- Delrina WinComm PRO 1.1 README Notes October 24, 1994
- ==================================================================
- The following information reflects changes made since the Delrina
- WinComm PRO Setup Guide, the Delrina WinComm PRO User's Guide and
- the Delrina WinComm PRO Internet Messenger User's Guide went to
- press. You should review these notes prior to running WinComm.
-
- Where applicable, these notes refer to specific sections in the
- appropriate manual.
-
-
- Using WinComm
- =============
-
- Scrollbars
- ----------
- (WinComm PRO User's Guide, page 5-23)
-
- You cannot hide your session scrollbars.
-
- Backscroll Buffer
- -----------------
- (WinComm PRO User's Guide, page 5-5)
-
- The default backscroll buffer size is 500 lines.
-
- User Interface Enhancements
- ---------------------------
- (WinComm PRO User's Guide, page 7-26)
-
- If you are upgrading from a previous version, you will notice an
- improved, easy to use interface. If you have written scripts that
- use menu options, you will have to either modify these scripts
- with the new names or assign menu options through the Modify
- Program dialog. In this dialog, you can assign any menu option to
- a key or key combination, to an icon, or to both. Refer to your
- User's Guide for complete details.
-
- If you have created your own C scripts, you may have to change the
- string mentioned. You can refer to your menus for the new command
- names, or you can refer to the DCAPI write document or online help.
-
- GIF Viewer Enhancements
- -----------------------
- The Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) Viewer now has an Edit menu.
- This menu contains a COPY command that copies the selected or
- downloaded image to the Clipboard so you can use the image with
- other programs.
-
- GIF Viewer and 8514 Drivers
- ---------------------------
- If you are using an 8514 driver, you may not be able to successfully
- download GIF images. Change to another driver to avoid problems.
-
- Internet Scripts Phonebook Entry
- --------------------------------
- Note that this entry, which you can use to automatically download
- updated scripts from the Delrina BBS, will dial long distance to
- Toronto, Ontario, Canada (area code 416).
-
-
- If your service provider is not on our list and you want to add
- them, send the information to Delrina at im-scripts@delrina.com or
- call your service provider and ask the system administrator to
- contact Delrina. This e-mail address should be used to send script
- information only, and should not be used for technical support or
- customer service. Delrina will try to respond within 2-3 weeks.
-
- If you need immediate access to your provider and want to record
- a login script, you can use the procedure detailed on page B-3
- of the Internet Messenger User's Guide. Before you record your
- new script, rename your login.scr to login.old. This prevents you
- from overwriting your login script. Then, if you need to revert to
- this old script, you just have to rename it to login.scr.
-
- Using the CLEAR Button in the File Usage Dialog
- -----------------------------------------------
- (WinComm PRO User's Guide, page 5-9)
-
- The CLEAR button in the File Usage dialog (opened from the Setup
- menu) applies to the External Files section of this dialog only.
- If this section is empty or if the cursor is not in one of the
- fields in this section, the CLEAR button is grayed out.
-
- If you are using the File Usage dialog from an open or connected
- session:
-
- - You cannot clear the session capture file while it is open
- (the CLEAR button is grayed out).
-
- - Clearing the session backscroll file may not have any effect
- because the backscroll file information remains in the system's
- memory.
-
- Updating Your Phonebook List
- ----------------------------
- When you import phonebook entries from other programs into
- WinComm, your phonebook is not automatically updated. From the
- phonebook Setup menu, choose Phonebook Directories. Click OK in
- this dialog to have your changes take effect.
-
- Internet Messenger Command
- --------------------------
- If you select the Internet Messenger command from the session
- On-Line menu, WinComm will ask you if you want to disconnect
- before opening Internet Messenger. Click Yes if you want to
- perform online activities in Internet Messenger. Click No if
- you want to perform basic activities such as changing setup.
-
-
- Using Internet Messenger
- ========================
-
- Adding Attachments
- ------------------
- (Internet Messenger User's Guide, page 3-15)
-
- There are several different methods of sending attachments with
- notes. If you know that the mail software used by the note
- recipient does not support attachments, the text or binary file
- must be inserted into the note, rather than added as an
- attachment. When you insert a binary file, the file is
- UUEncoded-or converted to simple ASCII text for transmission.
