- PCMCIA/PC-Card Modem Enabler for DOS
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Note: This Modem Enabler can only be used with Rockwell based CardModems
- such as CM1710E and CM3400E. This will not work with any of the NetComm
- Socket Rocket series.
-
- Before configuring your laptop for use with this PCMCIA/PC-Card Modem Enabler,
- check to see whether drivers have been included with, or already installed on
- your laptop. It is recommended that this modem enabler only be used when Card
- and Socket Services have not been provided by or installed by your dealer.
-
- Note: The PCMCIA modem program included on this disk is known as a Point
- Enabler. Unlike Card and Socket Services it does not support Hot Swapping
- (the ability to add and remove PCMCIA cards). If the card is ever removed
- after configuration, the laptop must be restarted to reload the modem enabler.
-
- This PC-Card Point Enabler is to be used only on computers using the MS-DOS
- operating system.

- Before running the PCMCIA Modem Installation Program
-
- 1. Check how many slots exist in the laptop. If there is one slot then it
- will be Slot 0 (Slot A). If there are two slots then the lower will be Slot 0
- (Slot A) and the upper will be Slot 1 or (Slot B). Also confirm that the
- PCMCIA slot is type 2 compliant.
- 2. Check how many COM ports are set up in the laptop. Checking on the back
- of the laptop is not a true indication of which COM ports are configured.
- View the BIOS setup and check which COM ports are active. Otherwise run MSD
- and check to see which COM ports MS-DOS recognises. It is recommended that
- the CardModem be configured for the next free COM port. eg. If there are two
- COM ports then set the modem for COM3.

- Installing a CardModem for MS-DOS
-
- ╖ Insert the card into the slot and ensure that the card is socketed firmly.
- Some laptops will beep when a card is inserted or removed.
- ╖ Exit Windows totally and insert the 'Modem Scripts and Information Pack'
- into your drive.
- ╖ Change to the drive by typing A: (or appropriate drive letter).
- ╖ Type CD PCMCIA
- ╖ Type INSTALL and then the PCMCIA Installation program will run.
- ╖ The Install program will ask: Which drive is your boot disk (usually C:)
- The COM port you would like to use (eg Com2)
- The Slot that the modem card is in (eg Slot A)
- The memory region to use (eg. A000)
- The Strap Setting (should be left at 00).
- ╖ Now that the driver has been installed, remove the disk from your floppy
- drive, reboot your laptop and load Windows.
- ╖ In the Program Manager select the File Menu and choose Run.
- ╖ Type terminal and press Enter, this will load Windows Terminal.
- ╖ Select the Settings Menu and choose Communications.
- ╖ Select the COM port that the modem is set for from the Connector option.
- ╖ Leave the other options as default and press Ok.
- ╖ Type AT in lower or caps and press Enter. The modem should respond with OK.
- - If the modem is not responding or terminal reports an error message, then
- see below.
-
-
- Trouble Shooting
- The CardModem is not responding under MS-DOS.
-
- ╖ Ensure that the card is inserted completely into the socket.
- ╖ Check the BIOS setup of the laptop. See if there are any options to enable
- the slot such as powering the slot on or unlocking the security of the slot.
- Some machines have a security option to lock the PCMCIA slot from use.
- ╖ Check the INITCARD parameters in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. To set the COM port the
- parameter -p is used. (If it is set to -p2 then the modem is set for COM2).
- ╖ Check also the -k setting. If the card is in Slot 0 (Slot A) then the -k
- parameter should be set for -kA and for Slot 1 (Slot B) it should be set for
- -kB.
- ╖ Try changing the memory region for INITCARD from -c0xA000 to -c0xD000. Then
- edit the CONFIG.SYS so that EMM386 is set to exclude X=D000-D016.
- ╖ Some Toshiba models have a Tsetup program which is run in DOS by typing
- TSETUP at the DOS prompt. There may also be an icon for it in Windows that
- loads a Windows version of the same program. There is a section for PCMCIA
- which should be set for PCMCIA = Other - COM 2 (2F8 Irq 3).
- ╖ If there is another slot then try installing the card in that slot.
- ╖ Try setting up the Pcmcia modem on another laptop.
- ╖ If you are also running a Network card in the other Pcmcia slot then try
- loading the modem drivers only. This will check if the Network card drivers
- are interfering with the modem configuration. If the modem responds without
- the Network drivers loaded, you will have to set your bootup for a MultiConfig
- which loads the Modem drivers or the Network drivers only. Alternatively you
- can contact your laptop manufacturer for the latest Card and Socket Services
- drivers.
