- A note from the author:
-
- I hope most of you users' out there are the adventurous types
- who don't need a lot of documentation to get you started. I put my
- efforts primarily into making the program extremely easy to use;
- effectively eliminating the need for the majority of this text. So if
- you are fairly familiar with computers, I would recommend that get straight
- into running "CS-SETUP" to get things started. If you are a beginner,
- or just would like more information about the program, then...read on!

- What is CompuSet?
- -----------------
-
- CompuSet is a program which is designed to provide a practical
- way of keeping your computers' internal clock reasonably accurate. While
- many people might say that there is other software available that will
- make long distance calls to Atomic Clocks located throughout the United
- States, there has never been (to my knowledge) a program that can make
- a local call, practically anywhere in the world, to retrieve the time.
-
- CompuServe is a huge service, offering many of us a great place
- to obtain virtually any type of information. For those of us users who
- dial into CompuServe from a local phone number, there is no charge for the
- call, except when we go into extended services (or other areas, as noted
- on CompuServe). I noticed that the current time is listed on the screen
- when I logged in, and eventually decided that it would be very handy
- to have a program retrieve the time automatically for me.
-
- I then decided that many other people are interested in this program
- as well; hence, my first attempt at a Shareware release. From the response
- I have received so far, my efforts appear to be appreciated by users' from
- all over the country!
-
- Why use this over another time-setting program? Well, first of all,
- it is cheaper than most commercial packages. I have seen ad's for packages
- in BYTE (as I recall) selling for $75+. For this non registered try-before-
- you-buy package, you likely didn't pay a dime! Once you decide that you
- like CompuSet, the full price for an upgraded version with many new features
- is a mere $24.99. That is $50 in short-term savings. Now, I should point
- out that the commercial package I mentioned will cost you a long-distance
- call for every time you use it. With CompuSet, you will pay no long-distance
- charges, as long as you have a local CompuServe phone number in your area.
- Over the long-term, your savings can really add up!
-
- Setup.
- ------
-
- To get started, you should go to your DOS prompt, and type:
-
- CS-SETUP
-
- and then press ENTER. Follow the on-screen instructions, and
- your program should be quickly and easily set-up in no time flat.
-
- If you have problems with setting the program up, refer to your modem's
- manual. If you still have problems, ask a knowledgeable friend, or users'
- group in your area. If you STILL have problems, contact me on CompuServe
- at 73672,522.
-
- AUTOEXEC.BAT
- ------------
-
- If you want this program to start up automatically, you first have
- to find out which drive your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is located on. Normally,
- this will be drive C:. Make that drive the active drive, and then:
-
- CD \
- ECHO CS.EXE>>AUTOEXEC.BAT
-
- Note: Press enter after each of the above lines. Also, type the second
- line exactly as shown -- WITHOUT any additional spaces..
-
- After this is complete, copy the files CS.EXE and CS.CFG to the
- same drive and directory (eg: C:\) where the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is located.
- Then, reboot your computer, and CompuSet should run automatically for you.
-
- Accuracy.
- ---------
-
- This clock is NOT NEARLY AS ACCURATE as some other clock setting
- packages, such as those calling Atomic Clocks to syncronize the time.
- This is due to the fact that the CompuServe time sends only the Hours,
- and Minutes. Seconds are not included. However, this program will
- assume 30 seconds all the time in an effort to maximize accuracy.
-
- Therefore, your clock should always be accurate within about
- 30 seconds. For most of us, that should suffice. If not, then you
- may have to use the Atomic Clocks (and pay the associated long-distance
- charges).
-
- Evaluation Card.
- ----------------
-
- Once you get everything running smoothly, and you manage to dial
- into CompuServe and get the time syncronized on your system, run the "CS"
- program again. This 2nd time, you will be prompted for some information
- about yourself, and some comments about the program. Follow the instructions
- on-screen, and you will be entered into a monthly draw for a FREE registered
- version mailed right to your door automatically.