- When the file is received, it is UUDecoded, or converted back to
- a binary format. To use attachments rather than inserting files
- into the note, the mail software used by the note recipient must
- support the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) mail
- protocol. MIME allows you to e-mail non-ASCII documents using a
- proprietary encoding scheme.
-
- To add an attachment to a note:
-
- 1. Click Attach in the compose or edit window. The Attachment
- dialog appears.
-
- 2. Complete the dialog as follows.
-
- Filename - Type the path and file name or click Browse to use
- the file selector dialog.
-
- Description - Type a description of the file being attached.
-
- MIME Type - Select Binary or Text to indicate the type of file
- being attached. Both types of files will be automatically
- MIME-encoded.
-
- 3. Click OK. An icon with a file name appears below the note body
- to indicate that a file is attached to the note. The appearance
- of the icon depends on the type of file.
-
- Note: If you are attaching binary files to be sent to recipients
- who do not have MIME-compatible remote mailers, you must use the
- Insert Binary File (UUEncode) command to UUEncode the message.
-
- Viewing Attachments
- -------------------
- To view attachments, Internet Messenger must determine which viewer
- is appropriate for the given MIME attachment. If the attachment has
- a name, the extension of the name is used to search for a Windows
- file association. If the file has no name, Internet Messenger
- consults the "Viewers" section in the IM.INI file. Each MIME type
- can have an entry in this section with the appropriate viewer. For
- example, to view Postscript attachments with the viewer PSVIEW.EXE,
- you would add the following.
-
- application/postscript=PSVIEW.EXE
-
- You may add additional MIME types if required.
-
- Maximum Number of Open Folders
- ------------------------------
- (Internet Messenger User's Guide, Chapter 4, Managing Folders)
-
- You can only have five folders open at any one time. If you
- already have five folders open and Internet Messenger needs to
- open another one to update your mail, you must close one of your
- other folders. If you do not close one or more folders, all
- remaining mail will be placed in a temporary folder and you will
- have to manually update it.
-
- Synchronizing Folders With the Host
- -----------------------------------
- (Internet Messenger User's Guide, pages 5-12 and 5-15)
-
- A folder on the host is actually a mail file within a directory.
- If you want to synchronize folders, you must specify the directory
- on the host where the folders are to be placed. If no directory
- exists, you must create one manually.
-
- - Log in to the host and go to the Terminal screen.
-
- - At the shell prompt, enter the UNIX command ...
-
- mkdir <directory name>
-
- ... and press Enter.
-
- The Host Folders Directory field under Setup | Host Session
- defaults to your home directory. You must type the name of the
- newly created directory where the folders are to be placed.
- The 'Update Record Folder on Host' option in the Host Session
- Defaults dialog simply updates your sent mail folder if you want
- to keep track of email sent through Internet Messenger from other
- client email software such as ELM or PINE.
-
- To synchronize folders, the 'Update Inbox', 'Send New Mail' and
- 'Update Folders on Host' options should all be enabled in the Host
- Session Defaults dialog. Also, the list of folders that you want
- to synchronize on the host must appear under the 'Synchronized
- Folders' list.
-
- Terminating Scripts
- -------------------
- Follow this procedure to terminate scripts from the Terminal
- screen.
-
- 1. From the File menu, select Terminate Script.
-
- 2. From the On-Line menu, select HangUp.
-
- Make sure you terminate one script before running another one.
-
-
- WinComm Command
- ---------------
- If you select the WinComm command from the session On-Line menu,
- Internet Messenger will ask you if you want to disconnect
- before opening WinComm. Click Yes if want to perform online
- activites in WinComm. Click No if you want to perform basic
- activities such as changing setup.
-
- Closing the Terminal Screen
- ---------------------------
- When you are in the terminal screen and try to close using the
- control menu box in the top left hand corner, Internet Messenger
- will ask you if you want to disconnect. If you select No, the
- terminal screen will close but you WILL remain online.
-
- Composing Notes
- ---------------
- When you create an alias in your address book, it is case
- sensitive. This means that when you compose a note and type
- an alias in the TO: field, you must type it exactly as you
- defined it in your address book. If you type the alias
- incorrectly, your note will be sent back to you because the
- recipient could not be located.
-
