  1.                 How to
  2.           Build a SILVER BOX
  3. ======================================= 
  4. ATTENTION:
  5.   BE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO SOLDER!  THIS
  6. COULD PERMENANTLY DAMAGE YOUR PHONE!!!
  7. READ EVERYTHING BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!

  9. Ingreadients:
  10.      1    Blue wire about 1 foot.
  11.      1    Gray wire about 1 foot.
  12.      1    Brown wire about 1 foot.
  13.           (Better to overkill....)
  14.      1    Single pole/Double throw
  15.           (SPDT) switch. (Smallest
  16.           you can find.)
  17.      1    Standard bell phone.
  18.  
  19. Tools:
  20.      1    Soldering Iron and Solder.
  21.      1    flat-tip screwdriver.
  22.      1    Very patcient person.

  24. 1:   Take the casing off your phone by
  25.      loosening the two screws
  26.      underneath it.  (Don't take the
  27.      screws all the way off!)
  28. 2:   Loosen (But don't remove) the
  29.      screws on the side of the touch-
  30.      tone keypad. (The ones that attach
  31.      it to the mounting bracket.) and
  32.      CAREFULLY remove the keypad from
  33.      the mounting bracket.
  34. 3:   You will notice a plastic cover on
  35.      the keypad; seperate the two
  36.      halves and get the out of your
  37.      way. (Don't destroy them, you will
  38.      need them later.)
  39. 4:   Now, look at the top of the pad
  40.      (so the 123 row is facing away,
  41.      and the *0# row is toward you.
  42.      Turn over the keypad. You should
  43.      see a mass of wires, gold plated
  44.      contacts, discrete components, and
  45.      two large doughnut shaped black
  46.      thingies. (These are the coils hat
  47.      make the touch-tone frequencies.
  48.      All you are going to do is connect
  49.      the wires that Ma Bell "Forgot"
  50.      to.)
  51. 5:   Look at the coil on the left (with
  52.      5 solder contacts facing you,
  53.      rather than being perpendicular to
  54.      you.) Count over 4 contacts FROM
  55.      the left (or 2 conacts FROM the
  56.      right) and solder the GRAY wire to
  57.      the fourth post FROM the left.
  58. 6:   Solder the other end of the GRAY
  59.      wire to the LEFT pole of the SPDT
  60.      switch.
  61. 7:   (The point of no return)..........
  62.      Take a look at the bottom edge of
  63.      the keypad. You should see a row
  64.      of three gold plated contacts (to
  65.      the right of two very large
  66.      capasitors) look at the one on the
  67.      left and GENTELY seperate the two
  68.      touching connectors (They are
  69.      soldered together with a drop of
  70.      solder) and spread them apart.
  71. 8:   Solder the brown wire to the top
  72.      contact (The one futhest from
  73.      you), and solder it to the RIGHT
  74.      pole of SPDT switch.
  75. 9:   Now, take the blue wire and solder
  76.      it to the bottom (Closest)
  77.      contact.  Solder the other end of
  78.      this wire to the CENTER pole of
  79.      SPDT switch.
  80. ***************************************

  83. 10:  Now put you phone back together.
  84.      (To make it look professonal, make
  85.      a hole in the plastic top of your
  86.      phone and stick the SPDT switch
  87.      through it.
  88.   Now, (Hopefully) when the switch is
  89. in on position you will have a normal
  90. phone and when it is in the other
  91. position the 3, 6, 9, and # keys (Which
  92. are now the A, B, C, and D keys) will
  93. magically produce the SILVER BOX TONES!

  105.              USING A
  106.            SILVER  BOX
  107. -----------------------------------
  108.   First off, a silver box adds the
  109. four extra tones to your phone that
  110. Ma Bell never told you about. They go
  111. like this:
  112.

  114.                4  5  6  B
  115.                7  8  9  C
  116.                *  0  #  D
  117.  
  118.   There used to be many places were
  119. you could use SILVER BOX tones, but
  120. now you can only use it in places were
  121. Ma Bell hasn't gotten around to
  122. replacing here old switchboxes,
  123. (4A), or on Autovan.
  124.   Autovan is a special military phone
  125. line, like a mass of private lines
  126. hooked together (I think, but I'm not
  127. sure).
  128.   To see if a specific area has the
  129. old 4A switchboxes try this test:
  130.   Call up there directory assistance by
  131. using XXX-555-1212, (Where XXX is
  132. the area code you are check out. Now
  133. hold down the "D" key as soon as you
  134. finish dialing. (If you are using the
  135. SILVER BOX that I showed you how to
  136. make; Switch to SILVER BOX tones
  137. and hold down the "#" key.) The phone
  138. should start ringing and the operator
  139. will answer.
  140.   If the operator screams at you to
  141. stop pressing your keypad, then hang
  142. up and try a diffrent areacode. (This
  143. one does not work.)
  144.   If you get a pulsing tone the you got
  145. a good line! Now try out different
  146. numbers. 6 and 7 usually form a loop
  147. line and two people with SILVER
  148. BOXES can talk. But some of these
  149. are whatched, so DON'T say anything
  150. you wouldn't want your mother to
  151. hear!
  152.   I have heard the 213 works but is
  153. being watched. Try out of the way
  154. states like Iowa, Monatana, Wyoming,
  155. ect...