-
- If you have already registered, fill out this evaluation anyways,
- because if your name is drawn, and you are verified as a registered owner
- of CompuSet, you will win DOUBLE your cash back!
-
- Online-Registration Information.
- --------------------------------
-
- Upon program start-up, you can press "F1", and then press "1" to
- view the online registration information. During program operation, you
- can press "F4".
-
- What this key does is tell the the computer to go to the Shareware
- Registration (SWREG) forum ("GO SWREG"), and then you will see the dis-
- claimer displayed by CompuServe. After you press a key at this screen,
- you will be placed into a TERMINAL EMULATION MODE. This will show you
- everything that CompuServe would show you in your favorite telecommunications
- package. At the first screen, you should see information about the
- benefits of registering CompuSet. This includes the registration price,
- as well as other related information. Follow the on-screen prompts that
- are provided by CompuServe. If you decide to register it, you will need
- to enter your address information, and confirm that you allow the $24.99
- to be included on your CompuServe bill.
-
- When you are finished with the terminal mode (auto-registration),
- press ESCape to exit. Also note that there is a time limit of 5 minutes
- imposed in terminal mode. This is so that if someone else enters this
- terminal mode, they really shouldn't be able to do TOO much harm to your
- account within this 5 minute period. As always, you should keep this program
- away from troublesome users, just as you should keep away your copy of
- WinCim (or DosCim), because it contains your password information, and the
- user can log-on without your permission.
-
- Other Registration Methods.
- ---------------------------
-
- If you wish to register by Mail or would like to try the online
- registration yourself, press "F1" as soon as you run "CS.EXE". This will
- display a screen that talks about the benefits of registration. After
- this screen, you can print registration out to your printer by pressing
- "2" or "3". Make sure your printer has paper and is turned on.
-
- This program is Shareware.
- --------------------------
-
- Shareware is *not* free. It is TRY-BEFORE-YOU-BUY. Therefore, after
- a reasonable period of time, you must make the decision to cease using
- this program, or to pay the registration fee of $24.99 (USD or CAD).
-
- Please note that a reasonable period of time to try out this program
- is about 20 times, or one-month; whichever comes first. The program will
- prompt you to register after you have used it beyond this period.
-
- Note: This is not NAGware. This is simply fair business. If you
- never got paid for doing your job well, you would certainly complain as
- well. Its the same thing for shareware authors such as myself.
-
- Why should you register?
- ------------------------
-
- Scheduling features!
-
- You can put CompuSet in a batch file such
- as your AUTOEXEC.BAT. With the registered
- version, you can select which days you want the
- program to execute on. For example, you can
- choose to run the program only on Fridays.
- That way, most of the time when you boot-up
- your computer, the program will be bypassed.
- VERY HANDY for those of us who don't want
- to wait forever for the computer to boot up.
-
- Mail Waiting Notification!
-
- When the time is set, you will also be
- notified if you have any mail waiting.
-
- Built-In Technical Support Key!
-
- This amazing concept will allow CompuSet
- to send messages directly to the author of the
- program on CompuServe -- all automatically,
- simply press a key!
-
- Future Discounts!
-
- Great deals on any future versions, as well
- as advance notification as they are being made!
-
- Custom Enhancements!!
-
- If you need some particular function added
- into the program, the author will seriously
- consider programming it for you! An example
- would be password protection before entering
- the program.
-
- Charitable Donation!
-
- You can feel good about yourself because
- 15% of your registration fee will go directly to
- the Canadian Cancer Society. If you prefer to
- support a charity of your own, supply me with a
- copy of a receipt equal to about 15% of the
- registration fee (lets say $4 or $5 at least),
- and you may send me a money order for $19.99 instead
- of the full $24.99.
-
- Piece of Mind!
-
- With your registration, you will feel good
- about yourself. Many people don't feel
- obligated to register shareware. To those
- people, remember:
-
- WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND!
