - Telenet In-wats calls are not permitted by
  291.         your host or your Nui
  292.
